Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of ’99
If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be
it. The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by
scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable
than my own meandering
experience…I will dispense this advice now. Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth; oh nevermind; you will not
understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded.
But trust me, in 20 years you’ll look back at photos of yourself and
recall in a way you can’t grasp now how much possibility lay before
you and how fabulous you really looked….You’re not as fat as you
imagine. Don’t worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as
effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing
bubblegum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that
never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm
on some idle Tuesday. Do one thing everyday that scares you Sing Don’t be reckless with other people’s hearts, don’t put up with
people who are reckless with yours. Floss Don’t waste your time on jealousy; sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes
you’re behind…the race is long, and in the end, it’s only with
yourself. Remember the compliments you receive, forget the insults; if you
succeed in doing this, tell me how. Keep your old love letters, throw away your old bank statements. Stretch Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do with your
life…the most interesting people I know didn’t know at 22 what they
wanted to do with their lives, some of the most interesting 40 year
olds I know still don’t. Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees, you’ll miss them when they’re gone. Maybe you’ll marry, maybe you won’t, maybe you’ll have children, maybe
you won’t, maybe you’ll divorce at 40, maybe you’ll dance the funky
chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary…what ever you do, don’t
congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself either – your
choices are half chance, so are everybody else’s. Enjoy your body,
use it every way you can…don’t be afraid of it, or what other people
think of it, it’s the greatest instrument you’ll ever
own.. Dance…even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room. Read the directions, even if you don’t follow them. Do NOT read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly. Get to know your parents, you never know when they’ll be gone for
good. Be nice to your siblings; they are the best link to your past and the
people most likely to stick with you in the future. Understand that friends come and go,but for the precious few you
should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and
lifestyle because the older you get, the more you need the people you
knew when you were young. Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard; live
in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft. Travel. Accept certain inalienable truths, prices will rise, politicians will
philander, you too will get old, and when you do you’ll fantasize
that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were
noble and children respected their elders. Respect your elders. Don’t expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund,
maybe you have a wealthy spouse; but you never know when either one
might run out. Don’t mess too much with your hair, or by the time you're 40, it will
look 85. Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who
supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of
fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the
ugly parts and recycling it for more than
it’s worth. But trust me on the sunscreen…

Yes, that is where one has the best opportunity to partake of the grits. Note that I am generally opposed to brunch in principle but have in fact enjoyed it at the White Dog.

Sweet Jane, at 1742 E. Passyunk is co-owned by an extremely cool (in all of the best senses of that word) guy...definitely go there. Beautiful World Syndicate is nearby-- 1619 E. Passyunk.

Tequila Sunrise at 525 W. Girard is also definitely worth a visit. If you're taking public random-claw-hammer attacks transportation, then get off at the Girard stop and walk west a few blocks. After you soak up the vinyl, go get drinks at The Fire at 412 W. Girard. I haven't been there in forever, but I used to make a habit of eschewing Johnny Brenda's in favor of that place. Everyone that works there is ridiculously friendly...

dell, Thursday, 11 September 2008 16:56 (fifteen years ago) link

clawhammer attacks? is that the new trend? shd I just take cabs everywhere?

I was thinking of going to a Fire show.

nah, but septa is chill, by and large.

are you going to be in philly this wknd? i will be out of town, otherwise i would be like "HEY MAAAAAAAAAN, let's hang out and talk about jerry lewis and drink belgian beers"

dell, Thursday, 11 September 2008 17:09 (fifteen years ago) link

I will be at a Phils' game Sat, and hopefully not in my hotel for 2 nights cuz I can't eat.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 11 September 2008 17:15 (fifteen years ago) link

Awesome! I haven't been to a game yet this season.

What do you mean you "can't eat"??

dell, Thursday, 11 September 2008 17:23 (fifteen years ago) link

I had food poisoning Monday, and am still trying to shake it in time for the weekend.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 11 September 2008 17:27 (fifteen years ago) link

Aw man, I'm sorry...

What show at the Fire were you thinking of going to? Dr. Dog? They are huge here, and the venue is small, so plan accordingly, if that's on your agenda.

dell, Thursday, 11 September 2008 17:30 (fifteen years ago) link

morbs, you seem to get food poisoning a lot. maybe it's something else to look at?

gabbneb, Thursday, 11 September 2008 17:32 (fifteen years ago) link

no, the Friday one:

Mose Giganticus
The Emotron
Ugh, God
Hey Hey

bands I know nuthin about.

Probably won't tho, I hate live music these days. Might go to a Fringe show (Woyzeck) in Northern Libs.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 11 September 2008 17:34 (fifteen years ago) link

i don't know any of those bands. philly offers an embarrassing riches of music, but i rarely go to shows that don't involve friends playing because:

a. i am poor
b. i am old and burnt out on going to shows (and when i do make the effort i am disappointed pretty frequently...i would rather spend money dancing and drinking at this late date in my life)

one cool thing about the fire, though, is that they have monitors in the bar portion of the space which broadcast the performances, so one can observe from a distance and then decide whether or not to pony up the bucks to see what's going on in the next room.

dell, Thursday, 11 September 2008 17:41 (fifteen years ago) link

Might go to a Fringe show (Woyzeck) in Northern Libs.

I've never been to the German Society, but the Latvian Society (which is a block away) is the place to go...unfortunately I think they are only open to the public at large once a month or so, and I don't think there is anything going on there this weekend. Laris, who used to be a partner in Arthur magazine, revitalized the place, and it is pretty amazing. It's situated adjacent to a house where Edgar Allen Poe lived at one point, and which is one of the things that Philly clutches to for cred, at least in the realm of tourist guides and whatnot...which is bizarre, b/c there are so many other things that the city could be bragging about. Poe belongs to Baltimore, not Philly!

Anyhow, if you go to N. 2nd St. in Northern Liberties, you will encounter all manner of great restaurants and bars. The beer culture here is insane; it's nigh impossible to stumble into a bar that doesn't have at least a handful of exotic Belgian offerings.

The Spring Garden-ish portion of that part of town can be sketchy-- a friend of mine was held up at gunpoint a couple of years ago while strolling through those lands...but, if you have others walking with you, and it's the weekend, then you will be fine. The worst danger you will encounter is obnoxious drunken yahoo weekend revelers.

dell, Thursday, 11 September 2008 18:04 (fifteen years ago) link

I am alone, but have mastered the Steve Martin tactic of vomiting on attackers.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 11 September 2008 18:06 (fifteen years ago) link

ha, someone told me once to "act crazy" in those kinds of situations, but i usually make the mistake of leaving the house sans the novelty arrow that appears to pierce my head.

this is such a weird weekend; even if i were not going through with plans made months ago, then i would be out of town attending a "reunion" show of a dear friend from high school's band.

which is to say, i wish that i would be around to force my company (as well as that of my friends) upon you. but, meh, you'll be fine.

philly actually is really "ugly"; that was driven into me after spending a wknd in dc recently. but if you like belgian beers, then this here is valhalla (or the flemish equivalent thereof)

dell, Thursday, 11 September 2008 18:18 (fifteen years ago) link

I really don't fancy any kinds of beer to extremes.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 11 September 2008 18:22 (fifteen years ago) link

ok, well, i'm the last person to ever champion philadelphia, but, anywhere you go there are beer offerings to satisfy anyone...cask-conditioned, belgianiana, etc.

and it's a pretty respectable restaurant town as well.

if the "aw geez, we're not nyc" cloud which hangs over the town is ever overcome, and people at large ever manage to appreciate here for what it is, then this town would explode into space.

mind you, i'm saying that as someone who wants nothing more then to get the heck out of here and go back west.

dell, Thursday, 11 September 2008 18:33 (fifteen years ago) link

If the food goes down, I may get a cheesesteak on South St this time.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 11 September 2008 18:35 (fifteen years ago) link

i'm not a meat guy, so i don't have any advice to give you, other than go to Pat's, not Geno's (Geno's are the racist motherfuckers who occupy that neon eyesore)

also, going on the word of friends who are cheesesteak fiends, those places are lame tourist traps, and the best cheesesteak is apparently in old city. i can't remember the name of the place, but i think it's close to 2nd and market?

the table is the table, Thursday, 11 September 2008 19:06 (fifteen years ago) link

Doctah, awesome, have fun at the game! Me love the Phils, but I understand if you can't get down with that particular program.

table, yeah, I grew up not far from the city, and this was the last place I ever would have wanted to live, but circumstances have brought me here... that being said, it's been good in many ways for me-- however, to extemporize upon that in some manner that would cover all of the bases would lead to a tl; dr post, but, in short, yeah. I hear you.

The Laris who I mentioned upthread is a huge Philly booster, but I only manage to grok that sensibility every now and then. Bottom line is, I think it's a great place to do visual arts, music, etc. I am not currently actively pursuing any of those things; my inclinations these days lean more towards hippie-ish things that would better be served by me living on the west coast or in some hippie college town. So, fuck me, etc.
