Ellipses. Classic... or Dud?...

I just happened to notice several (well, more than one) thread in New Answers with "A Thread Title Like This..." So, I thought I'd ask a question.

Are ellipses a Good Thing that lends your words an air of gravitas and mystery? Or are they horribly over-used bundles of dots that should have been shot at birth? YOU decide!

(alternatively, just post examples of horrible ellipsis misuse)

Both... and who cares for reactionary logic?

Why can't we alternatively post examples of ellipses used to great effect?

(In addition, over here, my good friend(s), the parentheses; Want to talk about over-used on message boards, among other places, and also what about that infernal comma? In fact, all punctuation!)

Well, you can if you want to, I guess.

The infernal comma: the punctuation of Satan!

Satan likes the comma because he speaks like Captain Kirk and likes to be able to put the pauses into his writing without resorting to spelling them out like Pinter.

If Dante were to do a rewrite of the Inferno, he'd get a big shock - Satan is such a big Trekkie, his entire public persona is now Shatnerian. He even goes around in a tight-fitting red and black lycra outfit.

...i just realized there are 2 caitlins!

(Which makes this thread awesome, since there are at least two Johns (plus a Jon) and two Martins.)

I think Satan was wearing tight red and black outfits even before he was a Trekkie. In fact, I heard that was one of the things that first got him interested in the show.

SATAN: Wow! Cool threads! I gotta TiVo this show!

martin m. (mushrush), Saturday, 15 January 2005 21:05 (nineteen years ago) link

He was, of course, very advanced - Hell had TiVos a good 310 years before men and women did.

(sadly, they got them 174 years before they first got TV, so they weren't much use for a while)
