So I watched the pilot for this show tonight on (ugh!) UPN.

I was pretty impressed. I was expecting something totally different and much less dark.

Anyone else watch it?

I fear it'll be cancelled within a month or so, as that seems to be the fate of most good television these days.

i had intented to watch this, as a guilty pleasure- somethign about the previews had a comic bookish feel to it

i saw abt 1 minute of this. she walked into a firehouse, she said hi to a fireman that she knew, and he replied "hey, barely legal, what's up etc..." i turned it.

g--ff (gcannon), Thursday, 23 September 2004 12:38 (nineteen years ago) link

It's very noirish. And I love that they have this incredibly damaged girl as a main character. Her backstory is not cutesy. It's just incredibly sad and unvarnished and rings true.

Seriously, this show is AWESOME. It's 10x the show that Lost is, and I want people to start watching it immediately because if it gets cancelled I'm seriously going to sink into depression. It's wonderfully acted, plotted, and written. Start watching. Now. I command you. You will not regret it. It's so funny and dark and adult and has not yet pulled a single one of its punches, and the seasonal arc has been so seamlessly intertwined into all of the episodes.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 28 October 2004 21:51 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm serious. Start watching. Especially if you have a Nielsen box. Or if you like good television. Or if you like me and trust my taste.

when is it on?

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 28 October 2004 22:05 (nineteen years ago) link

Tuesdays at 9/8c on UPN. So right after The Gilmore Girls, but on a different station.

It's gonna be a midseason replacement on CTV, so I'll try to catch it if reminded of it. TV has not been my friend since the demise of the Buffyverse (that is, until 24 starts up again in January).

Jeffrey (Danny), Thursday, 23 December 2004 00:21 (nineteen years ago) link

No great shakes. Does it get better than the pilot?

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Thursday, 23 December 2004 07:31 (nineteen years ago) link

It does get better than the pilot but some episodes are still patchy. overall story arc seems like it will be good and the flashbacks are interwoven well. The detective noir angle is done well and when the colours aren't overdone it's like cake fr yr eyes.

http://villagevoice.com/issues/0449/tv.php

"pulses with promise" is about right. Good character too, at least fr me.

Plus i was reading this thread, Why do I not get, care for, and in fact utterly disdain Buffy et al? while i was watching some episodes which implanted buffy in my brain. Now i think veronica mars is the first Post-Buffy show i have seen. there are probably already ones anyway, i miss a lot of tv. post-buffy is a pretty crap term.

err, Mel W to thread?

i couldn't tell if I liked it or hated it. that girl is all hard edges and kind of difficult to take; like sarah michelle gellar w/out anything likable. the tone was kind of uneven and fakey at times and that bothered me. I'll probably watch it again though

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 15 January 2005 22:54 (nineteen years ago) link

Some have been more uneven than others.

Hmm, CTV still has it listed as Winter 2005 but no specifics on when/whether it's gonna be playing soon. All these references to Buffy are surely going to lead me to some sort of letdown.

It started in 1990 - twin peaks was perhaps an obvious touchstone (though I guess I’ll have to watch it to find out if it was the writers or the critics doing the touching)

halfway through this new season and I'm loving it - it's aged exactly as it should, perfectly in sync with its audience.
One small thing though, has Weevil always looked like a pre-teen dressed up as 90's gangsta for Halloween? Or did they make it worse by trying to age the character?

well this was a ball!
I really enjoyed watching it but also had this weird feeling of unease a lot of the time. Maybe it was Logan's 'keeping in the anger' or maybe it was all the adult dialogue which sat oddly at first (I can't remember if the movie was like that), or maybe I couldn't quite get a feel for some of the characters? idk.

found myself unexpectedly rooting for Piz in the VM movie though! He was nice and clean and cute there compared to the still volatile Logan.

Liz works for Ira Glass in the movie, right? He’s not even living in the same universe as Veronica

mh, Sunday, 13 September 2020 19:46 (three years ago) link

I haven’t seen 4 yet. But I loved s2, flawed as it may be. S3 tho... the feminists vs comedians stuff ... the dean who Veronica has to charm... that I’m supposed to care if piz gets a radio show... the weird Stanford prison thing ... the only good plot so far (I’m just a few eps in) is Keith at the cabin (RIP Kendall)

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Sunday, 13 September 2020 21:24 (three years ago) link

Also piz in the movie might as well be a plot device designed to irritate Veronica who clearly is better off w Logan chemistry

So we have been rewatching Veronica Mars sporadically as it's been on a channel here. Finally got around to re-watching the movie a couple of weeks ago.
Got a Lionsgate trial subscription to watch Party Down, and a ton of Mars Universe actors pop up in that, including Keith Mars.

The past few days, we decided to watch Contagion - thought it might be 'fun' after the pandemic. Anyway, Keith Mars again pops up in it, kinda weird.

Before ditching Lionsgate, thought we might as well watch Station Eleven (not yet convinced that was a good idea, not least right after Contagion). Anyway! Guess who rides up on a bike in that? Keith Mars again.
I'm not complaining, I like seeing him. It's just a bit like he's following us about.

I revisited high school romance comedy Drive Me Crazy, which I hadn't realized (but have now learned) was scripted by Rob Thomas. When it came out in November 1999, it was third in a series of similarly themed flicks that year – after She's All That and 10 Things I Hate About You – and while it's less flashy than those two, it has a certain low-key appeal and degree of "realism" that generate particular interest. The dialogue is a step above, and there are certain character beats that reflect Thomas's skill & sensibilities. Cool soundtrack, too...
