I ask this somewhat guiltily after having already decided on a sleek little laptop, in the face of friends' pragmatic advice to the contrary.

Still, I'd say laptop, if you put a gun to my head: less of a pain to drag round, than trying to strap down a desktop into the back of the convertible.

I think, screw that guy. Apple Powerbooks look awesome. And they just feel so... so very right. Even my mom (who I felt for sure would be apalled by my new expenditure) said, "You really should go with an Apple laptop. They're known for their music stuff."

Oh, you know, "oh, laptops aren't upgradeable" and "oh, I won't be able to fix it if something goes wrong" and "oh, you'll break it" and "oh, I don't like laptops you trendy fool", that sort of thing.

He is, sadly, so OTM. The joy of the desktop machine is that it's very very easy to replace any component and even to do some of the troubleshooting yourself. Getting into your notebook's guts is not only much tougher, you run the risk of completely wrecking it if you try to look inside it yourself. I mean, ideally your notebook won't break at all and you have the warranty and all, but you know...computers suck, and they break. Especially if you're carting it around with you everywhere you go.

(actually, I probably won't be taking it much farther than the living room in general)

Also, I'm still old-fashioned in that I still like to be apart from my "computer" and not be tempted to bring it with me to every place/event etc. If I need portable data, then I'll burn it onto a disc and use another machine somewhere. Also, my palm pilot experience was a disaster. I ended up just putting drink recipes, jokes and the kama sutra on it!

I've always been a hardcore desktop guy myself. Unfortunately, though, I want to travel absolutely as light as possible when I move overseas, and a desktop is not what I need to lug around town - I'll probably have too much stuff anyway. I've flirted with the idea of sending over my PC desktop later, but I still think it'd be too much hassle in the long run. So imma gettin a PowerBook. Whoopee! It's never going to leave my desk, but whatever. I only use a few basic programs and a few high-end video and audio programs.

Also, not quite related but definitely cool as hell (and I shall get this as soon as I can afford it) - Max/MSP with Jitter. Jitter rocks my video world.

If it's stereo wave editing/mastering you want to do then Bias Peak. I'm not sure if Bias Peak does multi-track like Cool Edit Pro (BTW Syntrillium has been taken over by Adobe and CEP will henceforth be known as Adobe Audition).
