I could throw "Unlimited Edition" out the window, though.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 5 November 2004 11:15 (nineteen years ago) link

It has a lot of good things on it tho! And some crap too, it must be admitted. You don't like "Mother Upduff"??!?!??

Soon Over Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 5 November 2004 11:19 (nineteen years ago) link

That's on "Cannibalism/Anthology"

windowwww windowwwww

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 5 November 2004 11:32 (nineteen years ago) link

It's on "Unlimited Edition" too tho, innit?

Soon Over Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 5 November 2004 11:34 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah, but as it's on anth, why not throw unlim out da win?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 5 November 2004 11:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Right let me see:

Good: Gommorha; Blue Bag (Inside Paper); The Empress and the Ukraine King; Mother Upduff; Cutaway (bits of it); Connection; Fall of Another Year; Ethnological Forgery Series No. 8; Ibis

OK: Doko E; I'm Too Leise; TV Spot; Ethnological Forgery Series No. 7

Shite: LH 702 (Nairobi/Munchen); Musette; Ethnological Forgery Series No. 27; Ethnological Forgery Series No. 10; Ethnological Forgery Series No. 36; Cutaway (most of it); Transcendental Express

I suppose you could bin it - the version of "Ibis" on the CD is an edit when they could easily have edited most of "Cutaway".

Soon Over Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 5 November 2004 11:56 (nineteen years ago) link

I shall cut that last post and add it to the insert....

Regards to you.

They should really have asked me to supply the sleevenotes for "Unlimited Edition" - using the post above

Soon Over Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 5 November 2004 12:07 (nineteen years ago) link

dadaismus totally otm with that 'unlimited edition' summing up.
i love 'bel air'.

zappi (joni), Friday, 5 November 2004 12:11 (nineteen years ago) link

... it could only be better than Bobby Gillespie's "I jammed wth Can 20-odd years after they were any good and those guys, like, respect me, honest..." schtick

Soon Over Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 5 November 2004 12:12 (nineteen years ago) link

I hope they get the rest of these done quickly. I've kind of like Can, but never really paid them the attention they deserve. I found I had a copy of the free ltd edn sampler CD which they were giving away when the albums came out on CD back in 97. It's weird - the sound on the sampler is absolutely thunderous, yet my CD of Future Days is really thin. I'm totally blown away by 'Sunshine Day and Night' from 'Saw Delight' at the moment.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 8 November 2004 14:55 (nineteen years ago) link

But the full version of "Doko E" that runs for 20 minutes is pretty amazing - Damo getting more and more freaked as the thing churns relentlessly. The edit on "Unlimited Edition" doesn't do that song justice.

Lefty, Monday, 8 November 2004 15:16 (nineteen years ago) link

I wonder if the coming remasters kickstart a widespread reappraisal of the post-Damo Can albums.

Dominique (dleone), Monday, 8 November 2004 15:22 (nineteen years ago) link

I hope so! Hurrah for disco-Can!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 8 November 2004 16:17 (nineteen years ago) link

Unlimited Edition was my first Can album, actually. As such, I take a different view of it. For one, its sequencing makes it a fairly hallucinogenic listen — which is kind of cool, and renders otherwise superfluous tracks like "Musette" and some of the Ethnological Forgery Series much more interesting, I think (don't remember exactly which one it was, but I like the faux-Dixieland number myself). For an odds n' sods record, it holds together rather well, I think.

As a side-note, is it just me or is "Gommorha" almost an exact rip-off of another track ca. Babaluma? "Dizzy Dizzy" maybe? I can't remember exactly — but I'm guessing it's from the same sessions.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 18 November 2004 16:33 (nineteen years ago) link

So, where are these? Haven't seen any in the stores yet.

donut christ (donut), Thursday, 18 November 2004 20:01 (nineteen years ago) link

NTI: going over "Gommorha" in my head, the song that it reminds me most of is a section of "Bel Air", with the descending chord pattern (I think played on bass in "Bel Air").

Dominique (dleone), Thursday, 18 November 2004 20:21 (nineteen years ago) link

Hmmm. Could be as well, but I'm almost completely certain that one of the Babaluma tracks has what is at least an almost-identical arrangement to "Gommorha"'s. That they would do this—use the arrangement for one cut and the harmonic progression for another—would not surprise me in the least, given their pedigree.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 18 November 2004 20:29 (nineteen years ago) link

I noticed that too, NTI, I expect "Gommorha" is just an excerpt from a Babaluma jam where they returned to the earlier chords. Don't the liners mention 1974? I forget...

It sounds very spontaneous, you can hear everyone settling into the sequence, noodling about.

(Jon L), Thursday, 18 November 2004 20:36 (nineteen years ago) link

Dec 1973, apparently, for the song, which I guess puts it right in line with when they would have been making Babaluma.

Dominique (dleone), Thursday, 18 November 2004 21:02 (nineteen years ago) link

Do we know if it is, in fact, "Dizzy Dizzy"?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 18 November 2004 21:03 (nineteen years ago) link

I think you've got a particularly rarified but valid interview question there.

(Jon L), Thursday, 18 November 2004 21:08 (nineteen years ago) link

It doesn't sound anything like "Dizzy Dizzy"! However the intro section of "Cutaway" does sound like "Dizzy Dizzy" and so was obviously not recorded in May 1969, (there's another section too with synth on it that could not have come from 1969). Then again, bits of "Ibis" sound like "Dizzy Dizzy" too - tho possibly the bits edited out of the CD version as discussed above.

De Doo Doo Doo De Da Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 19 November 2004 13:19 (nineteen years ago) link

Have these things been dynamically maximised or not, does anyone know?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 19 November 2004 13:30 (nineteen years ago) link

Does anyone know what that means?

De Doo Doo Doo De Da Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 19 November 2004 13:32 (nineteen years ago) link

I think Pashmina means shoved through a T1 Ultramaximiser or some such to achieve maximum loudness and flatten the dynamics. Regrettably standard procedure with many reissue projects - making 70s live-to-tape sound as impactful as Destiny's Child (and just as airless).

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 19 November 2004 13:35 (nineteen years ago) link

Given that "the albums were all remastered from the original master tapes and were overseen and attended by Holger, Irmin and Jono Podmore", I'm hoping that Holger and Irmin pooh-poohed that idea - can't speak for this Podmore fellow tho

De Doo Doo Doo De Da Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 19 November 2004 13:38 (nineteen years ago) link

It doesn't sound anything like "Dizzy Dizzy"!

That's because it wasn't "Gommorah" that sounded like "Dizzy Dizzy" — upon revisiting my CD collection last night, I realized it was the last track on Unlimited Edition I was thinking about, "Ibis". If you take the keyboard sound off of it and add Michael Karoli's vocals and violin, it's virtually the exact same track — same beat, same staccato guitar licks, everything. Though it dates from Sept. '74, which seems a little late, it sounds as if it might be them finding their way into "Dizzy Dizzy"...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Friday, 19 November 2004 15:19 (nineteen years ago) link

The dynamics sound similar.

If anything it sounds less processed than before - it's certainly less harsh and trebley than before.

My only gripe is there seems to be some kind of noise-reduction gate (or other noise reduection technique) which occasionaly gives a senation of "pumping".

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 19 November 2004 15:35 (nineteen years ago) link

two months pass...
I heard that the next four in the Can catalogue (Future Days, Soon Over Babaluma, [Whatever Two Come Next]) are getting released in May. Can anyone confirm this?

Also, the vinyl remasters of the first four will be released with this batch of CDs... i mean, that's why i heard.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Friday, 18 February 2005 06:05 (nineteen years ago) link

I have Can albums on CASSETTE. (I didn't have a CD player when the Mute reissues came out in '89 or so.)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 18 February 2005 06:22 (nineteen years ago) link

That's great news about the vinyl, I've been after "Soundtracks" for years

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Friday, 18 February 2005 06:22 (nineteen years ago) link

ooh, remastered Landed and Flow Motion?

(though I wonder if they'll get to the oddities like "Turtle Have Short Legs" or any of the collections like Can Delay 1968)

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 18 February 2005 07:26 (nineteen years ago) link

So what's the deal? Should I buy Can reissues on vinyl? What is this SACD business? Am I a sucker and is one born every minute? etc. etc. to be continued...

Tim has them on cassette. Ooh. Quite the rebel! The audacity of owning Can on cassette! Or not...etc etc etc ad infinitum.

I hear a voice saying "just own them on all possible formats, then you CAN maybe get some sleep at night"

Bimble... (Bimble...), Friday, 18 February 2005 07:48 (nineteen years ago) link

The cassettes sound OK actually.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 18 February 2005 08:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh I wasn't doubting they sounded fine, Tim.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Friday, 18 February 2005 08:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Are they recorded in Dubley?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 18 February 2005 11:27 (nineteen years ago) link

Cologne, I believe

LOL.

Wait, vinyl remasters? What the hell is this vinyl copy of Tago Mago I bought a year ago before the cds were announced?

Has anyone ever noticed that the melody of the Buzzcock's "Sitting Round At Home" is the same as that of "Bel Air"?

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 20:32 (nineteen years ago) link

Given that Shelley was a huge krautrock fan.. not a surprise at all.

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 20:36 (nineteen years ago) link

Except that it's a Steve Diggle song.

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 20:37 (nineteen years ago) link

why don't they record something new instead of remastering and reissuing their albums every six months?

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 20:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Ha!

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 20:44 (nineteen years ago) link

Well, Diggle was probably a krauthead too!
