I have concluded over the years that Tom Verlaine, Gordon Gano, Frank Black, Jandek, and Rufus Wainright all have the same, or very similar, voices

Especially Jandek and Tom Verlaine. Agree or disagree.

Jandek's voice is too whispery.

not sure about rufus either. not quite pointy enough.

but here's one more who goes with all those others: the guy who sang for human sexual response.

You don't think Verlaine is a little more, I dunno, pretty-boy/prissy than Gano and Black is more mentalist than either?

i think frank black sounds a lot like iggy pop.

Andy Partridge sang on a couple songs for Spirit and The Yardbirds or at least my ears make me think so.

earlnash, Friday, 30 April 2004 23:37 (nineteen years ago) link

Rufus sounds a lot like Thom Yorkie to these here ears.

No.

Jeffrey Lee Pierce (of the Gun Club) might belong somewhere in the above list.

I think your grasping at straws here. Which could be a pun, because straws are sometimes called reeds, and I think "REEDY" is the word that everyone's thinking but nobody's saying when it comes to the voices mentioned. Because Lou Reed doesn't sound like that.

Huck, Saturday, 1 May 2004 01:36 (nineteen years ago) link

Verlaine and Gano sound nothing alike. v

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 1 May 2004 01:47 (nineteen years ago) link

uh... yeah ok. I never like actually sat down and compared them. Totally grasping at straws. I stand by Jandek though. And yeah, Radiohead - We Suck Young Blood sounds exactly like Rufus Wainright.

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Saturday, 1 May 2004 01:58 (nineteen years ago) link

Richard Lloyd said something to the effect that Verlaine sang "like a goat with its throat slit." I think that applies to everyone but Rufus. As for Frank Black, his singing is the reason I've never gotten into the Pixies despite years of trying to.

(Truman Capote), Saturday, 1 May 2004 08:15 (nineteen years ago) link

Isn't his singing the most noteworthy thing about the Pixies?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 1 May 2004 09:14 (nineteen years ago) link

I always considered Joey Santiago's guitar the most distinctive thing about'em, personally

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 1 May 2004 09:46 (nineteen years ago) link

....`cos I'm a big rockist guitar fetishist, after alls

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 1 May 2004 09:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Rufus Wain sounds like Nilsson.

eddie hurt (ddduncan), Sunday, 2 May 2004 01:16 (nineteen years ago) link

that's the biggest letdown about the Pixies reunion...Frank Black is actually a hell of a singer now (check out Show Me You Tears for proof), but he never really does much in the Pixies' material. I mean, falsetto/growl/scream/sarcasmo, it's cool and shit, but I really like his singing NOW.

LOUDEN Wainwright sounds a lot more like Jandek etc. than Rufus

Andrew L (Andrew L), Sunday, 2 May 2004 10:10 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't believe I've ever consciously listened to Rufus Wainwright.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 2 May 2004 12:41 (nineteen years ago) link

Me with a recent encounter with Rufus's new album: "Thom Yorke?"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 2 May 2004 13:52 (nineteen years ago) link

Isaac Brock from Modest Mouse could forge a link between Frank Black and Jandek

paulhw (paulhw), Sunday, 2 May 2004 18:56 (nineteen years ago) link

Isaac Brock sounds more like Perry Farrell to me.

Huck, Monday, 3 May 2004 04:02 (nineteen years ago) link

Rufus's inferior version of "Hallelujah" (covered so much better by Buckley) doesn't do much for me, but I liked, uhm...La complainte de la butte

Yo quiero Jandek.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 5 August 2005 23:52 (eighteen years ago) link

The thesis argument of this thread is really, really odd. The idea that Gordon Gano and Frank Black have voices that are even remotely similar to each other is just... um.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 6 August 2005 04:47 (eighteen years ago) link

On Rufus W's early recordings, the guy whose voice Rufus's reminded me the most of -- and sort'o unexpecto-nonleasantly so, mostly -- was Thom York really ("white dudes be whinin" indeed).

LOUDEN Wainwright sounds a lot more like Jandek etc. than Rufus

OTM but early Louden sounds most like Gordon Gano to me. I have no idea where this Frank Black shit comes from.

marmotwolof, Saturday, 4 August 2007 20:24 (sixteen years ago) link

Rufus Wainwright sounds nothing like Frank Black. But he sounds a lot like Thom Yorke. They've got the same mumble and vibrato.

St3ve Go1db3rg, Saturday, 4 August 2007 20:36 (sixteen years ago) link

I can see a comparison, kinda, between these guys, but they sound very, very different to me.

roxymuzak, Saturday, 4 August 2007 21:07 (sixteen years ago) link

the style of of music/delivery etc. is different for each of these artists too

Charlie Howard, Sunday, 5 August 2007 05:58 (sixteen years ago) link

Basically Loudon and Gano are the only dudes I have thought of as sounding alike at all before this thread.

marmotwolof, Sunday, 5 August 2007 06:12 (sixteen years ago) link

Tom Verlaine sounds like Patti Smith!

I know, right?, Sunday, 5 August 2007 15:09 (sixteen years ago) link
