lag∞n, Monday, 9 June 2014 15:49 (nine years ago) link

sally's is sublime. apparently they are trying to sell the place though, pretty sad.

BAR definitely does not have the old world new haven italian charm but tbf their pizza is really good. beer is nothing special but it's nice enough.

somehow i have never been to the original pepe's, i've been to the fairfield one and it's great.

marcos, Monday, 9 June 2014 15:50 (nine years ago) link

My favorite anecdote about new haven is this apocryphal story I heard there

That new haven and new york were both major ports back in the 19th century and were comparable

Then some law or something happened so they diverted all the ships to New York and not New Haven

If only this reg hadn't done that then New Haven would have been as big as New York today

It makes me smile because I'm like... aw that's sweet but don't kid yourselves

I just checked on google maps and Sally's has apizza in their name too. Apizza apizza apizza apizza

, Monday, 9 June 2014 15:52 (nine years ago) link

new haven also has a mamoun's falafel joint that it is open super late and has really cheap falafel and all kinds of cool rugs on the walls:

watch out for ticks!

lag∞n, Monday, 9 June 2014 15:57 (nine years ago) link

I was friends with someone from Vermont who had moved down to Arkansas. She was amazed by the huge gas and fast-food signs on the interstate that she had seen on the way down, and wondered if any of us had ever actually seen them get lowered telescopically to change the light bulbs.

Kinda hated having to reveal the truth on that one.

co-worker: Ticks in the conference room.
ILXor: Yeah, I'd like to suck on some of that!
co-worker: o_O

<ILXor goes to conference room, sees it's actual Lyme-disease carrying ticks and not minor-league baseball game tickets>

ILXor: Noooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!

, Monday, 9 June 2014 15:59 (nine years ago) link

Maybe if you're from a family of whalers, you think everything works like a telescope.

also re: pizza sally's and pepe's use COAL-fired ovens for their pizza. not even wood-fired. kind of crazy

marcos, Monday, 9 June 2014 16:00 (nine years ago) link

all the super old school places use coal grimaldis and lombardis in ny, mustve been the thing at the time

lag∞n, Monday, 9 June 2014 16:01 (nine years ago) link

There's also a mamouns right around NYU or at least there was when I was in school. It was cheap and good and now I want falafel.

The Merrit is my favorite road to drive. So twisty!

ive always thought pepe's & sallys were overrated

this is my fav ct pizza, note also coal-fired, but its really abt the sauce -- http://hartford.firstandlasttavern.com/about-us

johnny crunch, Monday, 9 June 2014 16:03 (nine years ago) link

mamouns is great b/c the falafel is priced accordingly. it's like $3.50. i went had lunch there with some friends before my wedding. it was like $2.80 back then. it can feel kind of hard nowadays to find falafel for less than $5. some places even charge like $8 bucks, fuckin ripoff

marcos, Monday, 9 June 2014 16:05 (nine years ago) link

The Mamouns on macdougal and cream cheese bagels from bagels on the square is basically how I eat for less than $10 a day in NYC

or springfield, or new bedford, or lynn, or chelsea, or holyoke, or or or or or

See now I like Holyoke. It's like, liminal. A lot of New England feels too, like, organized or something. Where is the weird?

Kornblud (admrl), Monday, 9 June 2014 16:18 (nine years ago) link

new england is not about the weird, you have the rest of the country for that

lag∞n, Monday, 9 June 2014 16:23 (nine years ago) link

btw check out this map the green parts are census blocks with zero residents, n maine is the least populated place east of the rockies (w texas maybe)
