Ranch might be the most american word there is. The sound of it, the meaning, the house style, the dressing. It's 100% American.

I mean there are all these british comedians called "Jimmy Pram" or "Tolliver Whelk" or whatever that the britishers on the board seem to reference a lot.

American comedy is painfully unfunny. There's no real bite, no real cynicism, it always has to be nicey nicey in the end. A or B list, SNL fits that bill surely.

Le Bateau Ivre, Sunday, 4 February 2018 23:11 (eight years ago)

today, sure. I think SNL at its best (maybe 80s-early 90s) was good exactly because it captured and spoofed that wide-eyed lack of cynicism. Kevin Nealon comes to mind, and all of the fake commercials. Since at least Will Ferrell and maybe going back to Chris Farley and Adam Sandler though the style of comedy has been very "I AM BEING FUNNY RIGHT NOW! DO YOU SEE ME BEING FUNNY!"

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Sunday, 4 February 2018 23:15 (eight years ago)

(kind of a dumb comment I guess since Nealon overlapped with Farley and Sandler)

Do Americans have to talk so loudly?

― Please play Lou Reed's irritating guitar sounds (Tom D.), Thursday, 26 December 2024 16:38 (one year ago) bookmarkflaglink

Hate to return to this subject but I'm sitting in the company canteen just and there's one American woman having a conversation with someone else and she is drowning out people who are sitting much nearer to me. I can't make out a word the person she is with is saying, she's like ten times as loud as him

"No fair" instead of "not fair"?

Tom D, focussed with getting on with the job (Tom D.), Monday, 8 June 2026 21:57 (two days ago)

it’s a weird construction that’s so ingrained that i’ve never realized that it’s weird!

spandex polka (Hunt3r), Monday, 8 June 2026 23:40 (two days ago)

i'd only use it as exclamation, never in a real sentence, but it is weird

circles, Tuesday, 9 June 2026 05:03 (yesterday)

On a similar note, saying "on accident" instead "by accident".

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Tuesday, 9 June 2026 06:10 (yesterday)

In the West of Scotland "no" means "not" (and, just for the record, "naw" means "no" (adverb) and "nae" means "no" (adjective)) so that Association song has always sounded quite amusing to me.

Tom D, focussed with getting on with the job (Tom D.), Tuesday, 9 June 2026 07:16 (yesterday)

isn't 'no fair' kind of the same thing as 'no fun'?

silverfish, Tuesday, 9 June 2026 12:22 (yesterday)

On a similar note, saying "on accident" instead "by accident".

That kind of annoys me too but I get why people say it to mirror “on purpose”

The Immortal Bird of Avon (Boring, Maryland), Tuesday, 9 June 2026 12:24 (yesterday)

(xp) Fair is not a noun though, unless you mean a county fair or sumthin'

Tom D, focussed with getting on with the job (Tom D.), Tuesday, 9 June 2026 12:29 (yesterday)

Some good discussion here, including the observation that "no fair," especially when used in its own as an interjection, is often associated with children.

jaymc, Tuesday, 9 June 2026 13:03 (yesterday)

when I saw the initial post my brain went straight to inventing an etymology that came from "nae fair"

mh, Tuesday, 9 June 2026 13:57 (yesterday)

Yeah, “NO FAIR” immediately makes me think of Our Gang style kids arguing about marbles or whatever.
