iirc the only problem with ILX doing periodic fundraisers for the hosting was meeting our goals so fast that US folks couldn't pitch in

Don't worry, I'll bring it back once this thing with Google's done. It's a massive pain in the ass, but is mostly just down to a bug in their "policy violation appeal" form.

We need to talk about the funding situ again at some point soon though, because it's hard to know what to do. The old yearly fund drives were OK (although a pain to administer), but when we moved to Amazon for hosting it meant there's both a yearly cost *and* a hard-to-predict monthly cost. I didn't like having cash just sitting burning a hole in an account, and I also didn't like not knowing how much any potential shortfall could be.

Google was a great fix for that side of it, but the more you make from them the more they investigate you, and we've got an archive-load of stuff they Don't Like.

I guess there are a few options here - subscriptions, someone else handling funds, moving out of Amazon, something else. I'll have a look around and consider tech options first. Amazon is great, but it's also not cheap.

Ah, I didn't know the thing about monthly costs, I don't think. Otherwise I'd just be advocating a straight return to funding drives.

i think it is because the ILX thread was linked in the Wiki thread, so they were able to find it. if that wasn't linked there i doubt there would have been a problem.
