i have a local mixed surface ride i like to do in the winter, and i wonder if a ss would get it done for me, as it has some vert. if i ever upgrade my commuter (a ss cx iro frame but with an 8spd hub) i may build it up ss. it sounds great, but i don't know if i'd use it so much. i'd probly have to sell my reg cx to justify, but having a reg cx backup bike is v. useful. i already have too many bikes cluttering shit up, tho they all get used.

it's extremely hard to drop a chain on a ss. also, less moving parts (derailleurs) = less chance of getting your drivetrain mucked up in inclimate conditions.

reflectors are appropriate on a commuter/utility bike imo, though the pedal ones will break off shortly anyway. i mean, there are better reflectors out there, but i think they're ok for now. better than a ride on the hood of car.

Feel like reflectors are worth keeping, in general. There have been a few times when I've been driving and haven't seen cyclists' lights, but their reflectors popped out at me.

Dan I., Wednesday, 27 July 2011 21:07 (twelve years ago) link

Almost any lights below Superflash caliber are almost worthless imo, which is not to say everyone shouldn't have them anyway

uh... ok.

when my randonneurs (finally) wear out, im getting another pair with reflector sidewalls. ive been astonished by the toughness and longevity of randonneurs. no flats in 3800 mi on the rear!

they're not reflectors, they're lights. they're required by the city of alexandria. apparently cops are really vigilant about harassing bike people.

at least on the back if that's what you're talking about.

tehresa, Thursday, 28 July 2011 02:48 (twelve years ago) link

(there were reflectors front/back that i took off to put on the lights. anyway.)

Yeah, I need to make some adjustments. Local (and national) cycling champ T0m St@n1ford is going to give me some pointers.

luv how heated SLAM THAT STEM blog is getting at gerard vroonen's recent 'low bars are not necessarily the best' articles (aka justification on why they've made all the cervelo head tubes longer)

also dr. inigo just published a report on how aero can be a power suck.

... a rider's 3rd or 4th most aero position out of the windtunnel may be their fastest.

Vroomen had a great post on a position which I find very comfortable; loose grip on TE hoods, arms bent at the elbows, elbows directly under the shoulders and behind the hoods. Works nicely with the marginally shorter top tube I have on the bmc.

I'm about to have a new photo for tt. My bro just took a fixed out of storage, swapped it to a freewheel, and bequeathed it to me and to the Brooklyn streets. Very, very excited!!!

My first ss! And it only weighs like 15 lbs!

Haven't adjusted any geometry, just put it in the car and brought it home. <3 <3 <3

I don't even know what make it is? Or what the parts are, except the ones that say "Specialized" on 'em. V light, even twitchy.

specialized langster, i reckon. pretty good freebie!

I'll say it's a pretty good freebie! My brother had it in storage because it's not even one of his top 3 most-ridden bikes since he built up a Crosscheck for everyday and some kind of mtn bike and something else, I forget. I feel just giddy to have it. Doesn't fit me yet but i'll tweak.

Sweet.

My bike is coming today, it is it is!! I used shipbikes.com and got a bike box from the local store who were happy to throw me one from their store-room--the price was TOTALLY cheap for 3-day FedEx ground shipping to NY!

I brought wrenches to work and plan is to assemble it here and ride it home.
