can you guys recommend any web sites with information about basic bike maintenance/repair, specifically with information about how to best customize one's bike for your riding conditions/style/etc.? preferably sites that are friendly to the mechanically inept and bike inexperienced?

I made some bookmarks at home for this kind of thing, but they definitely included Park Tools and Sheldon Brown.

www.bicycletutor.com is pretty nice due to having a couple dozen nice, straightforward, video tutorials for most common repair jobs. The Park and Sheldon Brown sites are also great but sometimes it's nice to actually watch someone do something.
