That makes sense: the socks aren't windproof, so their waffle knit isn't actually holding any warm air in. You need the windproof layer OVER the insulated layer.

"well, if you squint juuuuust right those socks look like team shoe covers!"

ive not seen this as much recently, its old school and maybe reflects a time when decent shoe covers were not so easy to score. yknow-"COPPI DID IT LIKE THIS BEYOTCHES!"

speaking of robster craws, LG makes these convertible finger into robster groves:

*stunned silence* breakthru or dubious achievmnt?

i heart most LG stuff.

Hunt3r, Thursday, 29 November 2007 18:12 (eighteen years ago)

Today was the first day here it was too cold to ride without gloves. I must've looked funny to my (awesome) neighbor turning around halfway down the street and riding right back home like a pink-knuckled pussy.

nickalicious, Thursday, 29 November 2007 22:51 (eighteen years ago)

My commuting shoes - they look like regular trainers and are fine for walking in. I've even been dancing in 'em.

Oh and I rode in today for the first time in two weeks. On the way back had to stop sharply for a) guy reversing on to main road; 2) guy driving on to pavement to skip queue and turn left; iii) taxi driver pulling in in front of me.

ledge, Thursday, 29 November 2007 23:58 (eighteen years ago)

those look perfect except for laces, where do where they from?

Hunt3r, Friday, 30 November 2007 00:42 (eighteen years ago)

those are specialized methinks.

cutty, Friday, 30 November 2007 04:39 (eighteen years ago)

Oh and I rode in today for the first time in two weeks.

yeah i was wondering where you were!

cutty, Friday, 30 November 2007 04:40 (eighteen years ago)

You guys it's so hard to want to go to sleep once you've biked home drunk in the cold -- I am wound up in all ways. Fortunately I took tomorrow off so I can stay up and decompress.

Laurel, Friday, 30 November 2007 05:07 (eighteen years ago)

xp yeah weather and waking up exhausted (what the hell is that about) has been putting me off - but I haven't given up.

Shoes are specialized sonoma. Laces are not ideal it's true - looks like they've got a new pair with velcro but they look more bike geeky obviously.

I'm annoyed with myself for not cycling in today. I think I'll make up for it by cycling to the football tomorrow afternoon (6 miles there, 6 miles back, meh).

Mark C, Friday, 30 November 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

k, it was 12 deg at departure, 16 at arrival. im announcing thats hittin my limits of "fun." i dint realize it but i had beardfrost and got on the elevator to stares, saw reflection looking a mess, cringed. s'alright tho no partners or coworkers on the lift.

i actually rode in a pair of reg shoes on my atacs today. wasnt that good, but maybe i should just buy flat pedals?

Hunt3r, Friday, 30 November 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

I lied, as soon as my body temp started dropping, I fell asleep. It took about 15 minutes.

Laurel, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

Hunter, talk me through how you psyche/warm yourself up for leaving the house in temperatures like that, knowing that within second you'll have -10 worth of wind chill in your face and that any residual heat your body has will be sucked out of it within 200 yards?

Mark C, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)

and we're back live. its 12:30 am and im still at wokr. anyway, the answwer is:

1. I have to drop 2 kids off at daycare before i ride in, so its so fediculously hectic that i dont have time to worry about it being cold.

2. Mantra a: "this is the most fun ill have all day yeah!"

3. mantra b: "IM SUPERBAD! ive suffered waaaaay more than this before."

4. pray for string of hardcore bangers on mp3 player

5. wuss out and get on the bus or lightrail with bike. (never done this due to the cold.)

Hunt3r, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 07:30 (eighteen years ago)

yucks at 4.

caek, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 11:28 (eighteen years ago)

kudos at 4!

cutty, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 12:53 (eighteen years ago)

Urg no riding since chicago, now in cairo, via new york, london and berlin. My back hurts as well, (I need to stop walking round with a heavy laptop case over one shoulder). Generally bored and in a bad mood, I'd rather be cycling.

Ed, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 12:57 (eighteen years ago)

Cycled to work yesterday after 5 days of inactivity and my lungs didn't much like it. It's going to rain solidly for the rest of the week so I'd better set the trainer up again.

Mark C, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

got re-tested today by the coach--8% increase in my lactate threshold! wooot

cutty, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 23:58 (eighteen years ago)

hella snow all over

skipped work yesterday to run errands, was going to do the same today (2 days more consistent, yo), but will probably get called out for being afraid of the weather or something, which will be irritating.

gbx, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

easy 1 hour ride in re-calibrated HR Z2

hey guys did i mention i love to ride my bicycle?

cutty, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 16:38 (eighteen years ago)

since i rode home last night so late that it was this morning, i can say that ill get three rides and 42 miles in today, w beautiful weather. crazy warm.

Hunt3r, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 17:30 (eighteen years ago)

I have to figure out new neighborhood and what to bike to, where is LBS, etc etc. Found the grocery store, have a vague idea of stuff, but wish it was nicer weather so it wd be comfy to just cruise around looking at streets.

Laurel, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

Where do you live now?

Mark C, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 23:03 (eighteen years ago)

i am typing 1 handed and am lortabbed out hooray

nickalicious, Thursday, 6 December 2007 18:09 (eighteen years ago)

NOOOOOOOOOOO. speedy recovery.

it rained/sleeted hard on me at 1:30 am on my (abbreviated 20 min) ride home. the cold the rain the street lights- when old clientele came on, i was all, EXACTLY THIS.

Hunt3r, Thursday, 6 December 2007 18:32 (eighteen years ago)

that sucks. live strong.

caek, Thursday, 6 December 2007 18:36 (eighteen years ago)

holy shit nick. i like your gusto with the trainer though. don't let clavicle bring you down like it did ddb!

today:

Gym - after a good warm up 20' on spin trainer at 90-100RPM, do this circuit of exercises 4 times, with as little time between machines as possible, so to make a good aerobic workout too:

1. Leg Press (possible a 60 degrees inclined): 22 repetitions with 90-100lbs load on machine.

2. Incline Board Sit-Ups. (body weight)- 20 repetitions.

3. Back extensions. (body weight). Perform 18 repetitions.

4. Leg extensions: 20 repetitions with light weight (try the machine, I suppose 30kg of load is ok for you on the average machine)

5. Leg Curl: 20 reps with light weight (70lbs should be ok)

6. Spinning. Pedal for 3', with a cadence of 95-100 RPM, keeping your Heart Rate around 130 beats/minute.

After the gym, if possible do 30mins on spin bike, or 1hour easy on the road.

cutty, Thursday, 6 December 2007 18:58 (eighteen years ago)

Thats very similar to my core routine. I'd arguably bag leg extension and add lunges with 25-30 pound 'bells. 4 sets of 20 each side. if you do them right, it has the benefit of huge quad and core workout, plus good for balance/proprioception, plus huge cardiovascular (i was able to blow myself up doing a long set of these, they're brutal). theyre also safer and easier than step up squats.

high rep seated rows are also a good core routine (most people don't do these even remotely correctly tho).

Hunt3r, Thursday, 6 December 2007 19:19 (eighteen years ago)

thank you sir i will throw in some lunges too

cutty, Thursday, 6 December 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

i'll be ok, I should be healed up soon. I can't NOT ride now though, that's what THEY'D want. Also I'm finally feeling vaguely healthy for the first time in years; it wouldn't take but two weeks of buttplantery to fall all the way back - I am a champion class layabout.

I'm going to look for some 1st person video of rollercoasters or somethung for trainering.

nickalicious, Friday, 7 December 2007 03:59 (eighteen years ago)

why not watch races? that works REALLY well

cutty, Friday, 7 December 2007 05:21 (eighteen years ago)

ddb, Friday, 7 December 2007 16:10 (eighteen years ago)

pinning is cool. some time in the mid 90s rebecca twigg broke her collarbone 11 days before worlds. she had it plated/pinned, then won a gold medal and set WR in a her pursuit race. badass.

Hunt3r, Friday, 7 December 2007 17:23 (eighteen years ago)

oh, 1 hour this morning EASY spins, nice and cold out

cutty, Friday, 7 December 2007 17:27 (eighteen years ago)

MY RIDE THIS MORNING WAS PEPPERED WITH A SWEET ALTERCATION WITH A LIVERY DRIVER WHO TOLD ME THAT HE SHOULD RUN ME OVER...THEN I CAUGHT HIM AT THE LIGHT AND CALLED HIM A FAT PIECE OF SHIT....WHICH WAS NICE.
