I've been looking for some vintage steel, and on Friday I found some: a 1976 Raleigh Gran Sport (Carlton-built). I'll convert it to fixed, getting it some new wheels and odds and ends, but the randonneur bars and front brake (Weinmann centerpull) get to stay. It's got a velvety ride, tons of soul, and I'm so stoked.

anyone here ever used a seatpost clamp on rear rack? im looking to turn my decrepit mtb into my bailout icy condition commuter. i got some cheap studded tires coming.

i want to keep using my bike bureau on a rack, but im unsure if a seatpost mount can really bear a single sided 15-18 lbs max load.

I've used a rack with seatpost clamp. It worked fine in terms of carrying loads, but it wrecked havoc on the bike's handling. Seatpost racks sit higher than conventional racks and when leaning into a turn, I could really feel the difference. Did not like it at all and gave up on it after a few weeks.

thx, thats an interesting point. i was more concerned with it rotating on the post under load.

the conditions i will be using it under-- i dont think ill be leaning into turns too much. hmm.

My rack was pretty robust, so I didn't have a problem with it twisting. I wouldn't get one of the quick-release type clamps for obvious reasons.

As for handling, if you're building up a beater/utility type rig, then performance is kind of not an issue. The higher center of gravity might get kind of dicey on slippery surfaces though.

yah, yr post caused me to scrutinize an mtb locked outside my building with a post rack. it was about my bike's size. the rack did not bend down towards the rear tire as the one above, it was straight. it was ginormously high from the rear wheel, so i can imagine that would be poor.

Super Cub, I'll try to get some pics of it this weekend, before I start doing any mods (I'm resigned to it taking me a while, b/c I'm super-busy these days). From the looks of the brazing and the paintjob, it appears that the Carlton shop had its hands full trying to keep up with Raleigh's production schedule.

how is the stock gearing?

42x16 surprisingly not as forgiving on the bridge uphills as i expected it to be. great on the flats. really comfortable ride.

I wouldn't think you'd want to go much lower than 42x16 - unless you're really into spinning.

42x16 is my commuting ratio of choice. Good for a quick getaway from the lights but still fast enough on the flats.

getting booties big enough for mtb shoes is my issue. the neoprene size 13s dont really fit over my 11.5 mtb shoes. i cut out the back zipper and just pull them over as far as they'll go. works fine as long as i dont need to walk.
