last time i rented a car in the uk it was an audi wagon and it was in most respects the highlight of my life and it's been downhill from there.

I don't really get this -- so the Subaru Outback is a station wagon and the Forester is a crossover/SUV? I think of those cars as kind of indistinguishable and purchased by the same kind of people. (I drive a Forester.)
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 16 November 2022 19:55 (one year ago) link
imo neither are wagons, since neither have a third pillar (plus they have the clearance of an suv not a sedan)
i think the only brands currently making wagons are audi, bmw, benz and volvo. and as we already discussed they are all crazy expensive, which cuts into the budget for kobe steak and helicopter fuel
― the late great, Wednesday, 16 November 2022 19:58 (one year ago) link
the outback is definitely longer in the back than a forester
― 龜, Wednesday, 16 November 2022 19:58 (one year ago) link
confusingly, the outback used to be available as a sedan

forester is a little taller and squarer than the outback but lol yeah they are comically similar
actually if you have, say, a 2002 forester, i think that might count?

Let’s look back on that 2002 model; the first WRX to be sold in North America and, it can be argued, the one that made Subaru into a household name not only for dog-walking enthusiasts but for driving enthusiasts too.
but according to wikipedia impreza WRXs were sold in europe since 92 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_Impreza#WRX

but in reading about it i came across this sentence:
Fisker is also at work on developing solid-state battery technology, which it says would allow future electric vehicles to gain 500 miles worth of charge in as little as one minute.
ehh???

and then the huge wheels necessarily need a thinner rougher riding tire, and you cant see out the tiny windows

One way to use those engines would be as a dedicated power generator to supply a charge to a hybrid car's battery system, rather than powering the vehicle directly when the battery charge was low, one of them said.In that kind of arrangement, gasoline engines could be designed to operate in an "exceptionally efficient mode", one of the sources said.

ultimately whats going to make this conversation moot is faster charging once its more like going to the gas station and less like stopping to read a book battery size wont matter, that and charging stations being as plentiful as gas stations
A study looked at driving habits of 333 people for a year: "More than a third of drivers were able to meet 100 percent of their needs with an EV with a relatively small battery, and didn’t need to make any additional trips for the sole purpose of charging" https://t.co/ZID6Lzwn5u— Alissa Walker (@awalkerinLA) March 2, 2023
― lag∞n, Thursday, 2 March 2023 15:39 (one year ago) link
I know someone who drives an EV and she says she now regards the idea of gas stations as ludicrous and inconvenient. Every day she wakes up with a full charge that lasts for 200 miles
