I wouldn't say it's "authority worship" per se just that like this is literally what running and moderating internet messageboards is for, messageboards are governed by fiat not the rule of law bc they aren't polities.

argue about community norms sure but it's not like the mods are vested with power by the demos they're vested with it by whoever has the root passwd to the EC2 instance

Yeah cmon guys what has stet done for us (other than deal with the server, pay for it sometimes, keep the code running, basically fix all the behind scenes stuff nobody else knows how to do, run every contribution thread and deal with the taxes involved)? What a non contributing out of touch dick.

Honestly I'm just imagining lagoon sitting at home hoping his shitposting at stet will finally get him the ban that will finally earn him some hard posting cred. Grow the fuck up.

Stole it? Who from? The guy who owned the box and was going to shut it all down? The volunteers who spent six months trying to write new code and gave up six lines in? The people who I brought together to save it and who later all quit? (Some of those people also people who wanted to ban you years ago and who I saved you from, btw)

FWIW, ILX is about £900 in the hole to me rn too.

Anyway, I don't think I "own" this place but I do feel responsible for it and admin it -- have done for nearly a decade, far longer than anyone else, and for the most part on my own. One of the things I've always said as part of that deal is that there will be mods and I will have their backs. This is not a democracy.

Also FTR though, I have defrocked more mods for abuse of power than I have banned posters for abuse of mods. Maybe that was the wrong way around.

That's not to pretend that I admin in a way that everyone agrees with tho. But since the days of the drama in the LBZC I've offered to set the disenfranchised people up with their own sites: I'll set them up, give them the code, and help their admin out. All they have to do is pay their own bills.

Sure it's not quite giving you the reins of this place, but still, if you want to steal it back just take me up on that and get the users you care about to go with you.

I know we're dealing with the famed Lagoon self-awareness here but let's not pretend he's speaking for anyone other than a relatively small group of people. Everyone has a skewed perspective of what the culture of ILX is based on the threads they read and who they interact with but it would be a mistake for anyone to assume that encapsulates all of it.
