Markers: I'm more likely to want to ban lashing out at one another (fuck, some sites literally do this!) than I am to agree that mods (who do the site and me a solid) don't deserve a bit of courtesy and the benefit of the doubt when modding.

I mean I'm not asking they get the awful fawning adulation that eg the metafilter mods get, but an out-the-gate combative stance adopted for anything beyond a title fix — on what is really a pretty lightly modded site! — has to go.

The current crop of mods don’t seem to deserve “the benefit of the doubt,” tbh. They’ve done one super hasty thing and now this questionable shit just in the past few days!

There is no rule about being nice to people on ILX that I am aware of. People have always been rude to each other here, and people have always been nice to each other here. If you want to put that rule in place, I think that’s a whole other debate, but it seems pretty clear to me from how things have gone for the past many years I’ve been here is that most things are tolerated between posters short of shit that is obviously beyond the pale. Calling someone a “chickenshit idiot” or whatever is totally not beyond the pale in the context of many other things that have been said here and allowed to stand w/o someone getting hit with a ban.

seems to me you can't have it both ways -- i.e. if jjustin wants to be treated like all the other posters even when he weighs in on mod stuff and be taken no differently, then you can't also say "we expect a different standard from posters when arguing about mod stuff to mods vs. other posters".

i don't think this needed a separate thread, but while we're here, i think demanding a different standard of civility for dealing with mods as opposed to other posters is a new idea and a poor precedent. with respect, like.

This is an untrue assertion. One of the reasons I quit modding is because the posting community overturned to the point where the budget-Doms who take any level of call for civility as an attack on their inailiable rights as human beings on a privately-owned message board outnumbered the people who are capable of being adults.

like for instance obvs the mod dynamic causes jj a lot of personal consternation and identity crisis but he has been almost entirely a very nice boy in his modding actions since the mod wars knocked out his more daring role models

It's disingenuous here to pretend that Stet is "a mod", and not, like the guy who devotes a fuckload of his own time and I believe also some of his money to keep this place going. I think this was possibly a straw-that-broke-the-camels-back moment after what's been quite a stressful few days when it comes to admin-ing this place. Possibly you guys underestimate quite how wearying it is to have to deal with pointlessly petulant little tantrums like this for a prolonged period of time. Personally I just walk away for a while when I get into that state but everyone has their personal sanity threshold and that is sometimes exceeded.

At the end of the day, it's a privilege and not a right to post here and Stet can ban who he wants IMO, because it's very likely that the site literally wouldn't exist without him. That he pretty much never does so is because of the general patience and tolerance that makes him the right person to keep it going, considering previous site runners like Andrew an Graham have pretty much decided to kick the whole thing over whenever it got too much.

FWIW How's Life was absolutely right to come down on Deej on that thread, at a time when everyone is justifiably nervy about privacy.
