you would almost have to have read tuomas on the numerous sb threads to understand that one, yes. i wouldn't have been a fan of that banning, but

aw fuck spurs

that was solely as the result of making ridiculous, repetitive arguments ad nauseum on the one subject, aying no regard to any responses peope were giving him.

afair, anyway.

only been actively posting for a year or so but haven't really had a problem with any of the 51'd people being 51'd so far

whiney trollins vs. hipsters (dayo), Saturday, 6 November 2010 14:03 (fifteen years ago)

don't 51 LJ again though :(

i recall reading those and yeah, i agree that he argued to a sort of ridiculous extent. but at the same time, ppl have different arguing styles and i think sometimes ppl are quick to call someone a troll if they disagree w/someone both in the substance of the argument and the manner in which they put it forth

but, yeah, when it comes down to it i guess i just differ in my views w/o many other people here as far as what constitutes chronically annoying or how best to deal w/it.

no biggie, just thought it warranted discussing again in light of the weininggarden thread

loose jorts (del), Saturday, 6 November 2010 14:10 (fifteen years ago)

i was surprised to learn that other perfectly reasonable personalities here had somehow accrued an alarming number of them

That doesn't look good, but none of those people have yet been banned. And in the case of ilxor frinstance, while I'm not sure his infractions deserved a lengthy ban, he had been clearly warned and didn't desist.

yeah i don't get ppl's problem with lj either. at least, don't get why they would have him banned.

oh well.

i don't recall what he was doing that people found issue with, but yeah, that seems fair enough if ppl are warned not to do x but they persist anyhow

loose jorts (del), Saturday, 6 November 2010 14:14 (fifteen years ago)

30 days isn't a lengthy ban

del, i accept you're arguing froma position of sincerity, but you seem to be forgetting just about anything irritating any banned poster might ever have done. ilxor was banned only a few weeks back, cmon.

how about every time you sb someone, you yourself get a sb

whiney trollins vs. hipsters (dayo), Saturday, 6 November 2010 14:22 (fifteen years ago)

finite no of sb's that can e given in a 6 month period. no more than 20, maybe less?

cant believe you sb'd me for that (darraghmac), Saturday, 6 November 2010 14:25 (fifteen years ago)

what if everybody sb's all the mods and then the mods have to ban themselves and then there are no mods and then we have no mods and

wouldn't that be great

whiney trollins vs. hipsters (dayo), Saturday, 6 November 2010 14:34 (fifteen years ago)

maybe you've sb'd loads people and just forgotten

yes i "forgot"! D

loose jorts (del), Saturday, 6 November 2010 14:37 (fifteen years ago)

has dmac ever mounted anything coherent? conscious would be a start

Adrian Roosevelt "Adie" Mike (nakhchivan), Saturday, 6 November 2010 14:37 (fifteen years ago)

i assumed mods were immune to sb's

mods are basically dm's, their posting personas essentially npc's

loose jorts (del), Saturday, 6 November 2010 14:38 (fifteen years ago)

Adrian Roosevelt "Adie" Mike (nakhchivan), Saturday, 6 November 2010 14:39 (fifteen years ago)

from now on as a rule i'm shitbanning all of you with extreme prejudice.

loose jorts (del), Saturday, 6 November 2010 14:41 (fifteen years ago)

we've managed to forget, but in ILX's more contentious past, there were far MORE bannings. they were board bannings (noize, 1p3) not site bans, but were far more common than now. i liked it. you never knew when a ban was coming gour way, wouldn't know why, no one/no way to argue it. kept posters on their toes imo. it was quality control, and those boards were better for it.

now it's all one big board. site new answers. it's too bad.

(651) (156), Saturday, 6 November 2010 17:02 (fifteen years ago)

more like 51 51 666

wakafledia (k3vin k.), Saturday, 6 November 2010 17:08 (fifteen years ago)

honestly, i think that if the posters who get 51-ed have no idea why they're accumulating so many sb's, they must to some extent have their fingers in their ears going "la lalalala i can't hear you." While I'm sure that some posters just press the button as their only means of registering a complaint, there are always several posters who will be more public with their criticism.

sarahel, Saturday, 6 November 2010 17:35 (fifteen years ago)

temporary timeouts can be great. i've basically suggest-banned myself a few times and then come back after some months. my favorite posters are the ones that come and go: amon, estela, roxy. go out in the world, do your thing, then come back to us. del, you're like this and i appreciate it. imo we all need time off from here, self-imposed or not.

there is the danger of TAKING UR BAN 2 SRSLY, and i feel for those people, but then i look at jordan and whiney and even morbius: ok u guyz got me, i'll take my month off and respect that, but sure as hell i'm coming back. can't keep those dudes down, and i get that.

we make too big a deal of what should be a good thing. whoever was last banned should personally thank each of the 51.

"it doesn't happen that often" is a terrible justification for any policy

if its for low level irritation then we need an offset button where we can vote up posts of value.

String Yr BLOBs (bnw), Saturday, 6 November 2010 18:24 (fifteen years ago)

that works well on youtube, anyway

Adrian Roosevelt "Adie" Mike (nakhchivan), Saturday, 6 November 2010 18:26 (fifteen years ago)

i think what it comes down to is the spitballin smokin in the boys room motherfuckers in the back of the room don't like the idea that the rest of their classmates can have them kicked out for being disruptive

'u r taking my right to be disruptive'

of course this idea presupposes that we're all here 'for' something, that there's a something to be disrupted, when a lot of people are just here to bullshit and be internet loudmouths and have fun. i am one of these.

we're here for different reasons i guess and we'll never see sb the same way imo

Unfrozen Caveman Board-Lawyer (WmC), Saturday, 6 November 2010 19:35 (fifteen years ago)

hey, here's a thought: every so often i get particularly annoyed by _______'s--usually one of the same half-dozen or so posters, iirc--acting like an asshole and punch SB. and, somehow, i imagine they likewise do the same when fed up with my more asinine behavior here. end result: we end up with somewhat less than a dozen SBs at any given 6 month time period, i'd imagine. big fucking deal. life goes on.

hey look at me i'm a drunken asshole, how 'bout that huh? (Ioannis), Saturday, 6 November 2010 21:19 (fifteen years ago)

not sure there's been a single 'comedy' sb yet, unless ppl were sbannin lj for the lols one of the times.

i think i may have hit it four times? maybe a couple more that i've forgotten durnk.

mookieproof, Sunday, 7 November 2010 00:22 (fifteen years ago)

how baout just having an ignore list? has it been discussed? seems like a less obtrusive way for ppl who get annoyed by certain posters to not have to deal w/em

check it out at the bottom of the 'boards' page. seems like a lot of hassle imo.
