i like this:
Distancing remains difficult, though, as N.F.L. drug testers report to the Williams home three times each week. His children are friendly with the tester and look forward to his visits.
he just sounds like a hippieish, nice dude. the part about helping a stewardess wash dishes was pretty cool.

Just seems like he went the wrong way careerwise and it's fucked up his life in the weirdest way.
― PLEASE SIT TIGHT WHILE WE MAKE NEW ARRANGEMENTS (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 22 July 2009 17:35 (fourteen years ago) link
See, I read it a little differently. He was always a weird dude. Depressive. Introspective. Over-open. Never figured out how to feed the press clichés to keep them from getting a taste for blood.
His life was always weird for a major-sport star (vis. helping with the dishes), and it's fucked up his career in the weirdest way. He doesn't quite fit in with the pack, and it makes him a bit of a target. Esp. for doughy sports-beat reporters who like to wring their hands over teh weedz.
Like I said a few years back, if a guy's going to carry the ball 35 times every Sunday, I have exactly zero business giving a shit whether he prefers a J to a cocktail every now and then.

Best analog I can think of would be Brian Williams/Bison Dele (RIP).

yeah, same kinda dude f'sho.Honestly, I'm all about this guy getting to blow trees all day. But if you make a contract with people who are paying you literally millions and millions of dollars, you should be aware of the few things you shouldn't do to jeopardize that... or else steer clear of that career.
― PLEASE SIT TIGHT WHILE WE MAKE NEW ARRANGEMENTS (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 22 July 2009 19:11 (fourteen years ago) link
Totally not arguing with that part ;-)
As a pragmatic business/career matter it's pretty self-sabotaging... just I can see why the self-sabotage, esp. at the time what with fucking Wannstedt actually honest to god trying to, like, kill you in a losing effort week in and week out...
Especially when, and this was also a Brian Williams thing, you're sort of a smart guy and have been encouraged by the same docs that supply your depression meds to actually achieve some perspective and since you're sort of a smart guy you actually can do this, achieve some perspective, and so you sort of do perceive the game as Part Of This Complete Life, as opposed to the singleminded, all-encompassing ontological absolute it has to be if you're going to maintain anything resembling your competitive edge. Vis it's the game rewards smarts but not introspection.
Anyhoo if there had been a great national "Really, Ricky?" over his occasional blazing vs the the great national "OMGz0r REEFERZ TEH CHILSDRENS!!!" I'd be a lot more mellow about the whole thing.
Still love him forever, like I love NFL.

Maybe the best thing is that he seems to be setting realistic and wholesome goals in his own life: two more years as backup and then a life as in holistic medicine sounds much better than kung fu wandering weed icon or shrinking violet sportstar.
I'd love for him to have an inexplicable breakout season.

the comparison made to LT makes sense to me, cuz they both have a certain wounded quality to them. LT strikes me as a guy who'd love to just play golf and live in anonymity for the rest of his life - he doesn't want to be LT anymore, just lawrence.
ricky getting teams to buy into that holistic shit is probably a long shot, but getting players into it shouldnt be hard - athletes will try pretty much anything

Ricky definitely has not lost his burst, which with many great 32 year old backs that is long gone.

the only issue with Williams was that Dave Wannstedt tried to kill him and the NFL can't handle a little weed

Always loved his running style, hope to see him break out again. Thinking about Ricky always makes me think of Cecil the Diesel. He coulda been great if he wasn't such a fuckup.
He admits he broke into the home of a married woman that he knew from the gym, but said he only wanted to watch her sleep.
