b. Elvis Grbac is doing everything in his power to get run out of Baltimore on a rail. He is nothing like he was a year ago in his 4,169-yard Kansas City season.

e. Any questions about the new Kordell Stewart? He's so good, so proficient, such a leader, that I'm actually thinking of voting him Comeback Player of the Year over Garrison Hearst.

6. I think I might be a charter member of the Mike McMahon Fan Club. I know he makes one mistake for every positive play, but is there a young quarterback other than Vick or Brees with the upside of this dynamo?

10. I think the Houston Texans would be wise to do their homework on disappointing Jets backup quarterback Chad Pennington right now. Which they're doing.

4. Oakland (10-3). I hear they'll fight Jon Gruden, even after the season, if he tries to take the Notre Dame job.

hahaha wow @ this one (from 9/20/1999 column)

7. I think referee Ed Hochuli saved himself a ton of woe by not overturning a Tennessee touchdown pass Sunday, an incredible 14-yard catch by Yancey Thigpen from Neil O'Donnell. If he'd done the same thing in Tampa last week -- instead of overturning a Karl Williams reception he had no business overturning because there wasn't indisputable evidence to kill it -- the replay would be in great shape after two weeks.

9. I think the most improved position group in the NFL in 1999 is the Dolphin running-back bunch.

6. I think the best future scenario for Troy Aikman is this: Get cut by Dallas on June 2. Sign with Tampa Bay on June 3. Spend three months learning the offense and the receivers. Start the opener. Teach Shaun King a thing or two. And last as long as you can, until you get the next killer hit. Retire. A former Dallas assistant told me last week: "No question that's the best thing for Troy, even better than going with Norv Turner to San Diego." Now the question is: Will Jerry Jones let it happen?

Teach Shaun King a thing or two.

"No, Shaun, no, THIS is how you hand off the ball."

LOL @ Mike McMahon

Like, making one mistake for every positive play should NOT be a way to get Peter King's love.

That reminds me what a really weird time 2001 was for football.

Right around the time they were boasting how pocket passers were a thing of the past, Michael Vick was the QB of the future, and that mobile running QBs were going to be taking over the league.

So what happens? Vick's in jail, Donovan is more of a pocket passer now, McNair became more of a pocket passer, and everybody learns that being a good pocket passer beats being a guy that can rush for 1,000 yards as a QB.

Shaun King failed in Arena Football too...FYI. As did Adrian MacPherson

So what happens? Vick's in jail, Donovan gets hurt and gets older, McNair got hurt and got older, and everybody learns that older injuried athletes, as good as they might've once been, can't run loosey goosey around the field like they once did.

McNair had a lot of pep left in his tank when he settled in to become more of a pocket passer--he was forced into that due to the degradation of Eddie George's running ability in 2001.

McNabb isn't exactly old, either. He became more of a pocket passer a few years ago. Sure, injuries play into it somewhat, but he had his best success as a pocket passer. His numbers were merely 'good' when he was taking own downfield (and yes, true, he didn't have anybody to throw to, but who does he have now?)

Who else in the league is playing that style of football right now, other than maybe David Gerard?

Vince Young when he's on the field. Rodgers wants to but is beginning to find out why he cant.

I think there's a good chance Owens will be on much better behavior with a quarterback he respects and considers a good friend in McNabb. And McNabb is the king of his locker room, the way Derek Jeter lords over the Yankees' clubhouse. McNabb will be able to keep Owens in line if he strays.

Probably.

6. On a given day the Saints can be the best team in football. They have the best defensive line depth in the NFC, a great back and a quarterback who plays some great games. If Aaron Brooks screws his head on right, and they stop making the dumb turnovers and penalties (which have been a staple of this team in recent years), they're my darkhorse Super Bowl team. But those are very big ifs. Which is why I'm not even picking them to make the playoffs. I think they'll be 9-7, maybe 10-6.

7. Bad year for New Jersey football and Bay Area football. Jets, Giants, Niners, Raiders ... no more than one of them will be over .500.

8. MVP: Jake Plummer.
