I can't believe the rule used to be you could drop kick it from beyond the line of scrimmage. What madness the old game of football was.

I spent like an hour watching hall of famers talking about their careers, and acting like Otto Graham or whoever was the best thing ever. Then they show clips of the dude and he's running around like he's carrying bags of cement and throwing a wobbly, slow spiral to some elephant. Yeah, I'm sure Brian Urlacher couldn't knock that dude's dentures out. Right.

Flutie got a whole lot out of what he had, criminy the guy played college football in the mid 80s. He is a prime example in that QB thread about some players not finding their place on a team. The guy was a decent QB at a point and probably could have put up a few more productive seasons as a starter if he would have landed in the right situation earlier in his career.

If you would have told me in 1986 right after the defending World Champion Chicago Bears lost in the playoffs with Flutie at QB that the guy would still be playing twenty years later, I would have said you were crazy. Freaking Alonzo Carreker killed the Bears chance for a repeat by cheap shot injuring Jim McMahon, then Fuller and Tomczak both got hurt and Flutie got the nod. Like any QB with no experience in the playoffs, he didn't do so hot. Still in hindsight, Flutie may have been a better option than most of the bozos that played QB for the Bears in the interim years.

I saw the catch happen on TV when it happened. It was pretty amazing and it one of those few overblown plays along with the Cal/Stanford band kickoff return that I never get tired of seeing.

Flutie Flakes is the name of a breakfast cereal named for then Buffalo Bills starting quarterback Doug Flutie in 1998, after Flutie's popularity soared because of his scrambling, last quarter heroics and his impressive win-loss record. A large portion of the profits made from sales of Flutie Flakes were donated to the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism, created in honor of Flutie's autistic son. The goal of the foundation is to create awareness of autism and to seek a cure.

Flutie Flakes became the subject of a minor controversy in January 2000 when after a controversial playoff win over Buffalo, Miami Dolphins' head coach Jimmy Johnson poured Flutie Flakes on the ground and invited his team to stomp on them. Flutie was upset that Johnson would use the product that Doug created to help victims of autism in such a manner. Johnson issued a public apology.

Flutie Flakes remained popular in the region even after Flutie was benched for Rob Johnson. After Flutie signed with the San Diego Chargers in 2001, the red, white, and blue boxes were replaced with a black, yellow, and white design.

A box of Flutie Flakes is visible on top of the fridge in the Barones' kitchen in the CBS sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond (1996-2005).

Flutie Flakes is also a common derisive term used in reference to Flutie fans who display an extreme fanaticism and irrationality when it comes to their beloved hero.

Flutie Fruities are a brand of fruit snacks developed during Doug Flutie's 2001 season with the San Diego Chargers. Much like the beloved breakfast cereal Flutie Flakes, Flutie Fruities was a product created to appeal to fans of his football career, and a large portion of the proceeds went toward the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism.

This is incredible in so many ways.

I remember seeing an interview with Jimmy Johnson mentioning that he went to high school with Janis Joplin and he called her something like "Burnt Weeds" because of her red hair.

Hard to believe, him being a ex-football coach and all, but I think Jimmy Johnson might be a bit of an asshole.

Retirement Plan for Flutie

A Knight to Remember, Doug Digs Baseball Now
(Could the Sox Use a Guy Like Flutie?)

Days after his retirement from the NFL, Doug Flutie scored the first run of the game for the Natick Knights in the Boston Men's Baseball League as they defeated the Somerville Senators 4-1 at Trum Field last night.

In that at bat, Doug walked and later scored. He played 2nd base all game and even made a nice diving catch in middle innings.

(maybe this shd go in ilbb)
