If you would have told me in 1986 right after the defending World Champion Chicago Bears lost in the playoffs with Flutie at QB that the guy would still be playing twenty years later, I would have said you were crazy. Freaking Alonzo Carreker killed the Bears chance for a repeat by cheap shot injuring Jim McMahon, then Fuller and Tomczak both got hurt and Flutie got the nod. Like any QB with no experience in the playoffs, he didn't do so hot. Still in hindsight, Flutie may have been a better option than most of the bozos that played QB for the Bears in the interim years.
I saw the catch happen on TV when it happened. It was pretty amazing and it one of those few overblown plays along with the Cal/Stanford band kickoff return that I never get tired of seeing.

Flutie Flakes became the subject of a minor controversy in January 2000 when after a controversial playoff win over Buffalo, Miami Dolphins' head coach Jimmy Johnson poured Flutie Flakes on the ground and invited his team to stomp on them. Flutie was upset that Johnson would use the product that Doug created to help victims of autism in such a manner. Johnson issued a public apology.
Flutie Flakes remained popular in the region even after Flutie was benched for Rob Johnson. After Flutie signed with the San Diego Chargers in 2001, the red, white, and blue boxes were replaced with a black, yellow, and white design.
A box of Flutie Flakes is visible on top of the fridge in the Barones' kitchen in the CBS sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond (1996-2005).
Flutie Flakes is also a common derisive term used in reference to Flutie fans who display an extreme fanaticism and irrationality when it comes to their beloved hero.

"ramblin scramblin man". it makes so much sense to me now why he quoted skynard at his press conference.

Hard to believe, him being a ex-football coach and all, but I think Jimmy Johnson might be a bit of an asshole.

Retirement Plan for Flutie
A Knight to Remember, Doug Digs Baseball Now(Could the Sox Use a Guy Like Flutie?)
Days after his retirement from the NFL, Doug Flutie scored the first run of the game for the Natick Knights in the Boston Men's Baseball League as they defeated the Somerville Senators 4-1 at Trum Field last night.
In that at bat, Doug walked and later scored. He played 2nd base all game and even made a nice diving catch in middle innings.
(maybe this shd go in ilbb)
