This looks to be a pretty interesting playoffs, probably the first open run in a good long time.

I kinda feel like one of the big D teams like B-more or Chicago could get to the Superbowl.

earlnash, Saturday, 5 January 2019 16:09 (five years ago) link

colts / hawks / ravens / bears

p nice slate of wild card games, feel like these could be good playoffs in general.

in the afc, i have a hunch the winner of chargers/ravens beats whichever of the pats/chiefs they meet in the div and then loses to the other in the conf game. nfc i think it will be bears @ saints, rams back home 0/1.

Roberto Spiralli, Saturday, 5 January 2019 16:52 (five years ago) link

Seems like nearly all the money is on the Colts today. Have they looked particularly good or are the Texans just that unconvincing?

frogbs, Saturday, 5 January 2019 17:38 (five years ago) link

colts 9-1 over last 10 and look like things are clicking. houston theoretically have a good defense but overall they look nothing like a team that might win a postseason game. i think BOB is prob just a bad hc

Roberto Spiralli, Saturday, 5 January 2019 18:04 (five years ago) link

is there, in any sport, a division more boring than the afc south

mookieproof, Saturday, 5 January 2019 18:44 (five years ago) link

I’d argue the AFC east is more boring

frogbs, Saturday, 5 January 2019 19:17 (five years ago) link

AFC South has more years where two teams make the playoffs than the AFC East. I'd say the Colts are the only team in the South that has much if any fanbase outside the locals.

earlnash, Saturday, 5 January 2019 20:08 (five years ago) link

i can hate the pats and laugh at the jets; i just don't care about any of the afc south teams, let alone two of them playing each other

maybe if houston reclaimed the oilers name they could graft on some character

mookieproof, Saturday, 5 January 2019 20:10 (five years ago) link

texans officially unconvincing

Roberto Spiralli, Saturday, 5 January 2019 22:13 (five years ago) link

is the colts offensive line that good? or is TX just overrated. i think this is the first colts game i've seen all season

Дарья (daria-g), Saturday, 5 January 2019 22:50 (five years ago) link

The thing I have read on the Colts is that their young O-line and D-line are for real. Bob Kravitz of Indy Star seems pretty impressed and he was a bit of local critic of some things Indy did back in the Manning days.

earlnash, Sunday, 6 January 2019 00:41 (five years ago) link

ahaha i know him - bob kravitz did deflategate

it doesn't seem impossible for them to beat kansas city

Дарья (daria-g), Sunday, 6 January 2019 01:14 (five years ago) link

ok i *really* question attempting to kick that. guys

Дарья (daria-g), Sunday, 6 January 2019 02:27 (five years ago) link

Sebastian Janikowski is so very glad they are not wearing the lime green unis tonight. It is not a flattering look for him.

earlnash, Sunday, 6 January 2019 02:35 (five years ago) link

I'm also not sure that Jerry Jones is keeping around Jason Garrett in some type of Dorian Gray spell. That might explain a few things.

earlnash, Sunday, 6 January 2019 02:37 (five years ago) link

man the Chargers and Ravens both fuckin suck

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 6 January 2019 21:04 (five years ago) link

chargers could have downed crabtree short of the 1st down line if they hadnt been complaining lol

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 6 January 2019 21:22 (five years ago) link

I'm not being hyperbolic when i say there's still no single individual in Los Angeles who knows the Chargers aren't in San Diego anymore, let alone anyone who knows they won a playoff game today.

omar little, Sunday, 6 January 2019 21:32 (five years ago) link

I watched some of the Seahawks/Cowboys yesterday after ignoring most of the season and that was some dull, dispiriting football. Thankfully I missed seeing the horrifying ankle injury live.

k3vin k., Sunday, 6 January 2019 23:08 (five years ago) link

whistles are meaningless; every single play should end with one team or the other running the ball into the end zone because maybe they’ll overturn the tackle

realizing boston sports radio will STILL be complaining that the game sucked

Дарья (daria-g), Monday, 4 February 2019 05:41 (five years ago) link

I thought Gurley's knee was iffy.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Monday, 4 February 2019 06:10 (five years ago) link

what happened with gurley was probably just that they ran him 1,000,000 times in the regular season. ppl speculated about an injury but then it was pointed out that he played a great game vs NO pass blocking, throwing himself in front of dudes in a way he wouldn't have if he was actually injured.

6 points given up to kansas city and the rams over 6 quarters of conf champ/super bowl has to be one of the most impressive accomplishments in the belichick era, especially since the line we were being fed was that these guys are the new wave taking over. bill is probably always insufferable but seems like this would be an especially good time to avoid him for a year or two. meanwhile chiefs' 2nd half performance really just shows how good they were, and how much more they actually had going on than the rams.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 4 February 2019 12:24 (five years ago) link

tbf the Rams offense looked pretty awful - Goff looked really overmatched. I've seen him like that before but it never lasted the whole game! Kinda neat though how the Pats defense has been this huge wildcard during this entire run; they'll go from like 3rd to 29th in the league during consecutive SB runs

Still, think the big takeaway from this game was "this would've been so much better if the Saints hadn't gotten screwed and/or the Chiefs won the OT coin toss"

frogbs, Monday, 4 February 2019 13:15 (five years ago) link

the grim corporate competency, utter joylessness of this MAGA franchise is truly the dynasty America deserves

that was one of the least entertaining sporting events I've ever seen

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 4 February 2019 13:15 (five years ago) link

ppl probably don't remember that 15 years ago the pats played defense like that on a regular basis. complete old-school gameplan annihilation by bill and co.

call all destroyer, Monday, 4 February 2019 13:19 (five years ago) link

i guess the difference is the players he had to work with. pats will presumably not pay the huge money required to keep flowers this offseason and that alone will probably be enough to scuttle this defense.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 4 February 2019 13:28 (five years ago) link

geez pessimistic much?

call all destroyer, Monday, 4 February 2019 13:32 (five years ago) link

that Brady-Kraft magakiss was...something.

by the light of the burning Citroën, Monday, 4 February 2019 13:43 (five years ago) link

still can't get over the Rams *finally* amassing a 9-yard run (backed up against their own end zone, where they needed it most), then immediately getting smacked with a delay of game and fumbling on the next play

frogbs, Monday, 4 February 2019 14:24 (five years ago) link

can I also say the commercials were all pretty bad and seemed to all rely on the "can you believe how much fuckin' money we spent on this ad? make it go viral, please!!!" factor

though the NFL hall of fame commercial was pretty entertaining

frogbs, Monday, 4 February 2019 14:48 (five years ago) link

The Bud Light/Game of Thrones crossover was pretty wtf, and not in a good way.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Monday, 4 February 2019 16:04 (five years ago) link

the main theme i sensed in the commercials was "look at all these robots who are sad they can't be human"

I liked that the Game of Thrones / Bud Light one had absolutely no twist at the end. The goofy Bud Light characters just get murdered and that's it.

xp

Only because I expected some light hearted shift at the end. As one would, given the way food brands insist on associating strictly with safe, good vibes.

Larry Elleison (rogermexico.), Monday, 4 February 2019 17:07 (five years ago) link

to me the car commercials were the worst, "here's an inspiring story about triumphing over adversity, much like Audi did when we fit 450 horsepower in a mid-size sedan..."

frogbs, Monday, 4 February 2019 17:49 (five years ago) link

i'd be curious about the ratings for this game, on one hand you've got this very popular dynastic team that at the same time everyone is sick of, on the other hand you have the default most popular football team in a massive metropolis that is only mildly aware of (and deeply disinterested in) the two local teams.
