Oh yeah I remember that one…not old enough to remember it occurring but it’s regarded as one of the most horrible wrecks in auto racing (along w/Russell Phillips.) Not that auto racing is lacking plenty of competition for horrible wrecks.

god, imagine if that was Nickelodeon's Game of the Week

frogbs, Thursday, 5 January 2023 03:42 (three years ago)

because of the word "gory" i assume (perhaps wrongly) OEO is talking about Clint Malarchuk, the hockey goalie who took a skate blade to the neck, slicing through his carotid artery and nicking his jugular vein. i remember that one well, but didn't know this detail from Wikipedia:

The excessive amount of blood that Malarchuk lost caused eleven fans to faint, two more to have heart attacks, and three players to vomit on the ice.

!!

alpine static, Thursday, 5 January 2023 23:45 (three years ago)

the clint malarchuk thing was insane. only thing even close that i can recall was when mark howe (son of gordie, hall of famer in his own right) was literally impaled on a goal's metal rod

Worst Injury: "I was playing in Hartford and I got skewered on the net. Yeah, so if you look at it in hindsight, I am very fortunate I'm still able to walk. The center point of the net pierced my rectal area and went in about five to five-and-a-half inches and actually had cut out on the other side. So I actually kind of had a hole almost all the way through my body. I lost five pints of blood and was pretty well in bed for four weeks because I ended up with a really bad infection. So I guess I've had other injuries that were probably more painful, but this one here because I lost so much blood. Shock set in. Some of the pain goes away, but it was very, very fearful. I remember laying on the ice and I knew kind of what had happened. And my instincts were, I thought I was going to die. I remember looking up and Nicky Fotiu was looking over me as my teammate. I mean, just the look in his eyes scared the hell out of me."

mookieproof, Friday, 6 January 2023 00:49 (three years ago)

Yeah alpine static it was malarchuk. I didn’t know any of that wiki stuff either, but I remember there still being blood all in the crease while the backup goalie came out and played out the rest of the game, which was v disturbing

sounds like hamlin is recovering really well! tube removed and talking, facetimed his team etc etc.

im a beacon of light (Spottie), Friday, 6 January 2023 21:05 (three years ago)

that's amazing. I read somewhere that events like this have a survival rate of like 0.2%, I guess if anyone was gonna pull through it would be a professional athlete who got immediate medical care

. . . for the jazz

mookieproof, Sunday, 8 January 2023 21:23 (three years ago)

It was hilarious to me that the Patriots, Dolphins, and Steelers were tied at one point, cos NFL.com deemed it unnecessary to include ties in their playoff scenarios

paranormal bully romance (Neanderthal), Sunday, 8 January 2023 21:25 (three years ago)

if washington wins (seems likely), and seattle ties (which they are with under a minute in regulation), and green bay/detroit tie tonight . . . they'd all end up at 8-8-1 and the lions would make the 'offs

looks like seattle is gonna get into fg range tho

Green Bay’s Quay Walker ejected for the second time this season for pushing an opposing team’s staff member!!

omar little, Monday, 9 January 2023 03:57 (three years ago)

#Packers first-round rookie LB Quay Walker has been ejected for shoving a member of the #Lions training staff.

omar little, Monday, 9 January 2023 04:02 (three years ago)

i guess being a first-round pick is enough to insulate him from this because honestly how dumb can you be

call all destroyer, Monday, 9 January 2023 04:06 (three years ago)

I mean that might have cost them the playoffs

omar little, Monday, 9 January 2023 04:07 (three years ago)

lions dude just caught a pass for a first down with his thighs, this is fate

call all destroyer, Monday, 9 January 2023 04:11 (three years ago)

Disastrous ending for the pack. Maybe that first round thing will protect Walker but that play was absolutely one of the worst I’ve seen.

omar little, Monday, 9 January 2023 04:23 (three years ago)

oh it's awful and i would have no use for the guy but he played at georgia and was apparently good so i guess we'll see.

anyway peace out aaron rodgers, that's a silver lining

call all destroyer, Monday, 9 January 2023 04:29 (three years ago)

I had a feeling this game was gonna get weird but yeah that was not fun

Lovie Smith fired as Texans' coach after just one season

what an absolutely garbage organization. god bless him for going for two, and making it, and making houston's draft pick slide to second for using him as cover for their racism

firing a coach who inherited a team that was severely devoid of talent at just about every position for not turning the ship completely around in a year, fucking dumpster fire organization.

fentanyl young (Neanderthal), Monday, 9 January 2023 16:09 (three years ago)

Like I said before it did seem like the Texans would fight to the end in a lot of those games I suspect because they were reasonably well coached despite being devoid of talent. Honestly lovie got so much out of mediocre Bears teams, he deserves a shot with someone else ASAP.

omar little, Monday, 9 January 2023 16:19 (three years ago)

still in disbelief at the Quay Walker thing, all I can think is maybe he was seeing red and thought it was one of the Lions players who (lightly) shoved him, fucking wild that might have actually cost his team a playoff spot

that said this Packers team was no fun at all and I'm kinda relieved I don't have to watch them get the shit kicked out of them by the 49ers again. there's a chance that Rodgers just had a bad season due to injuries & a young receiver core which (lets face it) did him no favors but it's much more likely that he's just washed. I don't have much hope for Jordan Love but his contract is up next year and it would be really irritating if Rodgers came back and we never got to see if he was any good or not. either way pretty pathetic ending for the guy who's probably gonna go down in history as "the best regular season quarterback of all time"

frogbs, Monday, 9 January 2023 16:21 (three years ago)

I gotta say, it was pretty nice to see the Lions pull that out. They might be a team to watch next year. (I say this as someone originally from Detroit who has heard that refrain over five decades.)

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Monday, 9 January 2023 16:35 (three years ago)

yeah them and the Jags seem like teams to watch next year. what made them so fun to watch is they approached every game with a "fuck it" sort of mentality and so they did all sorts of crazy things in critical spots, including late in the 4th during last night's game. I wonder how much conservative they're gonna get next year now that they appear to be pretty legit. either way they seem to be set up pretty well, they still have one more 1st rounder from the Stafford trade and since the Rams did so poorly it'll be a good pick. wonder what they're gonna do at QB.

frogbs, Monday, 9 January 2023 18:09 (three years ago)

I love watching the Jags, but they did their best to lose Saturday night's game.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Monday, 9 January 2023 18:12 (three years ago)

lions do feel different this time. the best players on their defense are all rookies, so they're bound to improve next year. offense has lots of young playmakers too, with a great line. i think the biggest impediment will be goff, and whether he can elevate his game enough on the road and in bad weather. he did play well in the second half last night.

sault bae (voodoo chili), Monday, 9 January 2023 18:13 (three years ago)

jags, i think, have an opposite situation - lawrence is gonna be great but the playmakers/o-line are just ok, which could limit the offensive ceiling. lots of money tied up in engram and kirk, who are fine but not special.

sault bae (voodoo chili), Monday, 9 January 2023 18:15 (three years ago)

Amon Ra St. Brown is great

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 9 January 2023 18:18 (three years ago)

Lions showed exponential growth throughout the season, like when Miami played them, they had a shit record, moved the ball very well, but couldn't defend for shit.

But they went on a hell of a run to end the year and the defense improved. Could be a preview of even better things to come

fentanyl young (Neanderthal), Monday, 9 January 2023 18:18 (three years ago)

Was thinking: has any athlete ever damaged their public image/popularity more than Aaron Rodgers without really doing anything substantially terrible?

I'm thinking of Ray Rice, Vick, incidents like that. Rodgers just started acting like the world's biggest douche but it's not like he killed anyone.

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 9 January 2023 18:21 (three years ago)

Like you can tell even State Farm is phasing him out with Mahomes and the jazz bath guy

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 9 January 2023 18:21 (three years ago)

He's always been basically unlikeable. I've known a couple of his teammates and the best they can manage is to say nothing bad.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Monday, 9 January 2023 18:25 (three years ago)

Rodgers did a lot of work to stage manage his persona, doing all those annoying Discount Double Check commercials that made him look like a corny goofball, and avoiding stepping in it in the press, so people kinda ignored the weirdness of his sudden estrangement from his family.

Lying about being immunized and becoming nu-Rogan, while his play on the field degraded just about eroded that goodwill and had people suspecting the family estrangement was due to his own pettiness.

fentanyl young (Neanderthal), Monday, 9 January 2023 18:39 (three years ago)

he was so consistently great that it was kinda hard to talk any smack about him, and I think up until Covid he did a really good job of just keeping his mouth shut when it came to the media. but yeah there were a lot of signs there. when his brother wound up on The Bachelorette (and won!) there was this weird situation because it came out that he just straight up wouldn't talk to his family anymore but couldn't provide a good reason why. after Greg Jennings left for Minnesota he didn't hold back calling the guy an asshole. then there was that big expose after McCarthy got canned which made him seem like a total diva who held onto grudges forever. Rodgers would get asked about this stuff a lot and it was pretty clear by his cagey and defensive responses that he was almost certainly the guy to blame.

for me I kinda thought something was up in like...2012. back then he used to do that "championship belt" celebration that Fred-Ex used to do on the Eagles but then he suddenly stopped. apparently it was because someone from another team picked him off and did the belt to mock him and I guess that pissed him off so much that he stopped doing it altogether. to me that sorta cemented him as one of those guys who liked to talk shit but couldn't take it in return.

frogbs, Monday, 9 January 2023 18:50 (three years ago)

yeah his play was otherworldly, which had something to do with it. during his Super Bowl win, we temporarily changed the board description to "gay for Aaron Rodgers" lol

fentanyl young (Neanderthal), Monday, 9 January 2023 18:56 (three years ago)

I think we’ve grown so used to more demonstratively weird, awkward, shitty NFL guys (many of them QBs) that Rodgers being quietly all three was easy to overlook.

omar little, Monday, 9 January 2023 18:59 (three years ago)

yeah, so many NFL players are pieces of shit so it's almost like you have to be a standout among assholes to earn people's ire.

fentanyl young (Neanderthal), Monday, 9 January 2023 19:13 (three years ago)

one thing with Rodgers is it actually did affect his play, for example last year's playoff game vs. the 49ers where Lewis fumbled and Rodgers basically threw to no one besides Davante Adams & Aaron Jones the rest of the game (while Lazard and Lewis were so wide open they were practically doing cartwheels). the SI article about him said he would do exactly this, which is funny cuz Rodgers basically denied the entire thing as a completely fabricated hit piece
