Jags are a pleasant surprise.

I also think the degradation of defensive units don't help. Teams accepted that they no longer need dominant defenses to win Super Bowls, so they've allowed holes in some areas of the unit so that they can strengthen their offense.
Even the best units don't completely obliterate teams like the 2000 Ravens or the 2002 Bucs, due to all of the offense-happy rule enforcement shifts.
Mediocre defenses, you often can't trust to close out close games late.
The point differential thing w the Vikings and others is truly bizarre, really illustrates the volatility of some teams' performance.
― Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Friday, 30 December 2022 18:07 (three years ago)
One thing I will say is the Vikings have certainly had luck but have also made an incredible number of incredibly clutch plays in crucial moments and are also riding Justin Jefferson who is putting on a historic run right now so it's not like they just slipped and fell and ended up 12-3
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 30 December 2022 18:15 (three years ago)
Also in interviews they just think they can win now no matter what, that sort of irrational self belief is important in sports
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 30 December 2022 18:16 (three years ago)
whereas my team makes the least sense, a largely unchanged defensive unit that added Bradley Chubb is now terrible, Xavien Howard is also bad and somehow inexplicably made the Pro Bowl, which even he himself questioned, we have a QB that's only been sacked 21 times this year, but has suffered a head injury on 3 of those sacks (14% of them!), and we've had both a three game AND a four game losing streak this year and are still possibly going to make the playoffs.
plus two receivers over 1,000 yards, and yet the offense has been stalled for a month.

I guess the Fish Fade is back! :)
― Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Friday, 30 December 2022 18:35 (three years ago)
Jaguars run is one of those you often see when a bunch of young talent is finally starting to click, and your young QB is starting to play at the level you expected when you drafted him. they might be scary next year

well yeah, they're arguably one of the most clutch teams in NFL history. there are obviously a lot of decent arguments against using Pythag record as a true indicator of a team's skill and I think they pretty much all apply to the Vikings. on the other hand they do look pretty terrible for long stretches and I can see a team like the 49ers or Eagles whipping the tar outta them in the playoffs. you know like the Colts did
― frogbs, Friday, 30 December 2022 18:52 (three years ago)
i'm not worried about the vikings getting smoked by the eagles or niners -- no shame in that
i'm worried about them falling out of a bye position and then getting to host green bay two weeks from now. no matter how bad the packers are or how washed rodgers is, that's nightmare material
― mookieproof, Friday, 30 December 2022 19:10 (three years ago)
people assume Rodgers would show up in a big game like that but the truth is he really doesn't
― frogbs, Friday, 30 December 2022 19:39 (three years ago)
yes but there would be no pressure at all on him in such a situation and also the vikings are possibly cursed
― mookieproof, Friday, 30 December 2022 20:16 (three years ago)
Yeah they are totally playing with fire and agree they are not on the level of the Eagles or 49ers. They could get smoked by them easy, or pull another rabbit out of the hat, impossible to predict anything other than Jefferson is a problem
I'm completely at ease this season, the definition of playing with the house's money. I had them at 8/9 wins in preseason
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 30 December 2022 20:18 (three years ago)
Jags got a bit of a schedule benefit and while their defense is pretty middling, they have had some talent on that side of the ball for a couple of years. I think they hiring a decent coach did not hurt.
I think the Cowboys thought they were losing to Peterson and the Eagles with the Jags wearing all that green and black a couple weeks ago.
Raiders cutting bait on Derek Carr and sticking with McD probably won't look too smart in a few months. But hey, Carr deserves a chance to go 'somewhere' better than playing for the nutball Raiders, although it seems cruel for him to go to the Jets no matter their better roster.
― earlnash, Friday, 30 December 2022 23:10 (three years ago)
i'm worried about them falling out of a bye position and then getting to host green bay two weeks from now.
well there's only one bye spot anyway now, so
― Piven After Midnight (The Yellow Kid), Friday, 30 December 2022 23:18 (three years ago)
Jags were the perfect team to make a "boring" hire like Doug Peterson after everything that went down
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 30 December 2022 23:32 (three years ago)
my fact checkin cuz
(srsly tho, thank you for pointing this out. my sense of the nfl's structure is stuck at various stages of the past)
― mookieproof, Friday, 30 December 2022 23:49 (three years ago)
not a great first half for the philadelphia eagles
― mookieproof, Sunday, 1 January 2023 19:36 (three years ago)

There goes that Vikings positive point differential
― omar little, Sunday, 1 January 2023 23:59 (three years ago)
so ron rivera didn't know his team could be eliminated with a loss (which they were, when the packers later won). but that's okay, because he was so singularly focused on winning that he couldn't take 10 seconds to find out what it would require for his team to make the playoffs. so singularly focused on winning that he let carson wentz go 16-28 for 143 yards and 3 picks. so singularly focused that he has three winning seasons in his 12 as an NFL head coach. wait, the NFL has ties? never knew; i was too focused on winning
football guys: so focused on winning that it's a real challenge to get dressed in the morning
Not sure what the issue is. Only thing that matters is winning. Pretty safe to assume Ron Rivera was singularly focused on that, rather than what would happen if they lost. https://t.co/seR9pCXvbU— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) January 1, 2023

lmao
You need to sit down and learn how this stuff works lmao. The head coach job is to win every game…. It’s Not to be worried about “if this team beats that team then…” He don’t have time to gaf about all those scenarios. It’s called CONTROLLING WHAT YOU CAN CONTROL.— NephewOfTheKing👑 (@BuiltbyRoyalty) January 2, 2023

holy shit what just happened to Hamlin looked scary. he made a tackle, bounced back up, then suddenly fell over and is now apparently getting CPR? the ambulance is on the field. they showed Josh Allen and he was clearly crying. everyone on the sideline looking like they've seen a ghost
― frogbs, Tuesday, 3 January 2023 02:06 (three years ago)
holy shit, this is fucked. the broadcast just went dead silent for several minutes. they just cut to the MNF booth in the middle of the game. Buck and Aikman's voices are both quivering. I've seen a lot of horrific injuries in this sport but idk this seems different
― frogbs, Tuesday, 3 January 2023 02:12 (three years ago)
how can you ask these guys to keep playing
― frogbs, Tuesday, 3 January 2023 02:15 (three years ago)
Jesus Christ
Not gonna seek out the replay, but what occurred? Did he nail somebody with his head or does this look like a cardiac thing?
― omar little, Tuesday, 3 January 2023 02:17 (three years ago)
really think they should postpone the game. really hoping he is ok, but that's a touch beyond your typical injury.
― Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 3 January 2023 02:17 (three years ago)
and I don't think it's a given that he's ok.
the play didn't look that bad! he didn't get hit particularly hard. he just fell over. fuck. i've never seen anything like this.
― frogbs, Tuesday, 3 January 2023 02:19 (three years ago)
Jesus Christ. Really hope he’s ok. They need to call that game.
― omar little, Tuesday, 3 January 2023 02:20 (three years ago)
Yeah really didn’t look like anything much at all pretty standard tackle and fall, which makes it even more scary
― im a beacon of light (Spottie), Tuesday, 3 January 2023 02:21 (three years ago)
Game postponed/suspended wow
― im a beacon of light (Spottie), Tuesday, 3 January 2023 02:23 (three years ago)
has to be cardiac-related.
if Joe Buck is to be believed, he was clinically dead for almost ten minutes.
― Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 3 January 2023 02:24 (three years ago)
Sure seems that way…
― im a beacon of light (Spottie), Tuesday, 3 January 2023 02:25 (three years ago)
I’m told Damar Hamlin has a pulse, but is not breathing on his own. He is being transported to UC.Needed AED and CPR on the field.— Joe Danneman (@FOX19Joe) January 3, 2023

the commercials for the NFL they're currently airing "WHERE THE UNBELIEVABLE HAPPENS!" are so fucked up right now
― frogbs, Tuesday, 3 January 2023 02:31 (three years ago)
and now a "responsible play" commercial. Jesus
― frogbs, Tuesday, 3 January 2023 02:32 (three years ago)
hope it doesn't get lost that the official word from the NFL was "we'll give you 5 minutes to regroup". everyone just walked into the locker room right after.
― frogbs, Tuesday, 3 January 2023 02:34 (three years ago)
just the worst thing that i’ve ever seen ona. Football field, genuinely horrifying
the weirdest thing is that the hit didn’t seem particularly rough, just goes to show how extremely violent this sport is
― sault bae (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 3 January 2023 02:36 (three years ago)
my doctor friend thinks it might have been a cardiac arrhythmia

trying to keep finding news but having to avoid the social media cesspool is proving difficult. just going to wait for the next official news development.
― Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 3 January 2023 03:12 (three years ago)
coaches and players forced the nfl’s hand here
Per Joe Buck, once officials gave each team 5 minutes to warm up before resuming play, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor walked across the field and consulted Bills HC Sean McDermott. Both coaches then sent their teams to their respective locker rooms. Such a classy move by Taylor.— Paxton Boyd (@paxton) January 3, 2023
― sault bae (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 3 January 2023 03:22 (three years ago)
yup. NFL once again made a mess of it, but Bengals were a class act
― Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 3 January 2023 03:23 (three years ago)
seems good
