The Washington Redskins said Friday they were beginning a thorough review of the team’s controversial nickname, a stunning step that came as a number of the team’s largest corporate sponsors called for a change. The decision followed years in which the franchise refused to even consider such a move.

The team offered few details of what the review will entail, but two people familiar with discussions between team owner Daniel Snyder, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and other league officials that led to Friday’s announcement said the review is expected to result in a new team name and mascot.

“You know where this leads," one of the people said, speaking on condition of anonymity. “They’re working on that process [of changing the name]. It will end with a new name. Dan has been listening to different people over the last number of weeks.”

Asked whether a change was certain, the person said, “I don’t want to say 100 percent. It’s very likely headed in that direction.”

A second person with knowledge of the situation said: “It’s not a matter of if the name changes but when.”

it will be such an amazing surprise when the "review" determines that yes, it is in fact a racist team name that should have been changed many years ago

but the review will also find that the team holds no personal liability in the matter, having not been aware of the damage it caused until the review
