gronk had been hinting about it for a year and luck kept it quiet

also gronk's condition felt more dire and he seemed more 'used up', so there was not as much surprise.

major difference in timing. one was not long after after winning a title the other was right before the season started.

I think also a QB leaving is much more earthshaking wrt a franchise’s future plans.

I think the difference is pretty clear, Gronk is one of the best ever & has the rings to show for it, while Luck's career still feels incomplete...he won 4 playoff games, only making it as far as the AFCCG one time. also Gronk had injured so many different parts of his body that I think even some Pats fans were begging him to retire

it is freaky when you look at the film and it was a totally routine and legal hit and it fucked up his quad that badly

luck was totally injury prone too

i saw some stat that over his first three seasons he took 60 more hits than any other qb in that timeframe.

Probably didn't help that Luck was basically asking defenders to hit him harder.

So the Antonio Brown acquisition went from cool surprise to utter shitstorm rather quickly

idk depending on what corner of the media you were consuming it was always a shitstorm? like he conspired to get himself released b/c the patriots tampered and he knew he had a soft landing on a contender or whatever ideas were out there. there is definitely an element of local boston media that was extra sanctimonious about this before the civil suit news broke.

this is a depressing statement to make but these types of civil suits are so common nowadays and it's hard to know what to think of them.

I'd argue there's an order of magnitude difference in ugliness between NFL backroom dealings and rape accusations.
