I’m certainly no football expert but I have a tough time grasping the disconnect between the general perception of foles (as someone whose incompetence is somehow self-evident, even a joke) and his record as a generally solid quarterback and definitely above-average backup

his one good year is viewed as a product of the period where chip kelly's offense took everyone by surprise and he hasn't really done anything since to suggest he can play

so far this year he's at a crisp 5.3 yards/attempt which iirc puts him with the league's many checkdown artists

above-average backup is exactly what he is, lot of worse guys but you don't really want him playing playoff games for you.

i think you could say this if it were the world series or the stanley cup, but ppl are gonna watch or not watch either way. no one but you bastards wants to see the pats win again, but at least one team will have a shot at their first-ever owl, which is cool

i mean yeah the nfl would probably not prefer a jags/vikes tilt for ratings purposes, but other than them who the f cares?

i think they care they want to have marketable players and memorable games featuring popular teams, not three teams led by backup quality qbs and then the other one everyone hates

i mean the ratings are declining the nfl is no longer immune to the laws of nature

oh yeah sorry if i was unclear i know the nfl cares but ordinary ppl talking about what's best for ratings is always odd to me, market size usually doesn't play into my decision about what to watch

I'm naturally biased against the Vikings but last night was cool as hell - you could see the script forming, the Vikings lack of experience vs. the seasoned and well-traveled Saints, Drew Brees coming through again while the Vikings choke yet another playoff game that they easily should have won....and then everything flipping on one freak play
the fact that it happened at home made it even better, just an awesome moment all around

also love that Super Bowl 52 will be started by either Nick Foles or Case Keenum and potentially Blake Bortles as well

I'd love to see the Jags knock off the Pats by just running it down their throat and have Bortles break out with some early 70s pass line only throwing the ball say a dozen times.

Cutting the Pats time of possession down is about the best way to fight your real high powered pass offense. Jacksonville is going to need a bit of fortune and get a couple turn overs and not make mistakes.

Bortles foibles aside, the Jags and Vikings play a pretty old school type of football. It's not all that different than what Parcell's did when he was with the Giants right down to that big line man two TE setup that the Jags like to use. That is straight out of the ole' Giants playbook with Mark Bavaro and Zeke Mowatt. Gibbs in Washington liked to run that same setup with a single back. NE had a higher octane passing version of it playing on mis-matches with Gronk and Hernandez.

they asked him to hire an oc instead of doing it himself and he refused. if they are smart they are wondering why derrick henry only became the feature guy after murray got hurt but most likely they are wondering why they didn't get more return on the big payout for murray, and they are looking at the rams and chiefs and thinking - rightly or wrongly, idk - that they ought to be achieving more with mariota. there really isn't much about their offensive personnel to get excited about tho.

or i guess fire the guy they have as oc and find someone to really take over running the offense

they were a top 10 offense and scored 42 in a playoff game, idk if Haley was the dude to blame

eh they have a top tier qb and the best rb and wr in the league. that offense should be setting records, never mind top 10. there are other things too - a lot has been made of them having one of the lowest % of play action calls despite the threat of bell.

they have more fundamental problems but i certainly think letting haley walk was a good start. personally, i hate the way the roster is constructed with so much investment in a handful of stars. on the one hand you get an offense that can score those 42 points off of just a handful of big plays, but on the other hand you get a defense that is like heyward + tuitt + scrubs and it's a disaster. and that's even if the big names stay healthy.

haley seems to have a shelf life as far as anyone wanting to be around him goes.

sounds like roffles just doesn't like haley, and keeping him happy/unretired is obviously a priority

here is the key information i have accrued about vikes @ iggles

vikings have the best defense at stopping 3rd down conversions since the stat started to be tracked in 1991
nick foles has the worst 3rd down conversion % among starting qbs this year
(carson wentz had the best 3rd down rate earlier in the season)

vikings subpar o-line just about held together thru the regular season until they had to make adjustments after losing their LG at the end of december. now the wear is starting to show and it is bad, and looked real bad against the saints.
the strongest part of the eagles' roster is their elite and deep offensive line. the eagles forced the most 3 and outs, gave opposing qbs the shortest amount of time to throw, gave opposing teams the shortest total time of possession per game, and gave up the fewest rushing yards per game.

but...case keenum was either one of the best or the best qb vs pressure this season, depending on whose stats you use.

whatever happens it should be an electrifying shootout
