This offseason has been awesome.

Is Cutler making a mistake here? I can't tell whether he's grabbing a golden opportunity or fucking up his career.
― WmC, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 03:53 (seventeen years ago)
depends where he gets traded, if it's the bucs or the jets or the vikings i think it wouldn't be a huge deal. if he gets traded to the lions then yeah he's a retard

he's got a good thing with brandon marshall but it's not a connection that can't be replicated somewhere else i dont think

u might be right, i forgot about calvin
hey cankey i trust u on such things— i bet my friend $10 that the lions WOULDN'T pick stafford. am i gonna lose $10?

detroit allowed second-most sacks this year, has no defense and no offensive weapons beyond megatron. don't really see why jay should prefer going there to going to the jets, tb, san fran, cleveland, or chicago (the other 5 teams that are being reported as interested right now).
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 04:15 (seventeen years ago)
you should rly submit that question to armchair linebacker.

xp
kevin smith's ok, and i like detroit's coaching situation better than nyj's (tho rex ryan is a pimp). you wanna talk about a bad o-line and having no weapons, chicago's a lot worse off in that category, and it's unlikely that their defense is going to return to elite status any time soon. san fran? c'mon dude.
sarge tbqh i have no idea - i used to be pretty down on stafford but now i'm undecided on whether or not he's a franchise guy, blame lack of inside knowledge combined with paralysis by analysis i guess... he could be byron leftwich, or he could be jay cutler. i think i would probably take him if i was in detroit's position, and i also think it'd be kind of lame if they took a linebacker or lineman with that pick. but there's no track record for this front office/coaching staff, so it's tough to make any educated guesses... if i had to guess i'd say no, but who knows~

canks, i hear ya and i know we're talking about the moribund underbelly of the nfl (where everything generally sucks) but i still think you'd have to be really really sold on schwartz to consider the lions an "attractive" destination. don't know enough about the guy myself. i suppose if they can get cutler and keep the number 1 somehow to draft the LT of the future they might have something going.
ESPN AFC west bloggerguy with odds on cutler's landing spot

re cutler fucking up career-- if the team he goes to is fucked up enough (hi detroit), maybe. but really, the situation in denver is very unsettled. terrible d with almost 100% turnover, terrible special teams, newbie manager who is demanding certain hoodie-like prerogatives without earning them, an owner whose mostly hands off style bit him on the ass very hard over the past few years...
denver is basically an expansion team now.
it seems pretty clear that cutler was not gonna get an exension or better deal here after this went south. now he'll go somewhere and likely get a better deal contract wise. he got what he wanted. everything else flowing out of dove valley imo is bowlen & co hard-spinning a turd.
― iro with the brown bag (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 1 April 2009 12:17 (seventeen years ago)
I'm not sold on Mike Nolan as D Coordinator either. In my opinion the success of the Ravens defense starts with Ozzie Newsome, so I only give him a little bit of credit for the job he did there, and I think Nolan's stint with the 9ers has made into a bit of a punchline these days. Nobody on the 49ers respected him, as far as I can tell. Are guys going to want to run through a wall for him at this stage of his career? I'm not sure about that.
And then add the fact that he has no talent to work with and I just don't see that team improving much on D.

I really like Ross Tucker's idea of the Lions letting the clock run out on draft day:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/ross_tucker/04/01/lions-draft/index.html
I doubt they'd do this, but it would be ballsy.

i think the only thing keeping the broncos @ 9-7 or so instead of 5-11 was shanahan's skills on "o" (the lack of skills on the "d" side might be responsible for them being 9-7 instead of 11-5 but whatever.) i think cutler is a str8 up dbag but i think he's--i don't want to say "right--but the more sympathetic party in this case. bring in a NE assistant coach who wants to immediately replace you with a guy who may be a product of the NE system, a one-season wonder, etc. i think cassel is better than that, but if i'm cutler i'm thinking "fuck this new guy." i think cutler could go somewhere else and be a hero to one of these franchises, esp. the lions, jets, or bears (all of whom have had shitty qb situations for years.) and who the hell are the broncos going to plug in to the qb spot now?
― hello my name is peter francis geraci are you in debt (omar little), Wednesday, 1 April 2009 16:49 (seventeen years ago)
i dont know how much you wanna buy it, but i keep hearing the story as cutler was really pissed at the trade news, as hed been in the facility working w/ the team to learn the system etc. BUT, the bigger deal was that when he point blank asked jm, he straight up lied. and then he qualified denied.
who the hell are the broncos going to plug in to the qb spot now?
their o line is i think legitimately good, at least under shanny's system. that will make any qb look much better. and their rb situation could hardly get worse than last year. i mean, theyre gonna go from a good steak to hamburger helper, but apparently thats what jm wanted.

― hello my name is peter francis geraci are you in debt (omar little), Wednesday, 1 April 2009 17:11 (seventeen years ago)
unless he absolutely, positively, could not be convinced to work with someone to improve the defense, firing shanahan was just not a smart move.
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 17:11 (seventeen years ago)
i read that cutler's agent was trying to get him traded before mcdaniels even came in, something to do w/prev offensive coordinator leaving & them not wanting the guy who was brought in? same agent who worked w/brett favre to get him out of green bay in a quiet, drama free manner..
also, i miss football a lot ;_;

i think cutler and the o-coordinator are both represented by the same guy? still, maybe cutler was floating trade demands so they'd re-do his contract, but there's really no doubt that mcd fucked this up royally and probably is going to set them back at least two years. assuming they deal cutler for some sort of first rounder, they could conceivably end up with mark sanchez but other than that it's a weak ass qb class, also you have to remember that they spent picks on cutler and he turned out to be a 100% hit. drafting two good qbs in four years? what's the chance of that happening? soooo slim. this whole thing is such a mess.
