http://myespn.go.com/blogs/afceast/0-6-0/Why-would-Pats-turn-down-12th-pick-for-Cassel-.html
pats turned down 12th overall pick from Denver to send Cassel there/Cutler to Tampa Bay
wtf. don't know if BB wanted to send cassel to a team that was not going to be a threat anytime soon.. or didn't want to do a deal with mcdaniels.. or maybe was concerned the trade would fall through given that 3 teams were involved, thereby leaving NE with cassel and his $14 mil salary..
― итало электро брейк (daria-g), Sunday, 1 March 2009 17:47 (seventeen years ago)
ya, every aspect of this is so insane that i basically refuse to believe any of it, starting with the idea that mcdaniels would earnestly want to swap cutler for cassel - cutler is SO much better than cassel at everything the position requires, that it's basically impossible for me to wrap my head around this. nevermind the idea of belichick turning down superior compensation for cassel. the whole thing just sounds like bs to me, i find it a lot easier to envision that some teams called denver about cutler, denver listened and declined, and that turned into 'CUTLER ON THE TRADING BLOCK'

one of the more knowledgeable posters @ patsfans board suggested.. part of it might be pushback toward cutler/his agent over cutler wanting a new contract, i guess he is not paid too well by comparison to others in the league, also drama queen attitude. he is being kind of whiny now

Lions' Smith, Raiders' Cooper missingESPN.com news services
CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Detroit Lions defensive end Corey Smith and Oakland Raiders linebacker Marquis Cooper were among four boaters missing Sunday off Florida's Gulf Coast, the Coast Guard and their agents said.
Smith and Cooper were on a 21-foot vessel that left Clearwater Pass on Saturday morning for a fishing trip and did not return as expected, the Coast Guard said Sunday. Crews used a helicopter and a 47-foot motor-life boat to search a 750-square mile area west of Clearwater Pass on Sunday.
"We are in contact with the Coast guard and Corey's family has been informed," Smith's agent Ron Del Duca told ESPN.com's Bill Williamson. "Corey is one of the good guys out there. We're just waiting for more information and hoping for the best."
Troy Asmus, one of Cooper's agents, said he has been in contact with the NFL and that the league is aware of the situation.

― s1ocki kong country (cankles), Sunday, 1 March 2009 20:14 (seventeen years ago)
ok speculation from that board completely, but here goes: cutler wanted a new contract and somebody told tampa and detroit that he was available, which may well have been his own agent.
xpost I read that earlier.. terrible.. I read there was a 3rd player also on the boat (from Raiders?). the weather turns really fast out there I guess. hope they are OK

here's the latest from PFT:
DID BUCS’ OFFER COME TOO LATE?Posted by Mike Florio on March 1, 2009, 1:17 p.m.
ESPN’s Chris Mortensen has reported, with excellent elaboration via ESPN.com’s Tim Graham, that the Buccaneers offered a first-round and a third-round pick for quarterback Matt Cassel as part of the menage-a-trade that would have sent quarterback Matt Cassel to the Broncos and quarterback Jay Cutler to Tampa.
So why did the Pats pass?
A reader has shared with us this nugget from Michael Felger of WEEI. Put simply, the Bucs arrived at the party too late (and possibly with a cinnamon bobka).
If that’s the case, then it all makes sense.
But Mort says (via Graham) that the Broncos were willing to give up their own first-round pick — No. 12 overall in the draft — for Cassel. Under those circumstances, why didn’t Belichick bite?
We agree with Mortensen’s suggestion that Belichick would be less willing to help a former assistant coach than to help the front-office guy who helped set the table for those three Super Bowl victories in four year.
Mort also suggests that the Pats leaked word of the Broncos’ effort to trade Cutler to the Boston Globe as a way to mess with the Broncos.
Um, wow.
We only wish that the Broncos and Pats played each other twice per year. As a consolation, the Broncos and Chiefs still do.
UPDATE: Tom Curran also reports that the Bucs and Broncos showed up after Pats coach Bill Belichick had decided to pull the trigger on the trade with the Chiefs. Credit Chiefs G.M. Scott Pioli for: (1) knowing that the Patriots were ready to do something right away with Cassel; and (2) getting a number and placing his order while the other teams were still loitering in the lobby of Schnitzer’s.

― cr?m of the crop (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 1 March 2009 20:18 (seventeen years ago)
I didn't see a word in the Boston Globe about Denver.. does he mean the Herald? those guys will print anything from anonymous sources (Karen G is pretty good though) & AFAIK their anonymous sources are likely NOT the patriots, given that.. the one dude seems to have a vendetta against Belichick and the other one printed (and later had to retract and apologize for) an article accusing the Pats of videotaping St Louis' walk through before the 2002 Super Bowl. the article came out the day before 2007 Super Bowl. great reporter there.

RUMOR HAS IT that josh mcdaniels was trying to trade for cassell by peddling cutler off to the bucs or the lions with the pats receiving the broncos first round pick (12 overall). depending on who you believe a. the broncos were never serious about it and were approached by other teams b. the pats decided to go w/ the chiefs even tho their offer was worse because belichick wanted to 1. screw over mcdaniels or 2. show sum <3 to pioli or c. the broncos/bucs deal was proposed to the pats after the chiefs one was closed and belichick didn't go back on his word w/ pioli

Matt Cassell did pretty good in a odd situation for NE, but I think it is crazy to think about taking him over Cutler. Cutler has a really big boom arm and played well last year. It was Denver's defense that was the primary reason for their collapse. This all seems to me like inventing trouble. The only exception being maybe Denver has some health reservations on Cutler with his diabetes, but that seems like a stretch.
― earlnash, Monday, 2 March 2009 03:16 (seventeen years ago)
inventing trouble sounds about right. Maybe cutler is a massive dick and is not getting along well in the locker room?

Denver WR Brandon Marshall was arrested Sunday in Atlanta and booked into the Atlanta City Jail on a disorderly conduct charge. Details of the events leading to Marshall's arrest are not known at this time. A supervisor at the jail would only tell ESPN's John Barr that Marshall was involved in a fight.
