vince officially on IR, and pre-season all-star zach sudfeld released, hopefully makig it to practice squad

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 3 October 2013 22:28 (ten years ago) link

Despite all the injuries and rookie free agents and murders etc, this team is going to go at worst 12-4. It's amazing. Not criticizing, giving mad props. This is a hell of a franchise. They piss me off but I'm in awe

is it too soon to say the exciting 1st round 1-2 of jones and hightower is not really delivering?

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 6 October 2013 18:52 (ten years ago) link

after reading reiss's first half review i feel better about jones, i know a lot of good work happens invisibly in the trenches but i just didn't see him once. hightower on the other hand is supposed to be one of those all-round versatile guys, but i think he's just not actually very good at anything, which is close but not quite the same thing. i see him involved in breakdowns a lot; his movement looks poor.

i was kind of alarmed to see solder look like he blew two big sack plays but reiss pegged them as bad playcalls (mcdaniels!) that weren't correctly adjusted at the line (brady!). it just goes to reinforce that you don't really have a clue watching from armchair, and i for one don't really know what i am talking about, which i came to terms with a long time ago.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 7 October 2013 15:49 (ten years ago) link

hightower is too gdamn slow to play outside lb

call all destroyer, Monday, 7 October 2013 16:35 (ten years ago) link

does he play at the same time as spikes? that seems like something out of the 1981 nfl

J0rdan S., Monday, 7 October 2013 16:43 (ten years ago) link

yup, pretty much. hightower plays most downs, spikes only plays running downs i think.

call all destroyer, Monday, 7 October 2013 16:47 (ten years ago) link

yeah mostly it's one or the other, altho with wilfork out i think they might show up together more. hightower his pursuit to the ball in a straight line is okay but if he has to change direction he moves like a garbage truck. and his coverage seems to be okay too if he's on the spot but quicker TEs and better route running RBs will lose him too easily.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 7 October 2013 16:49 (ten years ago) link

to be fair i feel like mostly no LBs in the nfl can cover tight ends right now

J0rdan S., Monday, 7 October 2013 17:28 (ten years ago) link

the dolphins signed two new linebackers basically explicitly to do this and have already resorted to corners, safeties and a back up lb (jelani jenkins) who is long and lean like a tight end

J0rdan S., Monday, 7 October 2013 17:29 (ten years ago) link

i wonder if the cowboys would be interested in flipping sean lee for a late round pick...

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 7 October 2013 17:40 (ten years ago) link

actually, in the realm of trades that are a little less pure fantasy, jason lacanfora had an article today about how the giants should have a firesale and rebuild which generally made sense. hackeem nicks is a guy with zero interest in playing for the giants and i would loooove to see him play for NE, i would go up to a 2nd for him although you shouldn't have to on this year's performance.

obviously a DT would be more help right now.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 7 October 2013 17:43 (ten years ago) link

as someone who has watched too many giants games this year (nyc!!) i would not advocate trading for anything above a fourth for hakeem nicks

maybe he really just is disinterested but he also looks like bigger/slower than half the tight ends in the league

J0rdan S., Monday, 7 October 2013 17:44 (ten years ago) link

i honestly think he just doesn't care this season, i can't believe he has just fallen off. he is big but he does have pretty good speed, he has made some crazy plays on the outside in the past. i bet he can run block too, BB #1 wr criterion.

this probably isn't that crazy honestly, it's the nfl

i mean off the top of my head, the falcons are missing their two pro bowl WRs, their starting RB and a backup RB, starting LT, starting DE, starting OLB

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 16 October 2013 20:46 (ten years ago) link

they shd stop running into each other at top speed

two weeks ago welker got pulverized on td catch and popped up unscathed, local guy commented "can you imagine if that was amendola?! you'd need a stretcher, a gurney, and a stretcher on top of a gurney." :(

Mayo ended his season on a cheap shot on Sproles that didn't even raise a ref's eyebrow, just a drive or so after Malcolm Jenkins got flagged (and now fined) for incidental helmet contact. I really do feel for Pats fans re: the ridiculous injury pileup that your '13 season has become (as much as I can feel bad for a team that's still kicking ass), but afaic mayo's injury is just desserts.

sopoaga comes in for beans at DT. don't know that he is going to be anything but a large dude but that is certainly one thing currently absent. bigger news is that vollmer confirmed to IR. o-line depth is stretched to breaking now.

belichick is the weirdest dude

lag∞n, Thursday, 7 November 2013 01:22 (ten years ago) link

was thinking how funny it is that danny woodhead is the best player on the chargers offense outside of rivers. if edelman had been snapped up over the summer he would prob be in the same position somewhere (actually for much of the season so far he kind of has been that guy). patriots seem to have excelled in digging up or making these tricky, unflashy but productive utility players since faulk. vereen is just a premium version of this kind of player, i can't wait for him to stay fit for 2 games in a row.
