But the Raiders have a new dude on defense called HeiNACHO which I mean, how can that not be good :D
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 21 August 2012 00:50 (thirteen years ago)
the second string patriots defense just shut down the iggles first string offense and now their second string offense just marched on and scored against the iggles first string defense.
it's like watching a horror movie
― Mordy, Tuesday, 21 August 2012 00:50 (thirteen years ago)
oops wait IheNACHO
nb i'm told the preseason doesn't mean anything.
and yet.

second preseason game in a row he came out way early w/ negative x-rays. i wonder if reid told him that if he has any pain whatsoever, he should come out to protect him for regular season (lol denial) bc otherwise idk cutler got a certain reputation for far less
― Mordy, Tuesday, 21 August 2012 02:30 (thirteen years ago)
idk if my heart can take a whole season full of x-rays. just start nick foles era already :'(

seriously just stop watching preseason games -- they mean absolutely nothing
― a hoy hoy heat (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 21 August 2012 05:01 (thirteen years ago)
foles looked pretty good i thought. that drive at the start of the 2nd half in particular was great. patriots second string secondary isn't going to win any awards but he was dropping the ball in perfect spots for the receivers.
― Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 21 August 2012 10:44 (thirteen years ago)
i hear this all the time, but surely you just mean that they mean nothing for the final record? if eg vick gets injured and is out of the season from a preseason game, that means something! also the quality of the play - crispness of execution etc - also is telling. i don't think it matters that iggs put up a thousand penalties bc like iirc demarcus ryans said, sometimes you play sloppy in a preseason game. also, the final score doesn't matter (esp if a team keeps a ton of plays in their back pocket for the season) but you still want to see some basic stuff executed correctly ESPECIALLY in the dress rehearsal preseason game.
i hope you're right tho and that the only thing this game meant was that foles is a gem and someone to watch in the future
― Mordy, Tuesday, 21 August 2012 17:14 (thirteen years ago)
also it means something of course to a lot of the players playing who may be cut/kept based on game performance which can give u an idea while watching of the depth of the team's roster which is also not nothing
― Mordy, Tuesday, 21 August 2012 17:15 (thirteen years ago)
what he means is that they don't necessarily (or even most likely) reflect the way teams will be playing in any way. it's an interteam scrimmage televised for cash and guys get beat the fuck up stupidly but i gotta agree with jordan.i watch them because i have a problem
― "Batshit crazy," the foam clog tycoon said. (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 21 August 2012 17:54 (thirteen years ago)
well, sure, if vick gets hurt, it means something -- but you don't need to watch the game to find out that vick got hurt
― a hoy hoy heat (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 21 August 2012 17:55 (thirteen years ago)
yeah my FB went crazy after the Pack's 35-10 loss to the Browns and it's like...uhhh you guys
― frogbs, Tuesday, 21 August 2012 17:57 (thirteen years ago)
i watch it for the other reasons. like if foles ends up replacing kafka as backup of the future (and sorta heir to vick throne in kolb to mcnabb style) i wanna see some of the games that established that. freaking out over vick injuries is just gravy, i guess.
― Mordy, Tuesday, 21 August 2012 17:59 (thirteen years ago)
yeah i mean i watch the preseason just to see how guys "look" but i'm not freaking out if things don't look right. it's the preseason.
― a hoy hoy heat (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 21 August 2012 18:01 (thirteen years ago)
I just cannot even acknowledge pre-season football, it's one of the most worthless things in professional team sports this side of an 82 game NBA regular season. I'm sure there are some insane gamblers or scouts that could get something out of watching it for some edge, but I don't see how considering some clubs don't even TRY, which makes the fact the Eagles lost to NE kind of puzzling.
How good is my club or any club? Heck if I know, ask me in week 2 or 5.
I do check out some schedules and by looking at the Pats schedule, they could very well be setup to go 16-0, unless by some fluke the AFC or NFC West 'get good'. They got the Ravens in B-more in week 3, Broncos at home wk.5, Houston at home wk. 14 and SF at home wk. 15; the rest of their schedule look's pretty easy breezy to me. Even if they split those 4 and some how lose to one of the division rivals on the road - they are 13-3. Other than that, I think it would either be injuries or somehow someone like Miami taking off big, but they might as well give NE a first round play off bye now.

on a play by play basis there are always interesting things to see in a preseason game. disdaining the value of these games totally is no better than leaping to conclusions based on them. i can tell you now, for example, that the eagles o-line is looking average at best, and the pats' depth on o-line is practically non-existent, that is unless the respective coaching staffs told their o-line personnel to go 50% because it's a preseason game and it doesn't matter if the qbs take a few hits. i didn't know thing 1 about foles before the game and i couldn't tell you now how he'd perform in a real game, but i at least know that he has the acuity to make a good read and the technicals to drop a pass into a nice spot at different levels. by contrast, i got to see that hoyer and mallett are both terrible decision makers at this point in their development, so i can be pretty confident that if brady goes down week 1 this year, i can safely unplug my tv on sundays.
― Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 22 August 2012 10:52 (thirteen years ago)
unless the respective coaching staffs told their o-line personnel to go 50% because it's a preseason game and it doesn't matter if the qbs take a few hits
see, this is the confusing thing to me. i understand not wanting to show all your tricks in a preseason game but a hit on a qb hurts the same preseason or during the season
― Mordy, Wednesday, 22 August 2012 14:10 (thirteen years ago)
yeah that was rhetorical
― Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 22 August 2012 14:18 (thirteen years ago)
i mean, i don't know this for a fact, but you have to believe if any area of the team is asked to play with full intensity in preseason it is the pass protectors
― Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 22 August 2012 14:20 (thirteen years ago)
preseason is fun, i like all the weird preseason heroes that emerge and then don't even make the special teams unit...plus it means football is back!
― Jandek at the Disco (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 16:43 (thirteen years ago)
The good thing about preseason is that it gives you a look at the new guys and does give you a small preview of what to expect from them later on, since the young dudes may well be fighting for a roster spot and will give 100%. For Packer fans watching Rodgers in the preseason in 2009 was huge, everyone just holding their breath and thinking "please be good".
― frogbs, Wednesday, 22 August 2012 16:46 (thirteen years ago)
the good thing about preseason is it means real football starts soon
like how thanksgiving is practice christmas with food & no presents
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 16:48 (thirteen years ago)
when belichick talks about preseason he basically says he gameplans to get matchups on tape - like if he has a rookie and he wants to see how he looks against a bunch of different types of players, he does what he can to scheme him up against as many guys as he can. theres no value in gameplanning to exploit another teams weaknesses in preseason
― WheatusVEVO (Hungry4Ass), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 17:15 (thirteen years ago)

i think other coaches probably have different approaches, but it was interesting because yeah, i hadnt thought of it that way before.
― WheatusVEVO (Hungry4Ass), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 17:22 (thirteen years ago)
you guys don't like checking out the 2nd teamers and dudes and seeing who's going to make the team?
like in the vikings game this dude name Audie Cole had TWO interceptions returned for a touchdown in the 2nd half, was fun for the kid...
