this bounty thing looks worse than I thought:
Former New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams offered cash to the player who struck San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith in the head during the 2011 NFC playoffs, according to USA Today. According to the video released by filmmaker Sean Pamphilon, who was working on a documentary on a former special teamer with ALS, Williams was recorded as saying, “We hit expletive Smith right there” as Smith pointed under his chin. Smith then rubbed his thumb against his index and middle fingers in reference to the potential fine, saying “I got the first one. I got the first one. Go get it. Go lay that expletive.” During the clip, Williams also mentioned to injure running back Frank Gore saying, “Kill the head, the body will die. We’ve do to do everything in the world to make sure we kill Frank Gore’s head. We want him running sideways. We want his head sideways.” The video was released on Thursday morning, the same day Sean Payton and other suspended Saints officials were planning to appeal their bans to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

as gross as that speech is it seems like non-news to me, i'm sure most pregame speeches are pretty gross.

i just think it's funny that the saints d sucked so hard

― wrapped sausage stylus (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 5 April 2012 15:15 (fourteen years ago)
my two thoughts are basically
- how historically dumb is gregg williams for delivering that speech IN THE PRESENCE OF CAMERAS
- how hilarious is the phrase "continue to touch and affect the head"
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 5 April 2012 15:42 (fourteen years ago)
and yeah i don't know, the rhetoric ("kill frank gore's head") is pretty ratcheted up, but that's a message that i'm sure is delivered in locker rooms across the league. the giants admitted to targeting kyle williams, too.
and as i've said before, in that same saints-niners game dashon gholston was knocking people out on head to head hits which is apparently okay because the giants d coordinator didn't, as far as we know, tell him to kill lance moore's head before the game
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 5 April 2012 15:44 (fourteen years ago)
er, the niners d coordinator etc
j0rdan otm. I mean Williams says all that shit in front of cameras, and on top of that, when this story first broke didnt' they say they've they've got a ridiculous amount email printouts or something crazy where they're talking about this crap IN WRITING.
ffs
― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 5 April 2012 16:01 (fourteen years ago)
it's sort of admirable in a way that the filmmaker is more or less risking his professional career by putting this stuff out there
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 5 April 2012 17:19 (fourteen years ago)
i mean the whole "this stuff goes on all the time" observation/argument is really meaningless
the NFL is a huge business and this kinda idiotic shit -- esp in front of cameras -- totally opens them up to liability, lawsuits etc
like i can't believe how stupid this guy is. he should be banned for life.
― Mississippi Butt Hurt (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 5 April 2012 17:34 (fourteen years ago)
well it is and it isn't...i mean i'm genuinely confused about what this new stuff today adds to the case against williams. i guess makes it more concrete for ppl? idk.
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 5 April 2012 17:57 (fourteen years ago)
well there is definitely the sense that the perceived worst crime here is hubris against the nfl, and the video is yet another layer of egregiousness
― Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 5 April 2012 18:04 (fourteen years ago)
if any players wanted to file a lawsuit this would definitely help

I think Gregg Williams is totally fxxxxd and will never work in the NFL again. He's an idiot.
Yeah I think the NFL is a very crass game, but I somehow doubt that Tony Dungy or crap even Belichick (the evil one) would be firing up using messages to attack peoples on bad ankles or giving people concussions.
I don't doubt others have done so, so I doubt Williams talk is unique, but DAAAMNNN no wonder the guy never got another head coaching job (and others wondered about that).
― earlnash, Friday, 6 April 2012 07:22 (fourteen years ago)
oh come on. the best that you can say is thank god this sort of thing is only IMPLIED on every other team. belichick only needs to look at a dude and that dude will hammer down.

its pretty uncoool to meddle in a pick that's not yours like that. if i was a team wanting to trade up to get that pick, i'd be pissed.

If you haven't seen it, you all should search out the Gruden QB Camp episode with Andrew Luck. It is a good one.
JG drops quite a few references to "The Sheriff" in it and really comes out saying Luck got the mental game more than any college Qb he has ever seen.

got so frustrated watching Jeopardy two days ago, can't remember the question but it was something like "this guy, who won the Super Bowl in 2002, now a Monday Night Football announcer", and the contestants were just staring into space
later I realized, not knowing the answer to that question is probably what gets you on Jeopardy in the first place
