The idea I thought was going to work was about how the Jets fans and Pats fans used to be kindred spirits (the lovable losers from the AFL who got their asses kicked by Miami every year) and now we hate each other and things have fallen apart. I thought it was like Seth and Evan in Superbad and actually the Jets are like Seth (more bombastic and acerbic) and the Pats were like Evan (our 3 SB's were like Evan going to Dartmouth whole Seth stayed home and went to a state school). So last week's game was like Evan graduating, coming home, then somehow Seth getting the upper hand... but at about the 3-hr mark I realized the idea was going nowhere. HATE WHEN THAT HAPPENS.

I have spent the past three days or so trying to figure out how important this game is on the all-time level for me. Like, it feels like a bigger deal than the 2007-08 NFC Championship, because I had absolutely no faith that had the Packers won they would have beaten the 18-0 Patriots, which means I'd have to go all the way back to the '98 Super Bowl, but even then I was like 15 years old and had really only been a Green Bay fan for like two or three years. Plus, since it's against the Bears for a trip to the Super Bowl, it approaches the symbolic importance of the Favre-Packers games in 2009, but it's also actually meaningful, and not just a regular season game against the Vikings. Either the Super Bowl is going to be awesome and terrifying or else it will suck and I will be quietly deciding whether I am really willing to get behind the Steelers or Jets. It might actually be the biggest football game I've ever seen, and basically approaching the 2006 and 2007 Final Fours and 1988 World Series.

These are the things I occupy my time with when I get real nervous about football. I am glad Aaron Rodgers seems to be better at dealing with big game pressure than me.

steelers/bears -- epic steel mill blue collar throwdown
steelers/packers -- smashmouth d and roethlisberger vs dreamboat and the weapons
jets/packers -- watch as rodgers hopefully carves up the jets
jets/bears -- personal joy at the bears' presence, true good vs evil matchup w/the coaches, the most interesting moron in the world vs that usc choad
