zzz boring Raider talk: Raiders will go over .500 if Gradkowski does the cleanup like he did against the Rams, and McFadden stays healthy & runsrunsruns. xp it's not so much that the raiders are that much better (well they're somewhat better) as it is that they should be able to go 6-10 with their schedule without trying. And they appear to be trying!

Weirdness, thy name is Monday Night Football.

Close games are usually closer, upsets happen more often than usual, great players play poorly, poor players play greatly. So, while Green Bay should absolutely win this, I'm going with Chicago anyway. (I'm not putting a lot of confidence points on it, though.)

one amazing thing about the bears so far is that Cutler has been so resolute and tough in the face of constant pressure. He's a SOB, but a tough SOB.

Couple of things I have noticed...

Houston Texans have given up over 800 yards in passing in the first two weeks.

Talking heads are talking like the Bears don't have any 'real' receivers. Now going into last year, I could see this point, as they didn't have much experience. They put up some yards up last year, even if the interceptions killed them. Their wide outs are just flat out fast, even some of the backups like Bennett. I'd like to see them have a hands/possession receiver, but they pretty much have that with Forte and he has the ability to make a move after the catch. Olsen isn't bad either. That offensive line...err, I hope they can keep Cutler from getting killed.

Bears defense put some flat out knocks on the Cowboys last week.

Have you guys noticed that on the team pages for Yahoo (those of you who play in the fantasy leagues, anyway) they list salaries? I was just peeping the Raiders page and saw this: punter Shane Lechler makes $6,401,560 in 2010, while Jason Campbell, Bruce Gradkowski and Michael Bush don't even make that much combined. Punting is lucrative!

I was watching this with my friends from Wisconsin, and a couple of friends who inexplicably enjoy the Bears, so I could not share it with you guys, but basically all I would have done was type out profanities in capital letters every time something good happened but was immediately negated because of a penalty. This happened many times tonight.

On the plus side, watching the NFL while eating BBQ and hanging out with four of your best dudes is a pretty solid way to make up for a 13+ hour day of surgery clerkship.

the bears got it down to about the three yard line with maybe like 1:29 left and the pack had their one timeout & instead of letting them score a td the packers D keeps the bears out of the end zone until the clock gets to 8 seconds or whatever and robbie gould hits a glorified extra point

All the talk before the season about the Bears being unwise to spend all that money on Julius Peppers seems pretty foolish now.

Aside from running back a punt and throwing a TD there's pretty much nothing Peppers didn't do on the field.

it's always worth keeping an eye on someone who draws "hey look, he's actually playing hard!!" articles in the third game of the season

You guys would know more than I would since I only watched him every once in awhile on the Panthers, but it would not surprise me if one of the reasons he slacked a bit was because he was on a shitty team, a la Randy Moss. Before the Panthers fell apart he seemed like a total badass. Now he's playing on what seems like a good team, playing along with some guys he has to be accountable to and a coach maybe he respects a little more ... also, even his worst seasons in Carolina he was a disruptive force, and the Bears didn't really have that. If he draws double teams it will make it easier for Urlacher and Briggs to roam. I think he makes that defense a lot better.

the panthers have never been worse than 7-9 since he's been there, and had three seasons of 11+ wins. you might be right, but this is not a moss on the raiders thing.

They were pretty dang bad last year, 7-9 notwithstanding.

yeah, and they were pretty damn good the year before--peppers' reputation did not suddenly appear last year.

Peppers was also kind of banged up for a couple of years in Carolina, which was part of the reason his production slid down a bit.
