peyton in press conference is like a kid being called on at school, all struggling to remember exactly what coverages the patriots were in on the last drive and how much the colts were down by at various points. nobody is grading you, peyton, relax.

at one point he was like, "we were down 34-21, I THINK" and he winced really hard with the effort at remembering and it was a little scary

horseshoe, Monday, 16 November 2009 05:11 (sixteen years ago)

like maybe archie manning makes him give him a post-game play by play of every look the defense gave him after every game

horseshoe, Monday, 16 November 2009 05:11 (sixteen years ago)

ok I'm going to go to bed and laugh myself to sleep

WmC, Monday, 16 November 2009 05:12 (sixteen years ago)

also i'm glad the colts won and i still hate the patriots but i thought the fourth-down call was badass and totally in character.

horseshoe, Monday, 16 November 2009 05:15 (sixteen years ago)

brady trying to defend that call.. awkward

http://i33.tinypic.com/fu9cvt.jpg

nah i mean, if it worked everybody would say bb was the most brilliant genius ever, but then it's like harrison saying, that says you don't trust the guys on the defense..

C MON MAN (daria-g), Monday, 16 November 2009 05:24 (sixteen years ago)

ok guys i'm gonna post some thoughts abt this before i try to erase it from my mind.

belichick knew the defense was completely gassed--they played the entire game in a 2-4-5 since their 2nd and 3rd-best defensive lineman were inactive. the colts finally figured this out and realized they could double wilfork and run right by prior and wright and...oh yeah those are like the three guys that played. on reflection it's impressive that the defense held up for as long as it did but imo belichick rightly figured that they hadn't stopped the colts for an entire quarter (save a gift INT) and weren't about to start. so he put the game on the line with his offense and u know what? it damn near worked.

that being said what was really frustrating was that the colts made better adjustments as the game went on. in addition to figuring out how limited the pats defense was, they also realized that the pats offense was only using draws and delays for running plays, and the colts blew up several plays in the fourth that would have helped ice the game. gotta also hand it to mathis who had a great game, and the pats never figured out how to help kaczur on the right side.

finally lack of a third receiver is KILLING the pats and i'd venture a guess that the colts figured that out too--it's not a big role in the offense but you need someone competent to make plays when the opposing defense overcompensates for moss and welker. edelman and stanback are clearly not the answer yet (or possibly ever), and ben watson is a talented guy who will never be a go-to guy.

sadly good luck hearing abt most of that it's all gonna be LOL BELICHICK U TARD--i'm not saying he was right in going for it but i think he saw where the game was headed.

omaha deserved 311 (call all destroyer), Monday, 16 November 2009 05:29 (sixteen years ago)

the two play calls on 3rd & 4th were super conservative & uncreative

house of flying jaggers (J0rdan S.), Monday, 16 November 2009 05:31 (sixteen years ago)

i agree--can't run the spread if you're never going to throw to 2 of the 5 guys. that being said the fourth down play was inches from working and the third down play was a qb pressure where brady's arm was hit on release.

omaha deserved 311 (call all destroyer), Monday, 16 November 2009 05:33 (sixteen years ago)

no just no ok

SMH (ice cr?m), Monday, 16 November 2009 05:35 (sixteen years ago)

going for it was a pretty sane gamble imo. if the alternative is betting against peyton manning on a last minute cross-field drive, hell, going for a 4th and 6 wouldn't even be that crazy.

afc title game 06 flashback

C MON MAN (daria-g), Monday, 16 November 2009 05:35 (sixteen years ago)

think what we can all agree on is that whatever the thought process was, bill belichick just failed to go "HAM"

everyone kills people (the schef (adam schefter ha ha)), Monday, 16 November 2009 05:38 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, the blitz on third was a good call by the colts

house of flying jaggers (J0rdan S.), Monday, 16 November 2009 05:38 (sixteen years ago)

trent dilfer is infuriated about this, he is just yelling and screaming, it's like this was the last straw for him, the cheating scandal was one thing but HOW DARE BELICHICK MAKE SUCH A CALL. honestly i'm not sure that he's ever watched an eagles or chargers game if he really thinks this was the worst thing that's ever come from a coach's mind.

house of flying jaggers (J0rdan S.), Monday, 16 November 2009 05:41 (sixteen years ago)

hahaha wait where is trent dilfer doing this? deion sanders loves the call, btw, because belichick has swagger, and thinks the official was wrong to call it short of the first down.

horseshoe, Monday, 16 November 2009 05:42 (sixteen years ago)

on espn's "sports shouting"! but now it's berman making his "tweet! tweet! whoop!" noises :(

everyone kills people (the schef (adam schefter ha ha)), Monday, 16 November 2009 05:46 (sixteen years ago)

The more I actually watch the 4th down play the more I am like "Well OK that is pretty defensible, and that spot might have gotten pushed forward on review", but burning the timeouts is what I do not really understand.

C-L, Monday, 16 November 2009 05:47 (sixteen years ago)

it's not so much the concept of the call itself, it's that they were on the 28 yard line, and they had no time outs, and then called a play that didn't make a lot of sense to me.

everyone kills people (the schef (adam schefter ha ha)), Monday, 16 November 2009 05:49 (sixteen years ago)

but, like, in the general scheme of "stupid shit coaches have done" it doesn't even hold a candle to, like, that whole "eagles didn't realize a game could end in a tie" debacle, for example.

or andy reid kicking a field goal the other week

house of flying jaggers (J0rdan S.), Monday, 16 November 2009 05:50 (sixteen years ago)

if any analyst realizes that this was not about "arrogance" or "swagger" i'm going to send them a thank-you note.

also forgot to mention that the pats were without their "best" olb tully banta-cain and could basically not substitute linebackers.

omaha deserved 311 (call all destroyer), Monday, 16 November 2009 05:50 (sixteen years ago)

every play is about swagger this week, didn't you get the memo

oh well. a play or two goes the other way..

C MON MAN (daria-g), Monday, 16 November 2009 06:17 (sixteen years ago)

most def like watching that 2006 afc title game.. you know it won't end well

espn replays maurice jones-drew end zone celebration - what was that?!

C MON MAN (daria-g), Monday, 16 November 2009 06:20 (sixteen years ago)

CAD is mostly otm with his analysis there. the NE defense had died. indy had taken the ball 80 yards in 2 mins twice in that quarter. 2y of offense i would guess was the more sound option statistically by a mile. any other coach in the league make that call? say what you will but that dude has gigantic testicles and they have and will win more often because of that than lose. the move should've been matched by a slightly ballsier play call tho.

but they didn't lose the game on that play - they lost it on those two turnovers in the red zone when they already knew that they were down to the bare bones on defense and needed to help them out. pretty boneheaded turnovers too i thought.

aarrissi-a-roni, Monday, 16 November 2009 13:29 (sixteen years ago)

btw the fact that the pats got out-adjusted is particularly galling given the fact that the colts are coached by the inflatable autopilot from "airplane!"
