Pat Reily is a genius GM. He's going to get younger, with a player that can be dumped at the end of the season and with the Heat having massive cap space, a lottery pick and a league-wide star (or two, with Marion) to build around.

(And, it should be noted, with a hell of a player in Marion).

If Riley pulls this off, I totally agree. He could let Wade more or less skip that whole painful period that other stars have had to endure when their teams have sucked and there wasn't anything they could do about it (KG, Pierce, McGrady come to mind).

Steve Kerr, another ex-player with no management experience, who just fucked his team royally. That said I don't think the Suns were going to win the West as they stood anyway.

I guess in the best of all possible scenarios, Diaw and Hill basically give you most of what Marion gave, and Shaq adds extra scoring power and size.

Until I just checked, I'd forgotten how thin this team has become. They used to be able to bring Kurt Thomas off the bench, but now behind Shaq and Amare they have Sean Marks and Brian Skinner. And when Shaq's hurt, Barbosa's the only serviceable backup they have.

But yes, his contract will weight you down this season or next. But at this stage, Shaq's like a blue-chip to be played when you're close to a title, and I'm not sure how many championship runs Nash has left, so the timing may be good.

I'd be thrilled if O'Neal helps Phoenix win a title. They deserve it.

skinner's actually been a good fit, plus the beard is fantastic for morale

it would be nice if they could get a real point guard who wasn't 172 years old to play 10 minutes behind nash for sure, but otherwise most teams only go 7 deep in the playoffs

why has no one brought up the fact that shaq has played like 20 games this year? why are people acting a if it's a foregone conclusion that he's even going to make it into the playoffs?

one of the reasons they sited for picking up shaq was defense. i don't see it. "WOW there's a big 7 footer nailed to the paint"

+ marion is a pretty good perimeter defender. his disgruntlement must have run deep for this to make any sense to anyone. like jordan said shaq is hurt *as we speak*, to say nothing of how ineffectual he was when he was "healthy" earlier this year.

Even if Shaq somehow comes back this year and plays decently, what about the OTHER TWO YEARS in which he is still under contract?
