yeah I mean you have to be such a freak to want to do this to yourself for a 21st year, he’s incredible

We'll see how he feels after foot surgery. He was clearly hobbled throughout the postseason and his durability issues/risk aren't likely to improve in the coming years.
― octobeard, Tuesday, 23 May 2023 18:33 (eleven months ago) link
I think the NBA playoffs just crush your spirit in a way that doesn't really exist in other sports. Baseball has tons of variance baked into every game and football is single-elimination, where a bad bounce can end your whole season. The NBA has some series that are like that where they can really go either way (Nets/Bucks is a pretty clear example) but more often than that you just get beat. Lakers beat the Grizz and the Dubs pretty thoroughly - no doubt they were the better team in those series. Then Denver kicked their ass. Not only that but they did so with LeBron leaving everything out on the floor, just physically unable to attack the rim or draw contact or even drive at all once they got into crunch time. He's 38 and still somehow one of the most high-usage players in the NBA, he's doing things unheard of in NBA history, but he's just spent. You aren't gonna win 4 playoff series with him as your go-to guy. I think he knows it too. But I think ums is right, that feeling fades and once the numbness wears off I think he is gonna want to play another year or two. We see this constantly in professional sports, especially the NFL. They don't retire until the game does it for them.
― frogbs, Tuesday, 23 May 2023 18:50 (eleven months ago) link
Also I think the last decade has had some pretty stunning acheivements from "washed up" athletes, you got Peyton winning a Super Bowl at 39, Brady at 44 (!!), Tiger winning the Masters somehow again after 400 leg surgeries and several years of not even making the cut, even LeBron himself during the bubble - he was "only" 35 but still had logged more NBA minutes than all but a handful of players. I think all that stuff weighs pretty hard on the minds of those late-30s former MVPs. LeBron can totally win another ring just probably not with the Lakers.
― frogbs, Tuesday, 23 May 2023 18:53 (eleven months ago) link
hes maneuvering his way to the dubs
― Spottie, Tuesday, 23 May 2023 18:57 (eleven months ago) link
if winning a ring was his top priority he wouldn’t have resigned w the lakers in the first place. it’s been very clear for years that he’s put having his family in LA above his own personal professional goals. i think the plan has always been the same & isn’t going to change — finish out his contract in LA & then figure out his next move once bronny’s future is more clear. anyone who thinks bron is moving to another city after bronny chose to play at USC is crazy
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 23 May 2023 19:15 (eleven months ago) link
btw bronny is a top prospect now after being borderline before
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 23 May 2023 19:19 (eleven months ago) link
for sure it's hard to know what LeBron's goals even are right now, outside of winning another one to get closer to Jordan there's nothing left for him to do
― frogbs, Tuesday, 23 May 2023 19:23 (eleven months ago) link
and I hate that his son's name is "Bronny". it sounds a lot like "Brony". I wish he was just named "LeBron 2"

i would be shocked if he actually retires but would like to think his comments after the game were sincere, and a recognition that he went as hard as he could in this series and in the closeout game, and it didn't get them particularly close to the promised land.
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 23 May 2023 19:40 (eleven months ago) link
yeah his goals are to chill and play for the lakers. if he really backseat-GMed them into last year's awful team then he's hurt his career a bit that way but he hasn't hurt it on the court

lol as i said before its funny when a bunch of moderately successful teams fire their coaches and then all hire each others coaches becuase they want an experienced guy just not the one who lost them their last playoffs

it is ridiculous, tho it seems like nurse quit and imo hes actually good so whoever gets him wins this years coach carousel

― immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 24 May 2023 15:23 (eleven months ago) link
with doc especially, i'm not sure what teams think they are getting from him at this point. i guess if you feel like you're a contender you don't want to roll the dice on somebody's top assistant is the though process, but man idk.
― circles, Wednesday, 24 May 2023 15:26 (eleven months ago) link
the team that has been down 30 points at halftime in each of its last two elimination games hiring doc rivers would be very powerful
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 24 May 2023 15:32 (eleven months ago) link
going with a first time head coach (instead of Doc or Bud) seems like a higher ceiling move. Nick Nurse had no pedigree when he was hired.

Despite the extreme lengths to which O’Neal has gone to avoid the (FTX) lawsuit, he was apparently able to have a laugh about it Tuesday night. The TNT broadcast had Kareem Abdul-Jabbar present Curry, the Atherton housing policy enthusiast, with the NBA’s Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion award before the game. “Steph, I don’t have a question,” O’Neal said. “We know where you come from: Your father is a class act, your mother is a class act — her and my mother are friends, they speak highly of you. I speak highly of you. You’re my favorite player. I just want to say, congratulations, my brother, and thanks for getting me in trouble. Don’t say nothing,” he said to a laughing Curry. “Be quiet.” Charles Barkley quickly bailed the segment out with a question about golf.
