Role Player Hollafame Class of 2022 Inductee: Boris Diaw (*20 points, 6 votes, 1 1st place votes) *ILH Role Player Hollafame record
Roles: point forward, chubby Adonis, Swiss (French) army knife
Notable stats: one of the few NBA players to log minutes at all 5 positions in his NBA career (LeBron and Giannis), 2014 NBA champ (the world’s most perfect basketball team according to science)
Why they never reached stardom: Despite a preternatural gift for hooping and ideal size for a switchable forward, he didn’t really care about scoring or even basketball that much because fuck trying hard tbh. He’s just out here living his best life and he happened to play in the NBA as a side hustle.

Role Player Hollafame Class of 2022 Inductee: Mike Miller (9 points, 3 votes)
Roles: sniper, bucket-getter
Notable stats: 00-01 Rookie of the Year, 05-06 Sixth Man of the Year, 2-time NBA champ, 28th all-time career 3-point percentage (40.7%)
Why they never reached stardom: Prior to his Heat mercenary years, he was a good stats on mediocre teams guy. Then he was a limited stats on title team guy. The ideal Hollafame career.

Role Player Hollafame Class of 2022 Inductee: Chuck Person (7 points, 2 votes)
Roles: sniper, bucket-getter
Notable stats: 1987 Rookie of the Year, Eccojams Vol. 1 pioneered the vaporware subgenre
Why they never reached stardom: Started his career on bad Pacers teams which eventually became good Pacers teams once he went from the #1 to #2 option (Reggie Miller). He averaged 19 PPG in 6 seasons in Indy before being traded to Minny. He eventually transitioned into a super-efficient bench shooter there and in SA. Wasn’t the same after a season-long back injury kept him out of the 96-97 season.

Role Player Hollafame Class of 2022 Inductee: Leandro Barbosa (6 points, 2 votes)
Roles: instant offense off the bench, sniper
Notable stats: 06-07 Sixth Man of the Year, 2015 NBA Champ, GBBOAT (greatest Brazilian baller of all time), 95th all-time career 3-point percentage (38.7%)
Why they never reached stardom: Too small to be a proper SG defensively, not enough of a floor general to be a proper PG. Perfect for getting buckets against second units.

Role Player Hollafame Class of 2022 Inductee: Luis Scola (6 points, 2 votes)
Roles: physical big man with passing smarts
Notable stats: 07-08 NBA All-Rookie Team (at age 28), 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist (basketball) and 2008 Bronze (hair)
Why they never reached stardom: A Spurs draft-and-stash that never panned out because his contract buyout was too expensive for the cheap-ass Spurs, his trade to Houston is what allowed him to come stateside at the ripe old age of 27. His best season (18.3 PPG) came in-between the T-Mac and Harden eras in H-Town as he co-starred with Kyle Lowry and Kevin Martin.

Barbosa in his prime one of the fastest guards ever, nice to see lots of representation from the Nash-era suns. Did he get a lot of minutes on that warriors run?

Well done m bise! Great write-ups and pics, the Diaw esp an all time classic.

I missed the tiebreaker and would’ve gone hard for crazy eyes kurt but doesn’t look like that would’ve put him over the edge anyway. Scola was great but wish we’d gotten 5 more (earlier) years of him in the NBA.

xpost
barbosa was like a 15 minutes a game guy in the regular season and a bit less in the offs. that '14-'15 warriors team had such good perimeter depth they could bring iggy, shaun livingston, AND barbosa off the bench.

Eccojams Vol. 1 pioneered the vaporware subgenre

lol, a renaissance hooper. i don't really remember chuck, but it seems like he was sort of a pioneer as a high-ish 3pt volume role player? on the spurs in the mid '90s he was taking 5 or 6 a game, which doesn't sound like that many now, but was top 10 in the league those years. also getting hurt and not playing in '96-'97 must have helped out with the timmy tank.

96-97 spurs were built to contend until drob missed all but 6 games, chuck out for the year, sean elliott missed half the season. down extremely bad.

chuck's sa peak was as the 6th man on the 62-win 94-95 spurs, that team could cook with aj-vinny-sean-rodman-robinson as the starting 5. olajuwon owning david and robert horry coming to town is what cost em that year.

excellent class. diaw on the upper tier of role players imo.

"Boris walks into the gym one day wearing flip-flops and holding his customary cappuccino, which was a staple for him every morning," Griffin recalled. "It was during pre-draft workouts, so he sees the Vertec machine and asks what it is.

"We tell him it measures your vertical leap by determining how many of the bars you can touch. He asks what's the highest anyone has ever gone, and we tell him Amare' Stoudemire cleared the entire rack.

"Boris puts down the cappuccino, takes off his flip-flops and clears the entire rack on the first try. Then he calmly puts his flip-flops back on, picks up his cappuccino and walks away, saying, 'That was not difficult."

The three playoff teams that Chuck Person and Reggie Miller had in Indianapolis (89/90-91/92) were a pretty big deal in town, even though they were a .500 club.

Keep in mind, the Central was a really tough division at the time as you had the Bad Boy Pistons and the Jordan Bulls rising. Atlanta, Cleveland and Milwaukee were both pretty decent too.

Pacers got pretty screwed by the merger and were just freaking terrible for over a decade and this was the first time they had made the playoffs.

It also corresponds in city lore as downtown Indy really started to change and nightlife started to blossom down there.

They came really close in 90/91 to knocking off and upsetting the Celtics losing a 5 game series 3-2.

That's not correct actually, it was Person's rookie year in 86/87 that they first made the playoffs with Dr. Jack Ramsey as coach (and later color commentator for the Pacers).

These results really do not resemble my ballot at all but congrats to the inductees. :)
