seems like there's no consensus on the no 1 pick which is pretty interesting, paolo banchero seems like leader in the clubhouse as of now but i see various boards that have other guys at no. 1. he just had prob his best game of the season vs FSU tho, putting up 20-12-7 on 6-11 shooting and making tons of plays down the stretch, nice touch on his passes. i wonder how he'll test athletically, you don't necessarily see overwhelming athleticism in these clips, but he's skilled, poised, and very strong, some real men amongst boys plays. i don't have a great feel for what position ppl think he will play defensively, he's either a positionless fever dream or an exploitable tweener, i can't really tell. if he could passably play center he could be a monster but idk if that's in his future. he's a 34% shooter from deep and shoots 76% from the line, w/ his size the tools are there for a really great offensive player, consistent double-doubles w/ potential for some 20-10-5 type of seasons. feel like ben simmons is a decent comp and what you're giving up in athleticism w/ banchero you gain in overall offensive skill, especially in terms of scoring, as well as just overall oomph on the game. some good clips of his passing in the NC state game from last week, he has a calmness about him in the way that he reads the floor that feels very functional, not preternatural necessarily but if his court vision continues to grow along w/ the rest of his game he will likely be very hard to defend.

everyone seems to have holmgren banchero and jabari smith in some order as the top three, i think i still like holmgren just cause he has that combo of freakish body and great feel for the game that nba stars are made of, smith is your prototypical super athletic very big wing i can def see why teams would be very stoked on him, banchero has the most developed game but maybe lacks some of the elite athleticism length and so forth that could make him an absolute top guy idk
― lag∞n, Friday, 21 January 2022 12:13 (five months ago) link
jabari is my #1 bc of the Big Wing thing, thats the most important position in hoops rn, chet worries me bc he just looks like a guy who will miss a lot of time, prove me wrong chet
if the spurs dont launch into the lottery, i like keegan murray from iowa lot. he's older (21 i think) but he's got a pretty nba-ready game from the looks of things

yeah i can see that. marvin bagley & jahlil okafor two other duke guys w/o great athleticism who just dominated w/ size in college and then flamed out. beasley only averaged 1.6 apg in college tho, paolo is at double that, and he's bigger. also michael beasley who has his head screwed on straight & plays the game less selfishly could've been a good player albeit not a multi time all star or anything

jabari smith def seems like a top 3 pick to me, top 5 at absolute worst. if there's any jayson tatum out of the top group it would be him. his spot up shot is a bit slow to me, and the way the ball comes off his hand when he shoots FTs seems a bit weird. he does have a nice fadeaway midrange game tho, and his hands are very active on defense. 7' 2" wingspan. he's another one where i wonder how he tests athletically, you don't see him just killing guys at the rim in his clips... paging jayson tatum. he also only has a season high of four assists this year. i think he's prob below chet and banchero for me
clip of him putting up 25-7-1 w/ 4 blocks and 2 steals on the road vs alabama

chet's shot is so smooth. w/ his defensive potential i feel like he has to go number 1, at worst i feel like you're getting a porzingis type player w/ a better shot and a body potentially less conducive to leg injuries. at best you're potentially getting like karl towns crossed w/ evan mobley. in between maybe he's chris bosh w/ more rim protection. idk

yeah i like chet too, with his freakish arms crazy feel for the game and having all the offensive skills he should go 1 imho, you're potentially getting like karl towns crossed w/ evan mobley exactly he pretty clearly has the highest ceiling of the top guys, the reason hes not the consensus #1 right now is prob because hes not really featured on his team cause he plays next to an older player of the year candidate and that evaluators tend to underrate feel for the game being a true baller and so forth due to it being highly intangible

― lag∞n, Wednesday, 26 January 2022 21:16 (four months ago) link
i feel like evan mobley is pretty strong proof of concept for chet, almost feels like it's lining up for it to be the perfect year to take a guy like this no 1 overall. chet maybe not as great defensively i mean mobley seems like a phenom but chet is far more developed as a shooter. w/ his shooting form/touch and natural shot blocking ability i just feel like he's the kind of high floor/high ceiling prospect you should be aiming for w/ a no 1 pick. i'm trying to imagine the worst case outcome for him if he has even average health for a big man. myles turner? jarren jackson jr? his overall feel just seems far superior to those guys and he's taller and he's a better shooter etc
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 26 January 2022 21:22 (four months ago) link

I don't disagree. The most heartening thing I've read about Sharpe so far is that Dame watched all the guys who worked out for the Blazers and he was enthused about picking him. I presume the private work-out and personal interviews for the team contained a lot more info about him, his abilities and his mindset than anyone in the media has access to. All the media types can analyze is what's out in public.
― more difficult than I look (Aimless), Friday, 24 June 2022 20:29 (yesterday) link
the nfl has some weird stuff with all of the contract restructuring you can do to move money around, but the nba is probably still much more complex than that.

i don't think the NBA is any more or less complex than other leagues when it comes to roster rules -- the rules about service time and minor league options and trigger deadlines in MLB are far more complex than the two way system in the NBA -- but putting protections on picks is unique to the NBA. part of that is because the other sports don't have lotteries so you're dealing w/ an extra level of uncertainty w/ future NBA picks, but i think it also is done to purposefully facilitate transactions which is overall a net positive for the league even if it becomes overly complex a lot of the time. in baseball you have prospects driving most transactions but the NBA doesn't have that element, instead picks are the currency and allowing teams to protect picks obviously makes them feel more comfortable about trading (and also receiving) picks
― J0rdan S., Friday, 24 June 2022 20:53 (yesterday) link
the crazy thing about the NBA to me is that teams are seemingly allowed -- if they can -- to invent new ways to structure contracts and protect picks... like the rules are not already set out. it's kind of a wild west where if you and the other team agree on a way to protect the pick then the league will agree to it. thinking of i.e. daryl morey inventing the reverse protection in trading kyle lowry to the raptors. also daryl inventing the poison pill w/ the jeremy lin offer sheet

No. 11 pick (Ousmane Dieng)The Knicks had the No. 11 pick entering the night, and there was a lot of talk about them potentially moving up. Instead, they decided to trade out of the first round by sending that pick to the Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for three future first rounders. While the Knicks do need help now, getting three first round picks in exchange for one is pretty good value.
Knicks-Hornets tradeKnicks receive:
No. 13 pick (Jalen Duren)Hornets receive:
2023 first round pick via Denver (protected 1-14 until 2025)2023 second round pick via New York2023 second round pick via Utah2023 second round pick (most favorable pick between Dallas and Miami)2024 second round pick via New YorkShortly after completing the deal with the Thunder, the Knicks then got back on the phone and worked out a trade with the Charlotte Hornets. They took the 2023 first via Denver they got in the Thunder trade, and packaged it with four future seconds for the No. 13 overall pick, who would become Jalen Duren.
Knicks-Pistons tradeKnicks receive:
2025 first-round pick via Milwaukee (protected 1-4)Pistons receive:
No. 13 pick (Jalen Duren)Kemba WalkerFinally, the Knicks then flipped the No. 13 pick (Jalen Duren) and Kemba Walker to the Detroit Pistons in a third deal. In return, the Knicks got a 2025 first-round pick via Milwaukee, which the Pistons had previously acquired in the Jerami Grant trade earlier this week.

ppl are saying the knicks basically got the worst picks that OKC owned… plus they got the bucks first which is prob also not great. i would say in their defense that even not great first round picks give you flexibility in trades, ppl will take them on it’s not like they are worthless. and if the knicks use those in trades i could def see them improving their team more than if they would’ve just taken a guy at 11 which is prob like a 50/50 chance of getting a guy who can even hang in the NBA. if all they do with all this ammo is dump salary to give jalen brunson $130 million then never mind but it is feasible they make some moves that amount to more value than a low lottery rookie
