some interesting thoughts in here re nba positional trends and how that affects the draft https://www.theringer.com/nba/2017/11/30/16717774/jayson-tatum-boston-celtics-nba-draft-wings tho it prob overvalues said trends as trend pieces tend to, being good at basketball is still most important and teams can always do well by going countertrend

michael porter is out for the season from back surgery btw, not a great opening gambit for a potential #1

ya this draft is looking like it has 4 or 5 "#1 quality players" tho michael porter getting back surgery complicates that somewhat

its seems like bagley shd be able to play defense and therefor center tho the thing abt having a relatively short reach is worrying, wonder what the problem is

feel like mo bamba cld be one of those guys who people are pretty stoked on coming out of college like he goes in the 3-6 range then immediately upon entering the league starts doing things never seen before and everyone freaks out

watched duke-nc st last night and bagley looked like the second coming of karl anthony towns. maybe ayton or young (or bamba) have higher upside but he seems like the best combo of talent and reliability in the draft to me. https://youtu.be/1Kj9TtMiIYk
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 7 January 2018 17:33 (six years ago) link
i value tearing shit up and general basketballbilty highly, but it shd be noted that ayton is doing that too and his game seems a lil more pro
― lag∞n, Sunday, 7 January 2018 17:36 (six years ago) link
there is an insane amount of talent in this draft any of ayton bagley donic porter young and bamba prob wldve gone first last year
― lag∞n, Sunday, 7 January 2018 17:38 (six years ago) link

ayton will prob be a monster but this article was a little concerning https://www.theringer.com/2017/12/7/16743900/deandre-ayton-arizona-blocks-nba-draft
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 7 January 2018 17:43 (six years ago) link
bagley might be a little slight for center on defense in the NBA but he seems like a smart & good kid who should be able to get himself to like... playable on that end. and the offensive potential seems limitless.
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 7 January 2018 17:45 (six years ago) link
one of the enduring mysteries of the college to pro transition is that its common for an elite prospect to underperform their talent in some way then upon getting to the pros they do totally fine... or not, and its super hard to tell which player will succeed and which wont, all else being equal id take the player who has the tools and is underperforming over the one who has question marks over their fundamental abilities, of course maybe danny aigne takes a look at their mind types and choses bagley, i dont have access to the mindtype data
― lag∞n, Sunday, 7 January 2018 17:51 (six years ago) link
*the mystery mostly has to do with bad coaching imo
― lag∞n, Sunday, 7 January 2018 17:52 (six years ago) link
Ayton doesn’t play with much energy on defense. He rarely makes two efforts at contesting a shot, and he’s not particularly diligent about getting himself involved in a play when it doesn’t involve his man.
The frustrating part about the way Ayton plays is that it’s not due to any lack of ability. His defensive potential is off the charts. When he’s locked in on that side of the ball, he can be dominant. He made a few huge defensive plays in Arizona’s 67-64 win over Texas A&M on Tuesday, a game in which he significantly outplayed Robert Williams, another big man projected to go in next year’s lottery.
this prob comes down to a judgement call on personality and motivation but if i were a drafter and felt like i got a sense that those werent going to be an issue id feel fine writing off his college block numbers to the usual college bs
― lag∞n, Sunday, 7 January 2018 17:54 (six years ago) link
if bagley doesnt totally pan out i cld see him as a antwan jamison / ken faried type ie a player with a great feel for the game who just doesnt quite have the stuff to dominate
― lag∞n, Sunday, 7 January 2018 18:15 (six years ago) link
yeah i guess a lot of the ayton question comes down to answers about his personality etc that seem unknowable to the public bagley looks like a 25 ppg scorer to me tho

maybe it's been there for a long time, but i just noticed that the nba has all the draft combine testing and measurements going back to 2000 up.
https://stats.nba.com/draft/combine-strength-agility/
if nothing else it's kind of cool to have more or less real heights, wingspans, and standing reaches for most current players.

I was listening to the bill simmons over/unders podcast, he's really high on the lakers and thinks they're a lock to be over 47.5 or 48 wins or whatever it is and has them as the #3 seed and...I don't see it. I mean they could do it for sure but if there is anything we have learned about regular season lebron over the past 7 years, particularly in his first season with a team, it is that they do not exceed expectations in the regular season. no way lebron goes hard enough for 82 games for that team to win 50 in a stacked western conference imo
― k3vin k., Saturday, 13 October 2018 23:03 (five years ago) link
it is actually gonna be hard for many teams in the west to break 50 kinda like last year, too many good teams that are gonna beat up on each other
― k3vin k., Saturday, 13 October 2018 23:04 (five years ago) link
Yeah was listening to the same podcast and I was surprised. I mean they can't really break 48 wins with their current interior defence rotation. Are there any speculated trades to help in that area?
They also won't want LeBron defending the 5 and wearing himself down. Really I would have thought that they should be looking to preserve him for a real run next season (w/ a free agent star signing) and for now develop their younger assets, and if they make the playoffs this year it's a bonus.
Rough win calc:
Bucks: 1/2Bulls: 2/2Cavs: 1/2Celtics: 0/2Clippers: 3/4Grizzlies: 2/3Hawks: 2/2Heat: 1/2Hornets: 2/2Jazz: 1/4Kings: 3/4Knicks: 2/2Magic: 2/2Mavericks: 2/3Nets: 2/2Nuggets: 1/3Pacers: 1/2Pelicans: 2/4Pistons: 1/2Raptors: 1/2Rockets: 1/4Sixers: 1/2 Spurs: 3/4Suns: 3/4Timberwolves: 1/4Thunder: 2/3Trailblazers: 2/4Warriors: 1/4Wizards: 1/2
So maybe they are kind of hovering around as a 47 win team but 3 seed? Nahhh
Not that I want it to happen but just wondering what trade would it take to get Mark Gasol on the Lakers? Esp since he can opt out next year. Grizz could tank pretty effectively without him and I would assume noone is interested in Conley really.
