how serious are you about the idea that lebron james has juiced or is juicing?

yeah that guy

micah, Monday, 16 February 2015 12:58 (nine years ago) link

#4 for me, I think he's probably juiced along with all of the Heat during the Big 3 era
but who can really know

Nhex, Monday, 16 February 2015 14:46 (nine years ago) link

obviously they aren't the only kind of PEDs, but I feel like anabolic steroids wouldn't be that common bc aren't the muscle/strength enhancements they facilitate not particularly conducive to speed and agility (especially over time, with increased use)? and those are two of the most essential attributes for any baller

slothroprhymes, Monday, 16 February 2015 15:05 (nine years ago) link

correct me if I'm wrong on that tho. most of my PED understanding comes from the ones that I know were used by baseball players, obvs the vast majority were powerhitters or pitchers and neither of those need to be fast

slothroprhymes, Monday, 16 February 2015 15:07 (nine years ago) link

I can def imagine guys using one or more of the milder amphetamines to kickstart themselves, like after a really intense late night that coincides w/ a back to back, and if MLB considers those PEDs I'm sure the NBA does as well

slothroprhymes, Monday, 16 February 2015 15:11 (nine years ago) link

Weren't a bunch of NFL players busted this year for ritalin 'scrips

, Monday, 16 February 2015 15:16 (nine years ago) link

I've said this in the other thread but the other likely PED candidates are the ones that allow you to recover from injury faster (KOBEEEEEEEE)

, Monday, 16 February 2015 15:17 (nine years ago) link

xp nfl players always say it was like adderall but i believe the actual substance causing the positive test is kept confidential so who knows.

call all destroyer, Monday, 16 February 2015 15:23 (nine years ago) link

i always assumed basketball was a game that relied more on motor skill/finesse than raw strength and that the aspects of the game where more bulk might help, post play on both sides of the ball, aren't as prominent in the current pace&space game as maybe they were ten or so yrs ago. add to this the fact that the dudes who excel at the strongman game are already physically imposing enough naturally that it seems like returns would be diminishing.

also it seems relevant to point out that i think any results from brons current or past years could be explained by his being a young dude with access to cutting edge nutrition and training techniques. add to this the fact that of the major sports basketball is probably the most consistently athletically demanding over the longest continuous period (so the dudes that excel at it are already on another level performance wise) and my skepticism grows.

All that said, i wouldn't be shocked to find anybody juicing in the nba, BC as has been mentioned every time this discush gets rolling - anything that will provide even the most modest advantage (perceived or actual) will be tried by someone

pursuit of happiness (art), Monday, 16 February 2015 15:44 (nine years ago) link

bron was big right out of hs and has stayed more or less fit for his career at least according to my perception. Also we should note that his playing more minutes before 30 than anybody else did catch up with him this season

pursuit of happiness (art), Monday, 16 February 2015 15:45 (nine years ago) link

did not know there were boogie 'roid allegations, am now sad

slothroprhymes, Monday, 16 February 2015 15:58 (nine years ago) link

roids: injury recovery, strength training
speed: game time focus/energy
blood doping: endurance

all sorts of stuff that wld be beneficial for basketball

lag∞n, Monday, 16 February 2015 16:35 (nine years ago) link

my understanding is the downside to roids is decreased endurance but that they are great for the fast burst motions that produce speed and agility (see ben johnson), im sure any clever player or trainer cld figure out how to work them into the mix optimally

lag∞n, Monday, 16 February 2015 16:37 (nine years ago) link

not to mention, especially with today's medical technologies/advances - and whole clinics brazenly pushing forward with it - they're got to be super expensive rarified stuff that the FDA and major sports orgs aren't aware of and don't want to be aware of

and how far is it from "nutrition" these days...

Nhex, Monday, 16 February 2015 16:38 (nine years ago) link

agree tho that injury recovery is the biggest red flag all sorts of guys (kobe) coming back in super human time recently

lag∞n, Monday, 16 February 2015 16:39 (nine years ago) link

yeah thats why the bio passport is the gold standard for testing these days cause u cant rely on knowing every drug someone will just make a new one xp

lag∞n, Monday, 16 February 2015 16:40 (nine years ago) link

I think Billy Simmons mentioned something about this, if not now it at least was rampant in the NBA, back when players didn't know when they'd be drug tested but did know how many times they would be so it was essentially open season after like the 4th test

Abstinence Hawk (frogbs), Monday, 16 February 2015 16:50 (nine years ago) link

re: the injury recovery time thing, was anyone a bit suspicious of the serge ibaka thing in the 13-14 WC finals? he's out the first two games and not expected to return for the series, they get hosed games 1 and 2, then he suddenly returns for 2 games & it is highly beneficial until reality sets in (namely that their coach is scott brooks and they are playing the fucking unstoppable 2013-14 spurs)

slothroprhymes, Monday, 16 February 2015 16:58 (nine years ago) link

er, he returned for the whole series but it only really mattered in games 3 and 4, is what I meant

#2 because I WANT TO BELIEEEEVE.

Hollinger Escape Plan (Leee), Monday, 16 February 2015 18:41 (nine years ago) link

i reckon players get on hgh in high school and college when its important to stand out from their classmates. and then might cycle in the offseason or while coming back from injuries. i doubt theres much ped use during the season, that would be very risky both with getting caught and any side effects.

i guess blood doping could be a thing tho

juiced

moullet, Friday, 27 February 2015 01:40 (nine years ago) link

the possibility doesn't seem farfetched or crazy, but you'd think that there'd have been more rumors floating around. especially with how competitive the league is. sometimes getting an edge means sniping at the enemy from cover.

they were the juicemen

Wade and Westbrook are more suspicious because they were late bloomers, but on the other hand they haven't excused themselves from their teams mid season to go to one of the PED hot spots.
