kevin hope you dont mind this crossover event but ilh needs to know

my three-part plan to fix the NBA:

1) subsidize their primary in-sport rival
2) erect as many barriers as possible for average fans to watch the games
3) bring back mark jackson https://t.co/zCH3UvUn5j pic.twitter.com/w0av40rFi3

well he's not the only one who has posited the idea that NBC or amazon could contract turner to produce the show

espn just contracted out college football games to turner, which has never broadcast college football before, this stuff is all getting really incestuous

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5513081/2024/05/22/college-football-playoff-tnt-sports/

The TNT games will be produced by ESPN and use ESPN broadcasters, but be branded TNT Sports, according to a source with direct knowledge of their plans. TNT could produce ancillary programming around the games, which could include a new show like, “Inside the College Football Playoff.” ESPN will get to choose the first two first-round games before TNT gets to make its selection.

ESPN, WBD Sports and Fox are teaming up for a stand-alone streaming product, named Venu, which will be available to consumers this fall and, according to executives briefed on the plans, will be priced in the $45-$50 per month range.

By working with Warner Bros. Discovery, ESPN is able to keep the entire playoff under the Venu umbrella.

nate jones is probably off wrt to the amazon aspect of it all. but it's extremely easy to read this and envision inside the nba produced by turner on "Venu" attached to espn's nba games

would be pretty funny to see chuck talk about a sport that he doesnt know anything about and hasnt done the reading

lag∞n, Thursday, 23 May 2024 21:52 (three weeks ago) link

That talk show he did with Gayle King went nowhere. I'm not sure if non-NBA people get the appeal.

they've been putting him on ncaa tournament broadcasts for years! how much college basketball do you think he watches

non-nba and non-sports people are different categories. i don't think anyone will be asking him to do political roundtables anymore. but he almost left turner on his own to go announce LIV golf, both espn and NBC are pretty heavily invested in golf. espn will clearly just throw any big personality on TV to talk about every sport these days, stephen a has been doing stuff on first take like talking about football games that never actually happened, saying that a wide receiver who retired two years ago needed to step up etc and the fans of that stuff don't seem to care

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 23 May 2024 22:04 (three weeks ago) link

It would kill me to see him yelling at Stephen A every day, yuck. That seems beneath him. Golf or WNBA or college basketball would be cool.

I think making his own thing is probably the best path... or getting the gang back together somehow. I certainly don't see him moving to LA or Connecticut to work on site at ESPN.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Thursday, 23 May 2024 22:33 (three weeks ago) link

i don’t mean to say he’ll literally end up on first take, i don’t think that would happen. i’m just saying that the ESPN apparatus is very welcoming to big personalities who command attention from the audience whether they know what they’re talking about or not

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 23 May 2024 22:40 (three weeks ago) link

ESPN would have him out there for the biggest SEC football games of the year, because he’s an auburn guy, regardless of whether he has a single informed or intelligent thing to say about i.e. georgia vs alabama

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 23 May 2024 22:42 (three weeks ago) link

yeah SEC football is a good fit

bad news for the mavs, wolves in 6

The Mavericks look like they're gonna win the NBA Finals. Elite defense and elite role players, led by two elite closers in Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. And by the way, Jason Kidd is coaching his ass off these playoffs.

RIP, what a character.

from r/gratefuldead:

"He was at dead & co last year at dodger stadium. Walked straight into GA and disappeared. A man of the people!"

His stat line for Portland in the finals against Philly: 18.5 points, 19 rebounds, 5.2 assist and 3.7 blocks while shooting 54.5% in a six-game series against Philadelphia.

Going to crank some some GD later.

I met bill once when I was 15, I was interning at the blazers corporate office and he swung by. I was introduced to him and he bent all the way over to shake my hand and in his signature bellow he said “Clay! What a name! It suits you!” and then turned his attention to something else law. I’ll never forget it.

Clay, Monday, 27 May 2024 20:16 (three weeks ago) link

rip, 71 too young for anyone but especially for a guy who seemed to enjoy life so much

call all destroyer, Monday, 27 May 2024 21:48 (three weeks ago) link

i remember that robert horry one from the broadcast, untouchable

Clay, Monday, 27 May 2024 22:13 (three weeks ago) link

Walton's peak as a player was really before I knew sports. I kinda remember him being on that later Celtics team but NBA back in those days was hit or miss on TV, heck the playoffs were not even on regular TV at all and were shown on a delay.

I do know that Walton really honked off a lot of 'Merica love it or leave it crowd as I remember if his name came up or when he was early in his broadcast career that dads or various older dudes would sometimes comment on him. Though some of those people I talk about that liked bball were way too much influenced by Bobby Knight for their own good and BK did not like Walton at all.

As the years went on and you see more interview segments to me Walton seemed to me like a pretty genuine dude both in his general humanity, as an athlete and a big fan of the Dead.

Far ye' well big red, listen to the river sing that sweet song to rock you away.

seriously what the fuck is up with Shaq? this is their tribute to Bill Walton and when it's his turn he starts going on about how he use to be mad at Bill for criticizing him then all this nonsense about him being part of Shaq's stupid "Big Man Alliance" and "G14 status" or whatever the fuck that means

I’m not really bummed about Inside ending because it started sucking like even before Shaq came aboard, imo, I blame twitter or something

Dwyane Wade joining Noah Eagle on NBC's men's Olympic coverage.

Hmm, if NBC gets the NBA, Mike Tirico-Wade No. 1 team? 🤔

wade has generally always come off to me as a stiff phony, not optimistic about this direction at all. i think basketball TV is headed into a bad place in the amazon/NBC era
