yeah pretty easily

well, it would be viewed as a plus value contract for sure but he'd still also be seen as a second guard/sixth man type player, the role he was in clearly depressed his value and i don't think that would have changed. keep in mind it's not like there was some frenzy of teams trying to get brunson. the team that was willing to give him a major contract was the one that employed his father

i've also said this a bunch of times including recently but the craziest part is not that they misjudged his value bcuz that does happen even tho in this case it was a pretty spectacular miss -- frankly, i think brunson's production could have been replicated given the amount of possessions that go thru luka. it's that they essentially told him he was replaceable and then didn't even bother replacing him. the leaders among guards in total minutes played for the mavs last year were

1. luka
2. hardaway jr
3. dinwiddie
4. josh green
5. kyrie

until the kyrie panic trade they literally just rolled out there w/ a shooting guard, a salary dump PG, and a second year player who had never done anything in the league, while adding javale and christian wood. just a complete disaster of a strategy

and while the brunson contract was seen as a reach at the time im sure any team in the league wouldve been willing to give him that $55m deal the mavs turned down lol

and tbf likely some of them wouldve given him the ~$100m deal the knicks did but most teams didnt have the cap space and the move to the knicks was seen as a forgone conclusion by that time etc

for sure. there really isn't, like, a representative free market in free agency anymore for a number of reasons. i think it's safe to say that most teams, as well as the public, seemed to value him somewhere in between those contracts.

i also don't think it's unfair to say that while i do buy that the knicks believed brunson was better than what was generally seen, their motivation was as much about having an unbeatable line on an attainable free agent as much as it was, you know, them independently identifying an undervalued talent and prioritizing him

its too bad the knicks cant get out there and tell us the story, because of the tampering
