btw an interesting tidbit towards the end of the hoop collective pod -- windhorst says that the blazers didn't make a trade because they're looking at a "rockets-style" offseason of trying to sign some vets to augment their roster & make a playoff push. i wish joe cronin the best on that endeavor!

i mean they could prob do it, overpaying pretty good players isnt that hard, but is it good

yeah the rockets looking more and more like they're gonna land just outside the play-in which is actively the worst place to end up

have a feeling theres a next step in the rockets plan which is to take one of those overpay salaries and package it with some of their many draft picks the next time a superstar is available, and tbf the blazers could do that too, only problem with this plan from the blazer pov is they dont have the cap space to overpay the pretty good players

my theory is that after three straight seasons of tanking the blazers marketing department is probably at the point of committing sepuku, so the blazers front office decided to make some positive noises about next season just to avoid having to sift through all those resumes to find their replacements.

i think the other thing w/ houston is that they had gotten into, like, laughing stock verging on NBA abyss territory and it did feel like they needed to professionalize their operation in a real way even if it meant paying up to get the 11 seed. i don't think that portland is in the same place, tho they would be in a few years if they kept up this current pace

my guess is simply that cronin senses the team will be sold soon & will be making a play to keep his job, which is always bad news

But I would have liked something bold. A trade of Deandre Ayton, for starters. Although his play has spiked for the better in the past month, his first months in Portland were defined by tardiness and tantrums according to team sources. And there has been an eerie resemblance to Hassan Whiteside, the former Blazers’ center whose statistics looked nice, but had little to no impact on a game. The quicker the Blazers can move off Ayton, the sooner I will believe this franchise is headed in the right direction.
