i think it would be ok to lower it to 60 considering that playing low 70s is pretty standard these days then its like normal resting/minor injuries + one medium injury

i feel like its not being discussed much around the league that zion has totally lost his athleticism idk what the deal is maybe hes just choosing to not jump high or move fast he does look overweight but that never stopped him before

he is def in worse shape than ever before clearly struggling with conditioning out there

again, what we are discussing is a victimless crime, a hypothetical that has happened in the league one time in history, and if the rule were in place at the time the only two people who would remind us of it are named bill (walton and simmons). if embiid wants to win MVP, and I’m not convinced he does this year, he could take fewer games off. it’s not complicated. literally no one is harmed by this rule as it pertains to MVP

the MVP being forced by a league rule to give up caring about winning the MVP is not good, actually

im willing to trade the game limit for changing the name to the best player award

he’s not forced to do anything! he would sit games out with boo boos regardless. and if history is any guide, he wouldn’t be voted MVP anyway. the narrative is against him at this point without even taking into consideration the games played threshold. the system is working. no one who is deserving is being harmed

tbf to embiid he pushed for the mvp last year then he was injured and exhausted in the playoffs, also all the other years he was injured and exhausted in the playoffs

worth considering that not only is it hard for embiid to play 65 games in a season playing 40 minutes in a game is also tough

i’m pretty indifferent about all this but if embiid held on to the >1 point per minute thing while playing 58 games it would have been great to see the zach lowes of the world tie themselves up in knots over it.

I do agree that since the all-nba teams are tied to salary that the games threshold probably shouldn’t apply btw, not that it matters to embiid specifically apart from his resume, the league might want to change that part

to be clear i think its fine to enjoy and care about basketball history i like histories of many types i just dont think its wise to make current decisions for the sake of history, like i think it would be good to reduce the number of games in a season even though it would fuck with the all time records, additionally i dont think awards are really "basketball" theyre some secondary lesser thing that arent that important imho

last word on this unless I am shamefully slandered again but another important part of this debate that I think gets lost sometimes is that when assessing “value” it’s not even as simple as adding up minutes and production, taking off an extra game a week compared to the competition has to have a non-negligible impact on a player’s per-minute production in a positive way. we’re always saying the product would be better if players didn’t have to play so many road back to backs, fewer games, etc, embiid is just an extreme case in point
