seems like the MVP isn’t happening, which is (seriously!) a bummer because this is the year his argument is by far the strongest

i wonder if they'll emergency re-amend the CBA this offseason to eliminate the 65 game rule now that it's clear that it's not actually making anyone play more & will instead just screw up the historical record of the game for a half decade

screwing up the historical record by considering minutes played as a meaningful part of player value?

well for one the metric they're using is games played and not minutes played and secondly it's by putting in a rule that bans players from awards eligibility instead of just letting the voters decide who was deserving as has been the case for the league's history. this point is actually not very difficult to follow

theyre just trying to make the guys play more but it will only work sometimes

guys are playing more but there's zero evidence that the 65 game rule has anything to do with it, the idea came from the right place but it's completely ineffective and offers only downside, they should get rid of it

wow poor rule barely been around for half a season and already people want to fire it

yeah fair enough, ultimately the only thing that will really get the results they want is spacing out the schedule more but they want to do everything but that

i dont really have a problem with the rule but its def the league treating the symptom instead of the disease, too many games

doing this while also having compensation tied to all nba is a pretty big collision of competing priorities imo

spacing the games out would help, and tbf they have already done it some the season is ~10 days longer than it used to be, but if they got to zero back to backs then theyd be on to something

theres still so many back to backs

theres a bunch of guys who just do not play back to backs and the league is all how can we get players to play more

they could try getting rid of travel back to backs for starters

they changed the schedule so that teams sometimes play 2 road games in a row vs the same team but they don't make them back to back, instead the back to backs are always 2 different cities, doesnt make sense

read the average team plays 14 back to backs this year, so if you added three weeks to the season you could prob get rid of them

like later in the season the celtics have a road trip where they play in detroit and chicago on back to back nights, and then they play 2 games in atlanta that are 3 days apart. why

the league is all how can we get featured stars and marquee players to play more. other players not so much.

the players are on the court more this year because there's a skyscraper sized bag with dollar signs printed on it swinging in front of the owners & players faces like a pocket watch

or you could reduce the number of reg season games to 60, make the regular season best record the nba champ, then hold the super playoffs cup to make up the lost games. xp self

not that many players have a big financial incentive to play more basically just the ones who havent made an all nba team but might and are up for a new contract in the next three years

add two expansion teams and play 62 game season home & away vs everyone. the sweet spot

hali really wants all nba cause itll allow him to make tens of millions of dollars over his next contract, but it doesnt matter finically to kat he already signed a five year super max that doesnt even start til next year, tatum made all nba last year so hes set for his next deal

i think players mostly want to play anyway, its the teams who dont want them to, and the teams are right

the league has maybe succeeded in tilting the teams habits a lil via shaming and threats

i'm not talking about incentives i'm talking big picture in that the league has to sign a new TV deal and player salaries derive directly from how much money is in that contract so there is an immense incentive for both owners & players for the league to put its best foot forward this year. i don't think that individual players themselves are thinking about this but if we are to believe what everyone says that load management is a team directive and not a player one then it would follow to me that owners & GMs have stepped in and said that guys need to be on the floor more this year. it also wouldn't surprise me if it was communicated to players thru the union -- which is run by and for the stars anyway -- that it would be in everyone's best interest to get out there and play this year

the in season tourney was the perfect gambit in that it put real but small time money in front of the players to get them to play hard for the bigger bag that will enrich everyone down the line

(or so the league hopes...)

i could see it it makes sense but i kinda think its not happening that way, it seems a lil abstract from the playing games life, ive never heard a player coach gm etc talk about it certainly, it would be nice if everyone cared a lil more about the product tho
