His interview is a lot of saying nothing. He does say at the end that the idea of selling the team is "ridiculous."

if i was becoming hated cause i owned a sports team, fans chanting for me to sell during games and so forth, if id fucked up bad enough to get to that point id just sell, its the right thing to do, who wants to be the guy ruining peoples fun, let someone else do it

also he bought in for ~$300m which is much less than nba teams are worth now so when he sells he can buy himself something nice

First, you'd have to understand that you had fucked up. I don't think that occurs to many (any?) sports team owner.

its silly how buying a sports team is considered a fun thing by the super rich, its like going to a restaurant then deciding that opening a restaurant would be fun, youre already doing the fun part theres only work on the other side

funny thing is if any billionaire wants to pal around with basketball players get in the mix of the team etc can easily do it for a fraction of the cost of buying a team just get courtside season tickets go to all the team events for big wigs meet the players invite them to your white party in the hamptons or whatever, theyll prob like you better than an owner since youre not their boss

i guess is not as good as really owning the shiny object but at least no ones booing you, and there are plenty of shiny object you can get where no one boos you

The categorical mistake a lot of these squidillionaires make is thinking that, because they understood one thing enough to make tons of money at it, they understand, and are good at, everything. To admit that they don't know how to run the sports team they just bought would be admitting that that belief is not true, which is I think pretty threatening.

some owners tbf are a little wiser and go for the hire good people and stay out of their way approach

like the celtics owner wyc (pronounced wick) grousbeck from what i can tell only gets involved in basketball issues if its on the level of trading a star player, and even then its not like hes driving he just wants to be consulted

Not to say sports owners aren't already insanely rich, but I think the steeply escalating values of sports franchises regardless of relative success in the sport is a bigger factor now. What other assets that you can buy only go up and so dramatically without you having to do anything? Even real estate can be cyclical.

Really super rich guys love sports teams in part because they can write off any business losses against their corporate taxes, then turn around and sell the team any time they feel like it for at least double what they paid for it. Plus, a side helping of glamour.

The thing about the McCain trade is that the thought process was a disaster on every level — player eval, timing, negotiation, long term cap/money management, reading how it might affect the locker room. Not to mention the coaching side of it, who very obviously limited and misused this guy, and who was hired and backed by this front office. Like if you just had competent decision making on any of those fronts, this trade doesn’t happen.

The decision to trade McCain now, the way they went about it, and the return they got really highlights the areas of top to bottom organizational brainrot. Just an all-time fuck up, I will never get over it, and I will bet anything that it continues to look worse and worse over time.
