stashing assets for the 2023 nba offseason

regardless of what dame wants, it makes no sense for a non-contending team to acquire him. he's too old and too expensive. the stuff about the thunder, jazz, spurs etc having assets was always transparently bogus leverage jockeying thru the media

once you look at the contenders in the league it's a bunch of teams who are not going to trade for dame -- milwaukee, boston, cleveland, denver, memphis, sacramento, golden state, dallas etc

you're basically left w/ the usual suspects that, aside from miami, we already know have declined to make real offers for dame, or simply have no assets to do so -- philly, brooklyn, phoenix, clippers, lakers

if portland's plan is to drag this out & hope for a better offer they're basically gambling on like...

-- the nets having a really good season and feeling like they could push to the finals
-- the knicks having a bad season and panicking about their situation
-- the sixers being a disaster and putting maxey on the table (it's unclear to me why this would inspire the blazers)
-- the pelicans being a disaster and david griffin needing to save his job (would dame agree to a trade to new orleans?)

there's only a finite number of teams, it's not like there's a mystery bidder in another country who is gonna come in here and save the day. so idk. maybe it all works out but to me the math isn't adding up

fwiw I think calling dame oft-injured isn’t accurate at all. He missed a lot of time two years ago when he needed abdomen surgery to correct a nagging problem he’d been playing through for years. Since then he’s only really missed time for wear and tear issues and obvious tanking reasons, he’s much closer to an iron man type than in and out of the lineup

Clay, Tuesday, 12 September 2023 18:13 (eight months ago) link

either way it's prob prudent to assume the health arrow is going in the other direction w/ someone of his size and age

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 September 2023 18:17 (eight months ago) link

is herro even a positive asset on that contract

― lag∞n, Tuesday, September 12, 2023 1:37 PM (forty minutes ago)

i think ppl are underrating the fact that he signed his deal pre-cap spike ... i don't think 4/120 is unreasonable for herro when a player like desmond bane signed for 5/207 and all the NBA reporter guys were like, well yeah that's gonna be the going rate for a young core piece in the new cap era. one has to assume that if bane got that kinda deal then tyrese maxey will be asking for the exact same thing. even if he doesn't get any better -- and i do think he's improved every year -- a 25 year old herro making $30m in 2026 shouldn't be unmanageable when there will be plenty of players, including non-all stars, making well into the 40-50 range per year. if you're a team that likes herro, that number should be fine. some teams won't like him, which i get too. but the contract, looking forward from my POV, seems like it will be okay.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 September 2023 18:23 (eight months ago) link

I’m past the point of having a real take on what the blazers are up to. Cronin seems high on his own stink, thinking he can out-clever everyone (pat riley being one of the everyones, hubris is cool), meanwhile the clock keeps ticking. Bringing dame into camp will bring a circus nobody needs and a distraction from the obvious post-dame way forward and is the worst way to start the scoot regime. Actually playing dame while waiting for “the better offer” (??) risks injury to the old guy you want to trade, wastes development time, and could also end up winning the team a bunch of games they don’t want to win for tanking reasons! There’s no real upside to it. Another ~25th pick in 2029? Rad. Let’s all move on.

Clay, Tuesday, 12 September 2023 18:24 (eight months ago) link

that actually sounds like a real take clay & it's one that i agree with

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 September 2023 18:24 (eight months ago) link

there was actually a tweet from marc spears or someone like that that slipped under the radar last week, saying that the heat & blazers haven't been in contact recently but are going to start talking again when training camp picks up in a few weeks. i think what's gone unstated over the last 2 months -- bcuz the league and its media members all benefit from the idea that every team in the NBA is poring over every possible dame lillard trade scenario for 24 hours a day every day -- is that NBA front offices actually do take summer vacations. i'm still optimistic that something gets hammered out once ppl in portland and miami get back to work

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 September 2023 18:29 (eight months ago) link

I do ftr think the ownership being totally blinkered and checked out has led to something of a rudderless ship. Why is Chauncey Billups the coach of this team? He’s the guy you want tutoring the 19 year old phenom genius? Is he even a coach? There doesn’t seem to be a voice or vision from Allen et al, and the franchise may tread some painful water until they’re forced to relinquish the team

Clay, Tuesday, 12 September 2023 18:29 (eight months ago) link

oh yeah the owner needed to step in two years ago and say "we're not offering dame an insane massive extension and actually we're going to trade him." the franchise would inarguably be in a better place. but... yeah

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 September 2023 18:31 (eight months ago) link

yeah all recent inexplicable blazers stuff can be traced back to having ownership that just doesnt give a shit

lag∞n, Tuesday, 12 September 2023 18:55 (eight months ago) link

idk why she just wont sell maybe thinks team prices will continue to increase

lag∞n, Tuesday, 12 September 2023 18:57 (eight months ago) link

yeah if you’ve got an inherently rare asset that’s just gonna accrue value while you sit on it and let it rot why dump it for what you can get now

Clay, Tuesday, 12 September 2023 19:02 (eight months ago) link

what actually may force their hand sooner than later is the arena is nearing 30 years old and really showing it’s age. They either need to gut it and dropping a zillion into a reconstruction or build a new one and her brother was big into not making tax payers do that shit for his ass

Clay, Tuesday, 12 September 2023 19:04 (eight months ago) link

could be waiting on the big expansion payout that everyone thinks is coming

lag∞n, Tuesday, 12 September 2023 19:04 (eight months ago) link

I don't understand what leverage Lillard has. They have him under contract. They have his replacement on the roster. They have a poor man's version of Herro on their roster already. They have no real mandate to win this year. I find it super hard to believe that he'll show up and be a bad influence. I don't think he's capable of pulling a Harden. And it's hard to be a media distraction given that no one pays attention to Portland in the first place.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Tuesday, 12 September 2023 19:20 (eight months ago) link

well lillard has been the story of the nba for the last two months despite being nominally in portland. It’s drama, it involves a finals team that’s in a glamorous place, the hounds will keep at it

Clay, Tuesday, 12 September 2023 19:22 (eight months ago) link

I really doubt the hounds will keep up with it once there are actual NBA storylines to report on.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Tuesday, 12 September 2023 19:31 (eight months ago) link

idk espn is on 24 hours a day

lag∞n, Tuesday, 12 September 2023 19:41 (eight months ago) link

i think portland can continue to hold out if they want to it wont be that bad just not sure if theres any point, but i can see waiting til the trade deadline i guess

last year on xmas day -- the single most visible day of regular season games of the season -- woj dropped the first report that harden was looking to go back to houston. for a lot of "fans," trade rumors are actually more interesting & consumable than real live basketball games. on the contrary, if anything i would expect the dame drama to increase to a fever pitch when the NBA is back on TV. this is why i said earlier that the entire NBA machine has needed to keep up the charade that there are dame lillard trade talks happening during a time when front offices are more or less on vacation

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 September 2023 19:54 (eight months ago) link

the degree to which dame is willing to be unpleasant is definitely an unknown. but his leverage derives from the fact that, at the end of the day, joe cronin needs to improve the blazers via the picks & players he would get in a return from a dame trade much sooner than dame lillard needs the salary he would be docked by not showing up. or to put it another way -- the clock on dame's savings account is running a lot slower than the one on joe cronin's job

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 September 2023 19:57 (eight months ago) link

It would be good for them to win this season given that they don't have their draft picks and it would be a nice carrot for their poor fans, but I think they're pretty clearly a lottery team either way. They certainly could get a better deal at the deadline, though with every passing day they risk Lillard injuring himself by rapping too hard or whatever. Are Blazers fans clamoring for the deal to get done?

Did last year's Harden rumor affect the 76ers at all? It was annoying and typical Harden bullshit, but they played well before and after, Harden had a great season, they're quite familiar with his tactics, and they still want to keep him anyway.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Tuesday, 12 September 2023 21:56 (eight months ago) link

They certainly could get a better deal at the deadline

yeah i wouldn't assume this to be the case. it's possible but not a certainty

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 September 2023 22:18 (eight months ago) link

i think you have to keep in mind that dame is basically on two contracts -- this year and next year at not so insane salaries before the subsequent two years where he jumps into the $60m per year range. so these first two seasons are extremely valuable -- he almost certainly will not have plus value in those final two years, so the first two seasons are essentially what you're paying for in this trade. which means that lost games next season are actively eating away at his trade value

of course teams, esp contending ones, don't care all that much about december and january. but the trade deadline is 70% of the way into the season. even accepting the fact that we just saw a team make the finals from the play in spot, those 55ish games of not having dame should factor into how teams asses his trade value. they're not meaningless. the blazers might be right that a feeding frenzy would occur at the trade deadline and the offers would be better bcuz of that regardless of the fact that teams would be getting a half a season less than they would be now. but if that feeding frenzy doesn't materialize and it's still the same cast of characters in there as now, it would stand to figure that the offers will only get worse

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 September 2023 22:28 (eight months ago) link

like... what if the current moment actually represents the nadir of tyler herro's value? if he comes out smoking hot next season looking really motivated and healthy and is being talked about as a 6th man of the year candidate again... that wouldn't help portland's leverage at all. there's just a lot of variables out there that they would be hoping mostly fall their way

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 September 2023 22:31 (eight months ago) link

i assume portland is making a big wager that dame ends up increasingly frustrated being sidelined on fake injuries or just playing like 25 mpg on a team that's trying to lose and decides he'll accept getting shipped to whatever eastern contender that finds a way to ship out the motherlode

Clay, Tuesday, 12 September 2023 22:36 (eight months ago) link

which as you said earlier, who the hell is that even and what can they offer that miami can't? ultimately very curious why a third team hasn't come in to offer to take in herro for whatever, he'd make some real sense on one of the okc/utah/etc teams that are so asset rich and can't sit on the gold mine forever

Clay, Tuesday, 12 September 2023 22:38 (eight months ago) link

Are the Heat better off if the trade goes through?

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Tuesday, 12 September 2023 23:24 (eight months ago) link

theyve got a team that made the finals twice and needs to get over the hump, theyre not sacrificing any of their window by taking on the old dame since jimmy is old too, agree with dame that its the perfect spot for him

lag∞n, Tuesday, 12 September 2023 23:44 (eight months ago) link

and dame is a great fit rosterwise

lag∞n, Tuesday, 12 September 2023 23:46 (eight months ago) link

i think theyd prob be really good but they also could collapse in a pile of injuries decrepitude and shallowness

lag∞n, Tuesday, 12 September 2023 23:46 (eight months ago) link

hard to know exactly when these guys are gonna fall off, if neither do this year then they'd be really good

ciderpress, Wednesday, 13 September 2023 00:12 (eight months ago) link

there's been a lot of posts today and sorry if this has been covered but isn't the flipside of the portland stuff the fact that miami isn't going anywhere as a trade partner?

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 13 September 2023 00:15 (eight months ago) link

that does seem true

lag∞n, Wednesday, 13 September 2023 00:57 (eight months ago) link

I mean certainly if we can find a way to tie this into a player empowerment narrative that isn’t totally embarrassing *and* just happens to benefit the miami heat we have to run with it ;)

k3vin k., Wednesday, 13 September 2023 03:32 (eight months ago) link

from the perspective of a lackey like marc spears I suppose dropping cryptic hints that dame (who it just turns out I’d love to secure an exclusive sitdown with for andscape) is destined to land in miami (who my puppetmasters would love to continue to be relevant for the next several years) makes sense. as it turns out the blazers ownership seems to feel differently which is why the deal which was supposedly a lock two months ago has yet to materialize

k3vin k., Wednesday, 13 September 2023 03:49 (eight months ago) link

seems like the simplest explanation is that the blazers aren’t crazy about the deal and they feel like the market for dame might improve. a lot can happen over the course of the first couple of months of the season, someone tears an ACL, someone demands a trade... maybe it’s a bit of wishful thinking on their part, but evidently their tolerance for “getting uncomfortable” is higher than people thought
