I think he’ll do a draymond type deal

nobody respects the chair (Spottie), Saturday, 5 August 2023 02:14 (two years ago)

Yeah, the thing I've been reading is that if Klay takes paycut, the Warriors can still keep him and come in under the second apron. Whether that's the FO floating the idea to the press as a negotiating tactic, I dunno.

Albert Canoe (Leee), Wednesday, 9 August 2023 20:20 (two years ago)

I mean at some point every player not named Steph will need to take a paycut or adjust expectations if they want to keep this core together. Draymond did this, I presume Klay will too - and the way Klay can negotiate is on an extra player option year like Dray.

I do expect that no extension will be signed before the off season though like Dray - I don't think GS wants to make the same mistake they did with Poole on Klay's next deal and will play the year out in case he regresses further or gets injured again. He should also understand that if he cares about actually winning, keeping his and Dray's contracts reasonable allows for them to continue to sign dudes like CP3 or multiple high end role players to keep the team in contention.

octobeard, Wednesday, 9 August 2023 21:56 (two years ago)

if they sign klay to the same deal as dray theyd be ~16m below the second apron with only 11 players under contract so even adding a midlevel guy would be dicey

theyre on the hook for $160 next year + $24m for klay = $184, 2nd apron is $182 this year assume 10% increase for next is $200m

https://hoopshype.com/salaries/golden_state_warriors/

of course theres always moves to be made trades letting rookie contract guys go etc

lag∞n, Thursday, 10 August 2023 14:03 (two years ago)

I was under the impression they could walk away from or renegotiate CP3 next year too. Also wouldn't the cap go up a bit too? They might be in a tough spot to resign Kuminga though

octobeard, Thursday, 10 August 2023 18:07 (two years ago)

yeah cap goes up but theyre so far over it it doesnt matter, and you cant renegotiate or cut contracts theyre on the hook for cp3s ~30m, i mean they could do a buyout with him but theyd end up paying almost the full amount anyway

lag∞n, Thursday, 10 August 2023 18:12 (two years ago)

maybe they could stretch his contract not sure what the current deal with that is

lag∞n, Thursday, 10 August 2023 18:18 (two years ago)

None of his salary for the 24-25 season is guaranteed

Chyiv Kyiv (Fetchboy), Thursday, 10 August 2023 22:57 (two years ago)

ah shit my bad, i blame the website for not having that color coded

lag∞n, Thursday, 10 August 2023 23:01 (two years ago)

if they resign klay cutting cp3 next year wouldnt really help them get any more guys as theyd still be over the cap, however trading cp3 + something during the season could, particularly considering teams will be trying to get under the second apron for next year

lag∞n, Thursday, 10 August 2023 23:07 (two years ago)

four weeks pass...

Buh?

"I do expect [Chris Paul] to start. I think it's like 5 minute spurts... I think they're gonna try it... This isn't an opinion, this is just what I'm hearing."@MarcJSpears on CP3 possibly being a starter on the Warriors

might as well trade for harden and bring in derek fisher as an assistant coach.

nobody respects the chair (Spottie), Friday, 15 September 2023 23:32 (two years ago)

it would be funny if bob myers was the one person shutting down all the bad ideas and now he’s gone

call all destroyer, Friday, 15 September 2023 23:52 (two years ago)

We need a guy to play garbage minutes and be tall, I'm into it

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Saturday, 16 September 2023 16:53 (two years ago)

At this point I'd trust Trayce Jackson Davis and Usman Garuba more for those minutes.

Chyiv Kyiv (Fetchboy), Saturday, 16 September 2023 16:58 (two years ago)

I think one or both of those guys will spend a lot of time in Santa Cruz this year.

Lol, thank god. Can't believe all the posts I've seen in the past week from delusional dubs fans talking about how he'd be a perfect signing to provide defense against Jokic and AD in the playoffs.

Interesting article on Klay extension talks with respect to the team's and league's cap situation (the numbers are assuming that the roster is filled out with vet minimums and Paul is moved): https://theathletic.com/4882568/2023/09/25/warriors-klay-thompson-extension-talks-training-camp/

Current league projection of a 4.2 percent cap increase
Cap number: $142,000,000
Tax number: $172,000,000
Second apron estimate: $190,522,052
Available money for Thompson: $42,070,059

5 percent cap increase
Cap number: $142,822,050
Tax number: $173,588,700
Second apron estimate: $191,625,000
Available money for Thompson: $43,136,388

10 percent cap increase
Cap number: $149,623,100
Tax number: $181,823,400
Second Apron estimate: $200,750,000
Available money for Thompson: $51,958,432

Expectation is that the salary cap bump is probably going to be somewhere in the 5-10% range, and because that's still in the air, the deal probably isn't going to be finalized for a while.

Meanwhile...

Free agent F Rudy Gay has agreed on a one-year deal with the Golden State Warriors, Sam Permut of @RocNationSports tells ESPN. Gay will compete for team’s open roster spot in camp. This will be his 18th NBA season.

How's everybody feeling about this season?

I'm optimistic that the added offensive dimensions of CP3 and Saric will help get them to the top 3 in the west. Postseason success will as always depend on health and whether Klay and CP3 burn out again in the playoffs. Hoping at least one of Kuminga and Moody can make a third year leap but I'm assuming they're 9th and 10th on the depth chart for now so they're gonna have to earn their minutes. I guess Draymond's ankle sprain is good news for JK . Wouldn't be surprised if there's a roster shakeup before the trade deadline.

It's gonna be an interesting season! At least they're starting off with better vibes than last year.

Chyiv Kyiv (Fetchboy), Sunday, 1 October 2023 23:23 (two years ago)

I’m not as optimistic but I agree it will be an interesting season! Saric is a good pickup. Not sure how much Paul has left in the tank…

the Howard rumors + Rudy signing are a bit concerning wrt Dunleavy but I’m not totally up on their cap situation or w/e so I don’t really know what they have to work with. Just… sign fewer guys born in the 80s, please

brimstead, Sunday, 1 October 2023 23:52 (two years ago)

Poole and DiVincenzo gave them a lot of minutes. Paul will help with playmaking but I think the second unit will struggle to score.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Monday, 2 October 2023 16:29 (two years ago)

its more like the bench units in the early years, slow the game down and hope to keep it even for when the main guys come back. wayy too much variance with poole last year.

im talking myself into this team and a lot of it has to do with my belief in a kuminga breakout season

Jonathan Kuminga in the preseason:

26.0 PPG
5.7 RPG
54.5% FG
47.1% 3PT

yeah he cld def change the math for the whole team best version of him is exactly what they need

lag∞n, Monday, 16 October 2023 18:51 (two years ago)

wild that he just turned 21 the other day

Chyiv Kyiv (Fetchboy), Monday, 16 October 2023 18:56 (two years ago)

I hope he pans out - it's likely they sign him after the end of next season to a long term near max deal if he balls out.

octobeard, Monday, 16 October 2023 19:04 (two years ago)

i like the rotation:

- curry
- klay
- wiggins
- dray
- loon

- cp3 (old, probably cooked, but hes the opposite of poole, raises the floor lowers the ceiling)
- kuminga (all things pointing to a breakout season, but will kerr trust him when it matters)
- moody (just seems like the perfect pro, solid all around no major weakness)
- gp2 (coming into the season fully healthy should be good, a little worried he wont play with the starters much, which is where he really shines imo)
- saric (slow but smart, can stretch the floor, should fill the bjelica role that they were missing last year)

- cory joseph

- podz
- trace jackson davis
- garuba

pretty versatile but i still think they need a big to eat up ten minutes here or there in the regular season.

last season the bench was:

- poole (unhappy and helping the other team on way too many nights)
- kuminga (2nd year still figuring it out, looked great 2nd half of season w wiggs out)
- moody (see above, but proved himself to be trustworthy in the playoffs)
- jamychel green (looked like a nice signing but he was cooked and had like 4 good games all year, currently unsigned, prob done in the nba)
- wiseman (team was like league worst in his minutes, currently fighting wit
- iggy (played like 1.5 games)
- anthony lamb (out of the league)
- ryan rollins (rookie, prob wont make it in the league)
- patrick baldwin jr (rookie, might stick around in the league idk)
- ty jerome (better than expected and earn a 2/5 deal with the cavs)
- gp2 (hurt)

infinite wiggles (Spottie), Monday, 16 October 2023 20:59 (two years ago)

Yeah it's looking like a much better bench, and there's optimism that podz and TJD can contribute far more meaningful minutes than the rookies we've drafted the past 2 years could during their inaugural seasons.

octobeard, Monday, 16 October 2023 21:36 (two years ago)

forgot to finish my wiseman point that hes fighting w bagley for backup minutes on a young/bad team.

infinite wiggles (Spottie), Monday, 16 October 2023 22:13 (two years ago)

Trey Lance or Wiseman - who's the bigger bust? Both seem to have eerily similar backgrounds (covid era picks who had a dearth of experience post high school), were top 2/3 picks, and professional career paths on massively downward trajectories laced with injury laden disappointment.

Were these dudes massively unlucky, or hit the jackpot and made a few million more than their true talent was able to express in a normal non-pandemic year?

octobeard, Tuesday, 17 October 2023 18:06 (two years ago)

Kinda want to open a poll for this one lol

octobeard, Tuesday, 17 October 2023 18:06 (two years ago)

Bagley might be bigger bust than either of those guys given that he's had a lot of play time and showed pretty conclusively that he's mediocre.

Wiseman probably doesn't have it but there's no shame in falling behind Duren in the depth chart.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Tuesday, 17 October 2023 18:50 (two years ago)

both number two picks similar type of guys feel like bagely might be better just cause he has some actual basketball skills tho not sure theyre enough to really make a difference

lag∞n, Tuesday, 17 October 2023 18:55 (two years ago)

tho bagley was picked ahead of luka where wiseman was ahead of lamelo
