it’s basically saying that he’s properly valued on his current deal which i’m not sure i’d agree with tho in reality any player who isn’t taking a raise on their next contract is admitting to some degree that their value is less than it was the last time they signed. so i guess that would line up more w what i think of zinger but overall the number seems quite high for him
― J0rdan S., Monday, 26 June 2023 15:33 (eleven months ago) link
the one issue i see with the heat & blazers is just that, while i think herro + 3 firsts should have real value across the league, portland is one of the worst roster fits for herro of any team — maybe the worst, as a team that won’t be trying to win & is already overloaded w/ scoring guards. so the blazers either have to find other stuff they value on the heat’s roster, or, more realistically i think, the two teams would have to find a third team willing to give up a pick or young player at a diff position for herro. i don’t think it’s impossible — esp w/ a player of dame’s status the league seems to collectively figure these trades out when push comes to shove— but it does make the deal more complicated
i think the heat only have two firsts they can trade

but still they should trade kat #tradekat
― lag∞n, Monday, June 26, 2023 9:03 AM (one hour ago) bookmarkflaglink
I don't get the sense it's happening before the season, obviously KAT was out most of last year so there's a feeling it would be selling low. I think they still want to see if it can work w/Rudy and KAT.
however, it's hard not to read signing Naz as an insurance policy if they want to blow it up, trade KAT, and rebuild around Ant and Jaden (apparently there were tons of offers coming in for Jaden that were rebuffed).
I suppose they correctly assume that Gobert is untradeable at this point, and if we're talking about Naz and where his skills overlap, it's definitely with KAT and not Rudy.
the weird thing about Connelly is that I actually think the rest of the stuff he's done aside from Gobert ("other than than, how did you like the play, Mrs. Lincoln?") has been pretty savvy and seems to fit what I thought he was going to bring - drafting well, identifying good deals on the margins). Like the deal to get rid of D-Lo (Mike Conley, NAW, and 3 second rounders) was great, people seem to love their deal to move up for Leonard Miller, signing Kyle Anderson on a good contract. And, obviously, even though we didn't keep him, identifying Walker Kessler, Jr. as being way better than people thought
that's all the stuff I assumed he would do, which makes the Gobert deal even more frustrating because it takes the tools that Connelly needs to do the things he's good at (making good draft picks, using resources to make smart non-blockbuster moves to improve the roster).
I still wonder how much was driven by Lore and A-Rod.

suspect the rudy trade was more of an ownership move than it was connellys doing fwiw
― lag∞n, Monday, 26 June 2023 15:39 (eleven months ago) link
it’s prob true that connelly got a mandate from new ownership to “contend,” which if that means consistently make the playoffs isn’t crazy given where KAT is in his career. and from what ppl have always said the connelly front office decided that the way to maximize KAT was to move him off 5 — maybe once the deal was getting worked out ownership pushed to close it & the wolves threw in more than they needed to, but i think it’s a bit of a fantasy to picture a rod coming in and saying “ok great now let’s go get rudy gobert come hell or high water.” i just think it was a big misevaluation on connelly’s parti also don’t think gobert is untradable per se, just that the return would be so light compared to what they sent out that he’s kinda untradable from a PR perspective. he also is prob a better fit w ant than KAT is

connelly drafted nurkic, jokic, juan hernangomez in the lottery two years into jokic’s career, traded another lottery pick (donovan mitchell) for trey lyles… i wouldn’t discount the idea that the man just really likes bigs and got out over his skis on this one

it was entirely predictable but also funny that the two teams who went all in on going big last offseason are now having their summers defined by whether they can trade one of those bigs to balance out their rosters

ESPN Sources: The Hawks are finalizing a trade to send F/C John Collins to the Jazz for Rudy Gay and a future second-round pick. Atlanta was entering the area that no first-round playoff team desires, the second apron. The deal puts Atlanta now below the luxury tax and gives them flexibility to extend Dejounte Murray, Saddiq Bey and Onyeka Okongwu. The deal to acquire Collins delivers the Jazz a versatile forward to play alongside All-Star Lauri Markkanen and All-Rookie center Walker Kessler. The Hawks and Jazz have discussed numerous iterations of the deal for over a year.— Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) June 26, 2023

ainge knows the trade market better than me so i’ll fall back but it seems like a real passion project to acquire a guy who basically played with a sign reading “please trade for this guy — hawks mgmt” taped to his back for 2 years with the goal of trading him again for more value. i wouldn’t put it past ainge but even when collins was playing well nobody wanted him. that said the bar to clear for flipping him for more value than they gave up is basically on the floor

yeah you’re probably right. they must have exhausted other options for that cap space & decided this was the best move. i just don’t buy the idea that they’ve acquired a versatile frontcourt piece to pair with their two stars or whatever such nonsense

i can't say i buy that either but he's not untalented and i think they may just want to take a shot at rehabbing his value

i thought bey looked good for the hawks last year. this roster construction — two guards, two centers, everyone else — makes a lot more sense, even if the talent itself still doesn’t give me tons of hope that they can be more than first round cannon fodder

Remember how often teams have cited the "repeater tax" as the reason they had to cut salary when they weren't even on year 1 of paying the tax? The dreaded "second Apron" is going to justify a lot of cost-cutting moves for teams that were never going that high in the tax anyway.— Nate Duncan (@NateDuncanNBA) June 26, 2023

depends on if they want to send dame to where he wants
it helps ease the pain a bit that Miami doesn't play against the blazers in the west. not sure how the heat can match salaries without tossing in end-of-bench players the blazers don't really want. and their picks are consistently in the non-lottery tier.

Chief among those gains was an expansion of Basketball Related Income, which defines the revenue pie used to determine the share players receive. For the first time since the inception of the salary cap system 40 years ago, team and league licensing revenue will be included in the BRI calculation. This is expected to add roughly $160 million to BRI for the 2023-24 season and should grow annually.BRI will be expanded further with respect to the treatment of complimentary tickets, team watch parties, barter expenses, plaza naming rights and equity transactions. These changes are projected to add an additional $90 million to BRI for a total of $250 million next season, according to someone familiar with the CBA term sheet who was not authorized to speak publicly. The previous CBA guaranteed players between 49% and 51% of BRI, and the players received 51% each season except for 2020-21 due to the impact of COVID-19. In the new CBA, players are expected to receive 51% of BRI throughout the agreement under the negotiated formula for “forecasted BRI.” The next NBA TV contract will greatly impact league revenue and player contracts, but players are currently projected to earn between a total of $45 billion and $50 billion in salaries and benefits during the seven-year term of the CBA.
― J0rdan S., Monday, 26 June 2023 19:13 (eleven months ago) link
a lot of the stuff the second apron is preventing won’t result in players losing money, i don’t think, so much as it will result in talent being more evenly distributed throughout the league. which is why to me it’s more a question of whether this CBA is good for the consumer
― J0rdan S., Monday, 26 June 2023 19:20 (eleven months ago) link
um, parity* not parody tho let’s see how close we get to the latter…..
when the cap bumped and they didn’t smooth it there was a handful or two of guys who really really benefited but i don’t think there was much of a negative ripple effect for the rest of the union. the real issue was that it paved the way for durant to GS which made the league pretty boring to watch for three seasons. i’d expect this to be kinda similar in reverse — there will prob be a handful or two free agents who don’t see the kinda offers they want — but for the union in total it will all come out in the wash. and then we’ll see what it does for the “product”
