Really curious to see how this offseason plays out. After that Lakers series it's hard to see the core 3 getting another chip. Dray and Klay are both going into the last year of their contracts. I'd like to see them get more serious about Kuminga's development and make him a starter.

Chyiv Kyiv (Fetchboy), Sunday, 14 May 2023 22:49 (three years ago)

The core is still strong imo. Klay had a bad series and currys threes weren’t falling. Two of those games were nailbiters and I think they match up better vs the nuggets then the lakers. Poole turning into an extremely detrimental player killed them too. I think they’ve got another run but they have to get creative w these contracts and trades to bring in some more vets and size

Spottie, Sunday, 14 May 2023 22:53 (three years ago)

All the cap issues spelled out in one place: https://theathletic.com/4530603/2023/05/18/warriors-salary-cap-roster-sign-trade/

They don't have an MLE
They can't receive anyone from a sign and trade
They're already past the second luxury tax threshold with just 10 players signed on the roster (excluding Draymond and DiVincenzo's options, but including their upcoming FRP)
The new CBA doesn't fully kick in until the off season after this one, and the cap is expected to rise again, so there's a narrow pathway for them to be able to extend Dray and Klay (if they combine for $37 million), keep Poole, and avoid the most stringent penalties

Cashews Everything Around Me (Leee), Thursday, 18 May 2023 15:10 (three years ago)

All those restrictions are in place largely for the purpose of preventing dynasties from perpetuating themselves. Finally seems to be kicking in with the dubs, who lucked into a great core at low cost and have ridden it as deep into the luxury tax as anyone could have imagined.

I guess we're going to find out just how much the veterans lean on him when it comes to Klay's and Dray's extensions.

Cashews Everything Around Me (Leee), Tuesday, 30 May 2023 16:56 (three years ago)

apparently lacob might put his son in there? i guess the dubs have won enough titles to last a lifetime

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 30 May 2023 17:08 (three years ago)

i've heard a couple times it will be dunleavy jr. if internal

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 30 May 2023 17:21 (three years ago)

i think its gonna be dunleavy and kirk lacob yeah

is kirk lacob a failson or ?

dont really follow warriors politics but yeah this does seem pretty ominous for them

lag∞n, Tuesday, 30 May 2023 20:04 (three years ago)

Supposedly Lacob, Son of Lacob was the one who brought GPii in, which was probably enough to convince Joe that he'd be better than Bob

Chyiv Kyiv (Fetchboy), Tuesday, 30 May 2023 23:33 (three years ago)

i think he was a fine GM gm but he was clearly very good at managing the human side of things, the egos, etc.

Spottie, Tuesday, 30 May 2023 23:36 (three years ago)

IIRC the Hawks also have an owner's son in a key management role. are there other teams as well?

that's not my post, Tuesday, 30 May 2023 23:38 (three years ago)

The failsons are cooking up a Poole for Trae trade

Chyiv Kyiv (Fetchboy), Tuesday, 30 May 2023 23:55 (three years ago)

I'm a Mets fan and a failson running the team has gotta be one of the most infuriating things to endure as a sports fan.

SA, Wednesday, 31 May 2023 14:29 (three years ago)

dray and klay, what do you think spottie, without myers there to balance all the egos who stays who goes over the next 14 mos?

as a non-dubs fan who has enjoyed having such a likable crew as the dynasty of record, it is really hard and sad to imagine breaking up the splash bros. dray on the other hand seems destined to pursue a role elsewhere and prob end up a disappointing albatross contract, though i would be happy for him if he can find a team that has the scorers for him to complement.

from the team side of things, they really need poole to start next year blazing hot, get his contract out from underwater so that its a tradeable asset

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Wednesday, 31 May 2023 14:56 (three years ago)

think poole is prob movable now but they wouldnt get much for him

lag∞n, Wednesday, 31 May 2023 16:04 (three years ago)

its really hard to guess what they will do. if dray and klay take team friendly deals then they're likely riding this out together til the end of currys contract. i think joe will eat the big bill. but if they are demanding max and not budging i think theyll both just play on their current contracts for this season then move on? that might be risky given their ages to not take a longer deal now, tho. my guess is they both take 3 year deals around 25-30 per and that gets them locked in and the team under the 2nd apron. poole... yeah i think hes movable now, i would lean towards keeping him but only if the behinds the scenes relationships are repairable. if the relationships are friend then hes gotta go and sooner than later, cant start the season with bad vibes or its like a lakers westbrook situation from the beginning of this season. i think bob was a buffer between kerr and lacob too, interested to see how that dynamic plays out now, ownership might start demanding more playing time for the kids and kerr could leave, idk. everyone knows they have a shot every year while curry is at this level so hes kind of holding it all together with string right now.

Spottie, Wednesday, 31 May 2023 16:50 (three years ago)

thanks for thoughtful response, that all tracks to me. obv curry on another team is inconceivable but it's gonna be depressing if they can't keep a competitive team around him for the remainder of his god-tier years, however many they will be

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Wednesday, 31 May 2023 17:18 (three years ago)

i thikn dray wouldve been gone a while ago if not for curry, who understands how important he is to the team warts and all

Spottie, Wednesday, 31 May 2023 17:39 (three years ago)

it's gonna be depressing if they can't keep a competitive team around him for the remainder of his god-tier years, however many they will be

I feel part of that might be Curry's undoing too - if he insists on keeping say Klay around past his due date, he would be shooting his foot in the process. Probably one of the better ways to sustain is trading one or two of the expensive current players (Poole, Klay, Dray and Wiggins) for youth pieces, depth and to get under the apron. Steph is going to continue to be super-maxed until he retires.

If the dubs can somehow keep Klay and Dray on super team friendly deals, part with Poole and get some real depth back, they got maybe 2-3 years left at maybe contending. After that? Retirement tour?

How many of y'all think LeBron arrives in a crazy trade this year or next?

octobeard, Wednesday, 31 May 2023 17:55 (three years ago)

there seems to be a lot of smoke around that lebron rumor. but i dont really see it happening. its really a bummer that klay flamed out in the lakers series cos he had a great season overall and a stellar 2nd half of the seaosn in particular.

Spottie, Wednesday, 31 May 2023 18:05 (three years ago)

I'm very skeptical about the Lebron rumors -- can he even fit onto the team just looking at salary?

Cashews Everything Around Me (Leee), Wednesday, 31 May 2023 18:21 (three years ago)

would have to move wiggins and poole to match i think. i think if it were to happen it would be after next season

I guess you could call Dunleavy a failson, actually.

Cashews Everything Around Me (Leee), Saturday, 17 June 2023 02:22 (three years ago)

lol have you looked at mike dunleavy sr's track record as a player and a coach?

call all destroyer, Saturday, 17 June 2023 02:33 (three years ago)

Dunleavy thing is funny cos the whole (old school) fanbase hates him

Spottie, Saturday, 17 June 2023 03:06 (three years ago)

xp ya more like the successful son of a faildad. I
i was amazed to see that jr’s playing career was 15 years - I knew he hung around for awhile but damn. i always think of him and troy murphy being the tools of the pacers’ post-malice at the palace whitewashing

Draymond declines option, now a free agent... Lakers time?

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Monday, 19 June 2023 17:36 (three years ago)

hes coming back

Spottie, Monday, 19 June 2023 17:40 (three years ago)

I'd be shocked if he leaves. I'm guessing he's declining so that he can agree to a longer term deal at a lower AAV to help with the tax bill while simultaneously reducing his risk of injury/performance hurting his chances next year. I'm thinking 3/$60M to line up with Steph's deal possibly? Maybe they'll push it out to a 4 year deal with a mutual option if they can extend Steph? Either way, I think Dray's value and terms will be aligned with the team.

The real concern I have is Klay - do you trade him or start negotiations on an extension that has to be below max? I really hope Klay's pride doesn't get in the way of the team moving forward. If Dray and Klay have any desire to win another ring with Steph, they have to take paycuts, or leave.

octobeard, Monday, 19 June 2023 21:58 (three years ago)

dray will get more than 60. my guess is 3/90 and possible a team option 4th year. but he already said he wants it to line up with the curry contract.

Spottie, Monday, 19 June 2023 23:43 (three years ago)

what other team is gonna give $30m/yr to a 33yo who averages 9 ppg, is ranked 143rd in PER, and is kind of an asshole?

mookieproof, Monday, 19 June 2023 23:56 (three years ago)

I could see a lot of teams wanting him at that price but would prob need to be a sign n trade situation

Spottie, Tuesday, 20 June 2023 00:53 (three years ago)

Maybe the Kuminga rumors were wishful thinking from another team?

One of the exploratory conversations that surfaced, via ESPN, was a trade-up scenario involving Kuminga. From my understanding, that was an inbound call from a team in the lottery that has registered regular interest in Kuminga dating back a year. Multiple team sources have been adamant that the Warriors aren’t shopping Kuminga around.

Cashews Everything Around Me (Leee), Wednesday, 21 June 2023 21:07 (two years ago)

it just makes sense to keep a guy with that skillset on a rookie deal.

Spottie, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 22:39 (two years ago)

dray will get more than 60. my guess is 3/90 and possible a team option 4th year. but he already said he wants it to line up with the curry contract.

If this happens they offload Poole. There's no way they can flesh out this team to compete properly paying Draymond more than they are now and keeping everyone else. It's literally $ or championships, especially with the new CBA. What is this team without Donte DiVincenzo? That's the best they can do with the new CBA next year while paying a lot more in tax $ with Poole and Dray's new hypothetical deals. That's a lot of money to likely lose in the 2nd round again.

octobeard, Thursday, 22 June 2023 00:24 (two years ago)

I think if they keep Dray they need to move Poole, not just for the money but for the vibes, too. What they do about Klay is where my interest tends. Steph strikes me as able to adjust to and accept major changes in the roster, but if the dubs choose to start a full rebuild around him I think he'll pull his foot off the accelerator and do some coasting while he scopes out his options.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Thursday, 22 June 2023 00:44 (two years ago)

I will simply not watch the 2nd team minutes this year

Chyiv Kyiv (Fetchboy), Thursday, 22 June 2023 22:29 (two years ago)

Adding insult to injury, they traded PBJ for a 2nd round pick, I assume as further salary dump? He looked really promising last year! Solid defense and great 3 point stroke. Starting to understand why Bob left.

Chyiv Kyiv (Fetchboy), Friday, 23 June 2023 16:54 (two years ago)

yeah i think it saves them a bunch of money and they think this trayce jackson davis can do more things to help immediately. basically every move now is to 1) maximize currys timeline and 2) save as much money on the fringes doing so

basically admitting that they messed up thinking they could do a two timelines thing and wasted a couple years of currys prime trying to thread the needle.

Spottie, Friday, 23 June 2023 17:10 (two years ago)

well maybe one year - 2021. 2020 Curry was injured and 2023 they mostly ran back with the same group minus swapping DiVincenzo for OPJ. If Klay, Poole, Wiggins and the young guys not named Moses don't regress in the playoffs the way they did, they go much farther potentially. They still got a ring out of it, but yeah - the front office has absolutely been humbled.

octobeard, Friday, 23 June 2023 17:18 (two years ago)

FWIW I actually like this deal. CP3, if they choose to keep him mostly on the bench, can anchor a 2nd unit really well and keep his minutes to around 20 a game. He can help slow the pace down, prevent teams from catching up nearly as quickly, and preserve his body. I would like to hope the locker room vibe improvements alone will make this trade a plus. Poole can tank command over in Washington without worrying about play time and put up 25/5 type stats (just ignore the TOV column) without worrying about committing himself to things like defense and improved ball handling/decision making. Got his bag and his ring, nicely done Jordan.
